Voici le compte rendu de Phil Grondin et les photos prises par Vicky Fillion lors du spectacle de Kerry King présenté par Heavy MTL, Greenland et Extensive Enterprise à L’Olympia de Montréal le 2 février 2025 et qui mettait également à l’affiche Municipal Waste et Alien Weaponry.

Retour sur le spectacle
Un dimanche soir chargé pour les amateurs de thrash moderne et old school alors que les formations Kerry King et Municipal Waste rendaient visite aux métalleux du Québec à l’Olympia de Montréal. La formation néo-zélandaise Alien Weaponry allait assurer la première partie. Présenté par Heavy MTL, Extensive Enterprise et Greenland, le spectacle affichait presque complet alors que quelques billets étaient encore disponibles à la porte.
Arrivé plus d’une heure avant le début du show, je me dirige tranquillement vers la table de merch des groupes afin d’y jeter un coup d’œil. 65 $ pour un t-shirt ?! Autant pour Kerry King que Municipal Waste ? Ouf, on repassera de ce côté… une bière à 12 $ plus le tip sera plus raisonnable (Ouais ouais…)
Alien Weaponry
Alien Weaponry ouvre le bal à 19h tapant. Présentant un style de metal assez particulier, le trio de Waipu, une petite île de Nouvelle-Zélande, utilise le chant Maori dans ses chansons. Chacun des membres a la chance de chanter sa partie dans les chansons alors qu’un micro est placé au drum, à la guitare et à la bass. La première pièce « Raupatu » démontre le talent que les gars possèdent alors qu’ils ont la chance de nous séduire pendant plus de 30 minutes. Une bonne première impression pour le groupe qui a sûrement un sacré décalage horaire dans le corps. Ayant seulement la possibilité de jouer 5 pièces, le trio a su piquer la curiosité de plusieurs personnes alors que l’Olympia commence à se remplir de plus en plus.
Municipal Waste
Municipal Waste est le prochain groupe à entrer sur scène. Ce groupe qui œuvre dans un thrash metal moderne depuis 2001 est une force dans la scène thrash. Ayant un visuel plus que dynamique sur scène alors que des bidons de produits nucléaires radioactifs jettent de la boucane (beau moyen pour mettre les smoke machines), Municipal Waste ouvre le bal avec le classique « Garbage Stomp ».
Les classiques n’ont pas arrêté de la soirée alors « Wave of Death », « The Art of Partying » et « Born to Party » ne sont que quelques noms qui me viennent en tête. En tout, c’est un groupe plus qu’en forme qui nous a servi une vraie raclée pendant plus d’une heure. Le chanteur, Tony Foresta, ne se gêne pas pour s’adresser à la foule avec humour et demande à plusieurs moments de former deux circle pits sur le parterre. En gros, le seul mot que je peux qualifier pour ce groupe est PARTY! L’énergie est débordante partout dans la salle. Encore une fois, les gars de Richmond dans l’état de Virginie ont su faire lever le party, des body surfing, de la bière qui revole de partout et j’en passe.

Kerry King
Le légendaire Kerry King (ancien guitariste de Slayer) est le dernier groupe à se produire sur la scène de l’Olympia. Accompagné de musiciens de haute renommée tels que : Mark Osegueda du groupe Death Angel au vocal, Paul Bostaph aux drums (qui est également dans Slayer suite à la dernière réunion), etc. Kerry King nous propose un thrash old school qui pourrait être la suite logique de Slayer, presque un Slayer 2.0.
La setlist de la soirée est assez simple : le nouvel album intitulé « From Hell I Rise » joué en intégrale ainsi que des covers de Slayer et d’Iron Maiden ! Mark Osegueda n’hésite pas de célébrer Paul Di’Anno, premier chanteur d’Iron Maiden décédé l’an passé. En plus, c’était le 44ème anniversaire de l’album « Killers » ! Ils en ont profité pour jouer les pièces « Purgatory » et « Killers ». Très beau signe de respect pour la légende Di’Anno !
L’ambiance s’est soudainement calmée dès que Kerry King est arrivé sur scène. Est-ce que tout le monde s’est donné à fond pour Municipal Waste et voulait être plus tranquille ? Plus que le set avançait, plus l’Olympia commençait à se vider. Sans rien enlever à Kerry King, le clash entre les deux groupes était énorme. Party absolu pour Municipal Waste et thrash old school par la suite. Rien de moins, la foule a totalement perdu la tête dès les premières notes du grand classique de Slayer « Raining Blood ».
Comme premier spectacle de l’année auquel j’ai eu la chance d’assister, je peux dire que c’est une réussite sur toute la ligne. Municipal Waste a volé la soirée de mon côté. À bientôt !

