Voici le compte rendu de Phil Grondin et les photos prises par Martin Desbois lors du spectacle de Mayhem présenté par Extensive Enterprise et Heavy MTL au Théâtre Beanfield de Montréal le 25 mars 2025 et qui mettait également à l’affiche Mortiis, Imperial Triumphant et New Skeletal Faces.

Retour sur le spectacle
La tournée « Decibel Magazine Tour » s’arrêta au Théâtre Beanfield de Montréal alors que la formation Mayhem venait célébrer son 40e anniversaire de formation avec un set spécial afin de célébrer l’événement. Originalement prévu pour 2024, mais annulé suite à des problèmes de santé d’un membre du groupe, c’est ce soir qu’aura enfin lieu le spectacle. Les formations Mortiis, Imperial Triumphant et New Skeletal Faces vont s’assurer de réchauffer la foule avant l’arrivée des légendes du black metal norvégien.
New Skeletal Faces
Les californiens de New Skeletal Faces sont venus réchauffer la place avec un style que je pourrais dire assez unique. Alors que l’on dirait qu’ils sont sortis directement des années 80 avec la coupe de cheveux nous rappelant Blackie Lawless de W.A.S.P. et vêtus avec un manteau de cuir, les gars nous ont proposé un contenu alternant le rock and roll avec une touche de black/death à la Venom. En gros, c’est comme si Motley Crue et Venom avaient eu un bébé et il s’appelle New Skeletal Faces. Ne connaissant aucunement ce groupe, je vais avouer que j’ai été surpris de leur son unique. Parfois une voix plus aiguë par le chanteur et parfois plus grave, ils nous ont servi une bonne dose de rock and roll avec des riffs accrocheurs. Actif depuis 2017, ce trio est un bon petit opener pour une soirée mélangeant plusieurs styles musicaux !
Imperial Triumphant
Imperial Triumphant sont les prochains à s’exécuter sur scène. Avec un style propre à eux alors qu’ils présentent des masques dorés et vêtus de longue toge noire, le trio de New-York vient nous présente sa musique que je pourrais qualifier d’avant-garde, technique, black, death metal ? Bref, faites-vous votre propre opinion, mais… c’est bon ! Alors qu’une vidéo est présentée en arrière-scène, nous avons droit à une présentation théâtre d’un excellent groupe donc j’en suis à ma troisième expérience. Cette fois fut facilement la meilleure. Ayant sorti un album il y a peine une semaine, surnommé « Goldstar », Imperial Triumphant a su miser sur le côté artistique afin de montrer leur plein potentiel. Le chanteur, Zachary Ezrin, n’hésite pas à nous parler entre les pièces d’une façon robotique et futuristique alors que sa voix est modifiée. Un arrêt dans la province en tant que tête d’affiche est plus que nécessaire bientôt car un grand nombre de spectacteurs abordaient un t-shirt du groupe.
Mortiis
Le norvégien Mortiis est le suivant à venir présenter son dungeon synth et musique industrielle/techno. Ancien membre du légendaire groupe Emperor, il a quitté ce dernier alors qu’il n’avait plus d’intérêt pour le black metal et préférait se concentrer sur ce style musical. Honnêtement, c’est le seul élément que je pourrais trouver pour expliquer pourquoi il est sur la tournée. Accompagné d’un drummer à sa gauche, Mortiis est venu nous jouer des pièces de sa vaste discographie qui s’étend sur plus de 30 ans. Tout comme Imperial Triumphant, des projections à thématique médiévale et moyen-âge sont en arrière-plan afin d’immerger la foule dans l’atmosphère de la pièce. Mortiis semble agir en tant que « dj » alors qu’il est simplement muni d’un synthétiseur pour jouer les pièces et se met à chanter à l’occasion, voir très peu. Sans rien enlever au talent de Mortiis, j’aurais échangé Imperial Triumphant et Mortiis sur le line-up de place. 45 minutes me semblaient vraiment long alors que plusieurs personnes semblaient se demander ce qu’ils étaient en train de regarder. Le talent est là mais l’engouement ne semblait pas être tout à fait présent dans la foule. Bref, c’est bon, mais unique. Les goûts sont dans la nature comme le dit si bien le dicton !
Mayhem
Mayhem est le dernier groupe à entrer sur scène. Tout comme les groupes précédents, une rétrospective en vidéo de la carrière du groupe est diffusée en arrière-plan avec plusieurs moments forts du groupe tels que différentes photos promos selon les époques présentées, des hommages au défunt chanteur Dead et au guitariste Euronymous, etc. Durant deux heures, nous avons droit au meilleur de Mayhem en partant du plus récent album, « Daemon », jusqu’au premier EP « Deathcrush » de 1984. Mayhem est considéré comme l’un des groupes les plus influents du black metal norvégien et nous en avons la démonstration devant nous. Malgré leur âge avancé, entre 50 et 60 ans, les gars ne sont aucunement prêts d’annoncer leur retraite et ne manquent pas d’énergie.
