Formé en 2004, le groupe français IN OTHER CLIMES a déjà sous sa ceinture 2 EP, 2 Split et 2 albums complet. «Leftover» est donc le 3ème album complet qui poursuit dans la même veine hardcore.
«Dreams» débute l’album sur un feedback d’ampli pendant qu’on entend un sampling de la fameuse phrase «I had a dream» puis la guitare enchaîne et ça décolle sur un train d’enfer. Pas de niaisage. On sent tout de suite la vibe NYHC. Le beat est parfaitement dans le ton, le son des instruments ne peut tromper et Michael a la voix parfaite pour nous crier sa frustration. Le total package quoi. Et je n’aurais jamais deviné qu’ils viennent de France.
Je ne m’éterniserai pas à vous expliquer de long en large pourquoi cet album vous rentre dedans comme un train et qu’une fois remis du choc initial, vous vous rendez compte que non seulement vous avez survécu, mais qu’en fait vous êtes maintenant assis dans le siège avant dudit train qui n’est plus sur des rails au sol mais déboule en malade dans les montagnes russes conventionnelles les plus trippantes que vous aimeriez essayées. Le mieux avec ce genre de hardcore est de l’expérimenter par soi-même après s’être installé comme il faut juste pour être sûr qu’on est prêt pour la «ride». On est sûr de rester sur les rails car leur musique ne débordera pas dans des excès de modernité mais le trajet aura de multiples courbes comme les choeurs mélodiques dans «City of Glass», la passe de piano qui termine «Brainwashed», le côté rock’n’roll de «Have you Ever», l’intro de «Dead Man’s Fingers» et quelques samplings d’intro/outro tout en créant cet effet d’essoufflement provoqué par la vitesse et l’urgence. Et si vous êtes dans votre voiture, je suggère fortement de mettre le «cruise control» avant de presser «PLAY».
Pour ceux qui me trouvent vague dans cette présentation, imaginez la furie et le côté punk de SICK OF IT ALL auxquels on ajouterait mettons le côté thrash/crust de ALL OUT WAR, deux groupes de vétérans qui continuent (avec d’autres bien sûr) à porter le drapeau du hardcore new-yorkais comme ça se fait depuis son apparition dans les années 80, parfois agrémenté du côté bouncing groove punché du hardcore à la HATEBREED. Et tout ça, je vous le dis seulement parce que des fois ça prend une référence ou deux pour avoir le goût de découvrir un groupe mais à ce que j’ai entendu sur «Leftover», je crois qu’à l’avenir ils pourraient devenir un nom que vous citerez en référence avec les autres inévitables du genre quand vous voudrez expliquer comment ça sonne du hardcore.
Je termine en disant qu’il n’y a rien de mieux que de l’expérimenter par soi-même parce que même quand c’est notre meilleur chum qui nous le conte, ça ne peut pas être pareil même si on sent quand même le genre de trip qu’il nous explique.

«Dreams» starts up the album with an amp feedback noise while we hear a sampling of the famous words «I had a dream» that brings forth the guitar and it takes off out of the blocks like hell. No fooling around here. Right off the start I felt the NYHC vibe. The beat is perfectly in synch, the sound of the instruments can’t be more in tune and Michael has the perfect voice to cry out his frustration. They’ve got the total package. I’d never have known they come from France,
I won’t get into long and in-depth analysis to explain why this album hits you like a train and once you’ve recovered from the initial shock, you realize that you’ve not only survived the collision but in fact you’re now sitting in the front seat of the said train which is no longer on the ground but tumbles down into the boldest yet conventional roller coaster you’d like to test. Naturally the best with this kind of hardcore is to experience it for yourself after making sure you’re well saddled just to be sure that you’re ready for the ride. Don’t worry you’re sure to stay on track because their music is not overflowed in excess of modernity but the ride will have multiple curves like this melodic chorus in «City of Glass», the atmospheric piano ending for «Brainwashed», the rock’n’roll drive of «Have you ever?», the intro of «Dead Man’s Fingers», some samplings to start/end songs but still and thankfully, the speed and urgency create that shortness of breath effect so praised by die-hard riders of monster ride in attraction parks… And if you’re in your car, I strongly suggest putting on the cruise control before pressing « PLAY ».
For those who find me vague in this presentation, imagine the fury and punk side of SICK OF IT ALL to which I’d add the thrash/crust of ALL OUT WAR, both groups still carrying after all those years (with other bands of course) the flag of NYHC as it’s done since it emerged in the 80s, mixed with sparse shots of the bouncing punchy groove side of the hardcore «à la» HATEBREED. And all that, I only say it because sometimes it takes a reference or two to be interested to discover a band but for what I’ve heard on «Leftover», I believe that in the future they could become a name you’d come up with along your usual references when you want to explain how hardcore metal sounds like.
I’ll finish by saying that there is nothing better than to experience it for yourself because even when it’s our best friend who tells us about his experience, it can’t be the same but still I hope you feel what I mean if that’s your kind of hardcore ride.