It was a busy Sunday night for fans of modern and old-school thrash metal as Kerry King and Municipal Waste were in town at Montreal’s Olympia. New Zealand band Alien Weaponry was handling the opening act. Presented by Extensive Enterprise and Heavy MTL, the show was nearly sold out, with only a few tickets still available at the door.
Arriving over an hour before the show started, I made my way to the bands’ merch table to take a look. $65 for a t-shirt?! Both for Kerry King and Municipal Waste? Oof, we’ll pass on that… a $12 beer plus tip seems like a more reasonable choice (Yeah, right…)
Alien Weaponry
Alien Weaponry kicks off the evening right at 7:00 PM. With a unique style of metal, the trio from Waipu, a small island in New Zealand, incorporates Maori vocals into their songs. Each member gets a chance to sing their part, with microphones set up at the drums, guitar, and bass. The first track, « Raupatu, » showcases the talent these guys possess with a small set of 30 minutes. A solid first impression for the band, who must be battling with some serious jet lag. Alien Weaponry had the opportunity to perform only five songs, the trio was able to spark the curiosity of many, as the Olympia gradually began to fill up more and more.
Municipal Waste
Municipal Waste is the next band to go on stage. Considered has a powerhouse in the thrash scene, Municipal Waste is active since 2001 and has a modern thrash metal sound. With a highly dynamic stage presence, as barrels of nuclear products emit smoke (a great way to use smoke machines), Municipal Waste kicks off the show with the classic « Garbage Stomp. »
The classics kept coming throughout the evening, with songs like « Wave of Death, » « The Art of Partying, » and « Born to Party » being just a few that come to mind. The guys were just on fire and were kicking everyone’s ass for over an hour. The singer, Tony Foresta, doesn’t hesitate to interact with the crowd humorously and repeatedly asks for two circle pits to form in the crowd. Basically, the only word I can use to describe this band is PARTY! The energy is overflowing throughout the venue. Once again, the guys from Richmond, Virginia knew how to get the party going, with body surfing, beer flying everywhere, and much more. This band never dissapoint.

Kerry King
The legendary Kerry King (former guitarist of Slayer) is the last band to perform on the Olympia stage. Accompanied by highly renowned musicians such as Mark Osegueda from Death Angel on vocals, Paul Bostaph on drums (who is also in Slayer following their latest reunion), etc., Kerry King delivers old-school thrash metal that could easily be seen as the logical continuation of Slayer, almost like Slayer 2.0.
The setlist for the evening is quite simple: the new album titled « From Hell I Rise » played in its entirety, along with covers of Slayer and Iron Maiden! Mark Osegueda doesn’t hesitate to celebrate Paul Di’Anno, the original singer of Iron Maiden who passed away last year. Additionally, it was the 44th anniversary of the « Killers » album! They took the opportunity to perform « Purgatory » and « Killers » from that album. A beautiful sign of respect for the legendary Di’Anno!
The atmosphere suddenly slowed as soon as Kerry King took the stage. It almost looks like everyone just gave all their energy during Municipal Waste. As the set went on, the Olympia started to look a bit more empty after every song. Without taking anything away from Kerry King, the contrast between the two bands was huge. An absolute party for Municipal Waste, followed by old-school thrash that looks a bit more serious. Needless to say, the crowd completely lost their minds as soon as the first notes of Slayer’s classic « Raining Blood » started.
As the first show of the year I had the chance to attend, I can say it was a success all around. Municipal Waste stole the show for me. See you soon!