Au point de vue cinématique et mise en scène, on ne peut demander mieux. L’hommage rendu aux défunts membres a été un de mes points forts lors de la présentation des époques « De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas » et « Deathcrush ». La foule a complètement changé d’humeur lorsque les mythiques pièces « Freezing Moon » et « Deathcrush » ont commencé. Nous avons même eu le droit d’entendre une version avec la voix de Dead sur la pièce « Funeral Fog » avec seulement les membres en train de jouer leur instrument.
Fidèle à son habitude, le chanteur Attila Csihar a profité pour utiliser des accessoires tels une corde de pendue, une croix inversée en os, etc. L’ambiance était survoltée ! Pendant plus de 40 ans, ces gars ont eu une énorme influence sur la scène black metal et leur notoriété est grandement méritée. Mayhem est un tank, une vraie machine de guerre. Ceci ne fait pas différence avec leur prestation de ce soir qui est facilement la meilleure que j’ai assistée, groupe que j’ai pu voir 5 fois auparavant.
C’est sous la pièce « Pure Fucking Armageddon » que la troupe d’Attila salue une dernière fois la foule montréalaise qui a été conquise dès la première note jouée.

The « Decibel Magazine Tour » made a stop at the Beanfield Theatre in Montreal as the band Mayhem came to celebrate their 40th anniversary with a special set to mark the occasion. Originally scheduled for 2024 but canceled due to health issues of one of the band members, the show is finally happening tonight. The bands Mortiis, Imperial Triumphant, and New Skeletal Faces will warm up the crowd before the arrival of the Norwegian black metal legends.
New Skeletal Faces
The Californians New Skeletal Faces kicked things off with a style that I would describe as quite unique. While they looked like they had stepped straight out of the ’80s, with hairstyles reminiscent of Blackie Lawless from W.A.S.P. and dressed in leather jackets, they offered a sound alternating between rock and roll with a touch of black/death metal à la Venom. In short, it’s like if Motley Crue and Venom had a baby, and it’s called New Skeletal Faces. Not knowing the band at all, I have to admit I was surprised by their unique sound. Sometimes the singer’s voice was higher-pitched, sometimes lower, and they served up a solid dose of rock and roll with catchy riffs. Active since 2017, this trio makes a great opener for an evening blending multiple musical styles!
Imperial Triumphant
Imperial Triumphant was next to perform. With their unique style, presenting golden masks and dressed in long black robes, this New York trio offered us their music, which I would describe as avant-garde, technical, black, death metal? Anyway, make up your own mind on what genre it is, but… it’s good! While a video played on the background screen, we were treated to a theatrical performance by an excellent band, and this was my third time seeing them. This time was easily the best. Having released an album just a week ago called « Goldstar », Imperial Triumphant relied on their artistic side to showcase their full potential. The singer, Zachary Ezrin, doesn’t hesitate to speak between songs in a robotic and futuristic manner, with his voice modified. A headliner stop in the province is more than necessary soon, as many spectators were wearing the band’s t-shirt.
Mortiis
Next up is the Norwegian Mortiis, presenting his dungeon synth and industrial/techno music. Former member of the legendary band Emperor, he left the band when he lost interest in black metal and preferred to focus on this musical style. Honestly, this is the only reason I can find to explain why he’s on this tour. Accompanied by a drummer to his left, Mortiis came to play tracks from his vast discography that spans over 30 years. Just like Imperial Triumphant, medieval and medieval-themed projections were shown in the background to immerse the crowd in the atmosphere of the piece. Mortiis seems to act as a « DJ » as he’s simply equipped with a synthesizer to play the pieces and occasionally sings, though very little. Without taking away from Mortiis’ talent, I would have swapped Imperial Triumphant and Mortiis’ spots on the lineup. Forty-five minutes felt really long as many people seemed to wonder what they were watching and listening. The talent is there, but the excitement didn’t seem to be fully present in the crowd. In short, it’s good, but unique. As the saying goes, tastes differ!
Mayhem
Mayhem is the last band to take the stage. Just like the previous bands, a video retrospective of the band’s career is shown in the background, featuring several highlights such as various promotional photos from different eras, tributes to the late singer Dead and guitarist Euronymous, and more. For two hours, we get the best of Mayhem, starting with their most recent album, « Daemon », all the way back to their first EP, « Deathcrush » from 1984. Mayhem is considered one of the most influential bands in Norwegian black metal history, and we witnessed it why tonight. Despite their age, between 50 and 60, the guys are in no way ready to announce their retirement and are still full of energy.
From a cinematic and staging perspective, it couldn’t have been better. The tribute to the deceased members was one of the highlights for me during the presentation of the « De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas » and « Deathcrush » eras. The crowd completely changed its mood when the legendary tracks « Freezing Moon » and « Deathcrush » started. We were even treated to a version of « Funeral Fog » with Dead’s vocals playing in the backgorund, with only the members playing their instruments.
True to himself, singer Attila Csihar made use of props like a hanging noose and an inverted bone cross, etc. The atmosphere was electric! For over 40 years, these guys have had a massive influence on the black metal scene, and their fame is well deserved. Mayhem is a tank, a true war machine. This was no different from their performance tonight, which was easily the best I’ve witnessed, even though I’ve seen the band five times before.
It was with the track « Pure Fucking Armageddon » that Attila’s band said their final goodbye to the Montreal crowd.
