Ex Deo, le groupe de death metal symphonique fondé par le frontman de Kataklysm, Maurizio Iacono, revient avec un nouveau EP intitulé « Year of the Four Emperors », sorti le 10 janvier 2025 sous le label Reignin Phoenix Music. Quatre ans après la sortie de l’album « The Thirteen Years of Nero », Ex Deo nous livre ce mini album portant toujours sur l’histoire de l’Empire romain. Étant un groupe totalement distinct de Kataklysm, légendaire groupe montréalais, Ex Deo nous donne une bonne leçon de death metal à sa manière.

Totalisant environ 20 minutes, Ex Deo nous propose quatre pièces portant sur chacune un empereur différent de l’Empire romain. Fusionnant l’histoire romaine et la brutalité musicale, le groupe nous livre dans leurs mots l’histoire de chacun de ces quatre empereurs. Ayant un style propre à eux, l’album est lourd et pesant tout en ayant des subtilités symphoniques en arrière-plan. Musicalement parlant, l’arrangement orchestral est un point fort et nous donne l’impression d’être à Rome prêt à combattre pour l’armée.

La qualité sonore est au rendez-vous alors que nous pouvons entendre à perfection chacun des instruments. Nous voyons qu’Ex Deo est un groupe ayant obtenu une certaine renommée dans la scène métal dans le monde. L’harmonie et les riffs sont parfaitement mixés avec la basse et le drum. Le vocal de Maurizio est encore une fois plus qu’excellent afin de nous raconter à sa façon l’histoire de chacun de ces empereurs. Les arrangements symphoniques et les choeurs ajoutent une dimension presque théâtrale à l’album.

« Year of the Four Emperors » est un excellent retour pour les montréalais après plus de quatre ans. Ex Deo maîtrise l’art de fusionner l’histoire et le métal de manière spectaculaire. Les fans de métal symphonique, tout comme les amateurs d’histoire, trouveront sans doute leur compte dans ce voyage à travers l’Empire romain.

Ex Deo sera en tournée nord-américaine en février et mars 2025 avec Septicflesh et Vltimas. Le groupe s ‘arrêtera a Montréal au Studio TD le 27 février 2025.

Ex Deo, the symphonic death metal band founded by Kataklysm’s frontman Maurizio Iacono, returns with a new EP titled « Year of the Four Emperors », released on January 10, 2025, under the Reignin Phoenix Music label. Four years after the release of the album « The Thirteen Years of Nero », Ex Deo delivers this mini-album telling different stories and tales from the Roman Empire. Ex Deo is a side project from the guys of Kataklysm, the legendary Montreal metal band. Ex Deo delivers a solid death metal lesson in their own unique style and sound.

Clocking in at around 20 minutes, Ex Deo offers four tracks, each focusing on a different emperor of the Roman Empire. Merging Roman history with musical brutality, the band tells the story of each of these four emperors in their own words. With their distinctive style, the album is heavy and intense while incorporating symphonic elements in the background. Musically, the orchestral arrangements are a highlight of the album, giving the impression of being in Rome, ready to fight with the Roman army.

The sound quality is spot on, with each instrument clearly audible. Ex Deo has earned a certain level of recognition in the global metal scene since creating this project. The harmonies and guitar riffs are perfectly mixed with the bass and drums. Maurizio’s vocals are, once again, excellent as he narrates the story of each emperor in his own way. The symphonic arrangements and choirs add an almost theatrical dimension to the album.

« Year of the Four Emperors », marks a strong return for the Montreal-based band after more than four years. Ex Deo masters the art of blending history and metal in a spectacular way. Fans of symphonic metal, as well as history enthusiasts, will undoubtedly find enjoyment in this journey through the Roman Empire.

Ex Deo will be touring North America in February and March 2025 with Septicflesh and Vltimas. The band will make a stop in Montreal at Studio TD on February 27, 2025.
