Voici le compte rendu de Phil Grondin et les photos prises par Vicky Fillion lors du spectacle de Apocalyptica présenté par Heavy MTL, Evenko et Live Nation Concerts au MTelus de Montréal le 12 février 2025 et qui mettait également à l’affiche Nita Strauss.

Retour sur le spectacle
Le calme avant la tempête ! C’est les premiers mots qui me viennent à l’esprit pour décrire le spectacle d’Apocalyptica présenté au MTelus alors qu’une énorme tempête de neige est prévue le lendemain. Présenté par Heavy MTL, les finlandais sont venus présenter leur spectacle en hommage à la légendaire formation Metallica qui n’a nul besoin de présentation. Intitulée « Apocalyptica Plays Metallica Vol.2 Tour », cette tournée se voyait être l’opportunité parfaite d’y faire la promotion de leur dernier album sorti en 2024 portant également le même nom que la tournée. Le groupe de la guitariste Nita Strauss assurait la première partie de la soirée.
Nita Strauss
Nita Strauss vient endiabler la foule avec son groupe alors qu’elle vient nous démontrer son talent de guitariste. Ayant eu la chance de la voir en tournée avec Alice Cooper, elle n’hésite pas d’aller avec la formule « full band » avec un autre guitariste, drummeur et claviériste. Majoritairement instrumental, elle a su nous démontrer son talent à la guitare avec des pièces tirées de son album « The Call of the Void », paru en 2023. Tout au long de sa performance de 45 minutes, elle n’a pas hésité d’échanger avec la foule quelques mots en français. Son énergie était contagieuse et elle semblait vraiment apprécier le fait de jouer devant la foule montréalaise. Lors des 4 dernières chansons, nous avons eu la possibilité d’avoir la chanteuse Kasey Karlsen du groupe Deadlands. Malgré un souci de micro sur la pièce « Victorious », le tout a été ajusté et nous avons eu la chance de voir le talent de cette artiste encore inconnue à ce jour pour moi mais qui dégage une belle énergie. C’est sous la chansons « The Wolf You Feed » que le groupe conclut leur prestation afin de laisser place à Apocalyptica.
Apocalyptica
Apocalyptica entre sur scène accompagné de leurs violoncelles et d’un drummeur invité. Réputé pour utiliser des violoncelles afin d’y jouer un metal classique, le groupe évolue dans des compositions originales et des reprises. Pour cette tournée, l’oeuvre de Metallica est jouée. Comme un vrai spectacle de Metallica, « The Ectasy of Gold » est joué. Cette pièce, intro iconique de Metallica, est jouée au début de chaque spectacle.
C’est avec « Ride the Lightning » que la prestation commence. Woah ! Okay. C’est du sérieux là. Tout au long du spectacle d’environ 1 heure et demi, Apocalyptica joue des pièces majoritairement des 5 premiers albums, de Kill ‘Em All jusqu’au Black Album à l’exception de St. Anger de l’album controversé portant le même nom. Les violoncellistes Eicca Toppinen et Perttu Kivilaakso ont eu un énorme plaisir d’interagir avec la foule demandant à quelques moments de chanter les pièces jouées. « Enter Sandman » et « Nothing Else Matters » ont été les pièces ayant été chanté le plus fort à la surprise d’absolument personne (sarcasme). Ce sont quand même deux des plus grands succès de Metallica ! Jouer du Metallica avec un violoncelle qui donne des allures de guitare électrique, il faut le faire ! Les gars ont énormément de talents !
Il était intéressant de remarquer que la foule était composée de personnes de différentes tranches d’âge. Apocalyptica a su nous plonger dans une ambiance de spectacle classique avec une touche metal. Souhaitons un retour très bientôt des Finlandais !

The calm before the storm! These are the first words that come to mind to describe the Apocalyptica show at the MTelus, especially with a massive snowstorm forecasted for the next day. Presented by Heavy MTL, the Finnish band came to perform a tribute show to the legendary Metallica, a band that needs no introduction. Titled « Apocalyptica Plays Metallica Vol.2 Tour, » this tour was the perfect opportunity to promote their latest album, released in 2024, which also carries the same name as the tour. Nita Strauss’s band was the opening act for the evening.
Nita Strauss
Nita Strauss starts the night with her band as she showcases her guitar skills. She is ready to set everything on fire ! I had the chance to see her on tour with Alice Cooper and she doesn’t hesitate to go with the ‘full band’ formula, featuring another guitarist, drummer, and keyboardist. Mostly instrumental, she demonstrated her guitar skills with songs from her 2023 album called « The Call of the Void ». Throughout her 45-minute performance, she didn’t hesitate to exchange a few words in French with the crowd. Her energy was contagious, and she seemed to truly enjoy playing in front of the Montreal audience. During the last 4 songs, we had the opportunity to see a guest singer, Kasey Karlsen, from the band Deadlands. Despite a microphone issue during the song « Victorious », it was quickly fixed, and we got to see the talent of this artist, who was unknown to me until now. She really has a nice energy and seems to love singing. The band concluded their set with the song « The Wolf You Feed ». Apocalyptica is next !
Apocalyptica
Apocalyptica takes the stage accompanied by their cellos and a guest drummer. Known for using cellos to play classical metal, the band performs both original compositions and covers. For this tour, they are playing the works of Metallica. Like a true Metallica show, « The Ecstasy of Gold » is played to open the show. This iconic Metallica intro is used at the beginning of every concert.
The performance kicks off with « Ride the Lightning » Whoa! Okay. This is getting serious. Throughout the roughly the whole show, Apocalyptica plays mainly tracks from their first five albums, from « Kill ‘Em All » to the « Black Album », except for « St. Anger » from the controversial album of the same name. Cellists Eicca Toppinen and Perttu Kivilaakso had a blast interacting with the crowd, occasionally asking them to sing along to the songs. « Enter Sandman » and « Nothing Else Matters » were the songs that got the loudest crowd sing-alongs, to the surprise of some people (a bit sarcastic there). After all, these are two of Metallica’s biggest hits! Playing Metallica with a cello that sounds like an electric guitar—now that’s something! The guys have immense talent and it shows!
It was interesting to notice that the crowd was made up of people from different age. Apocalyptica managed to create a classical concert atmosphere with a metal twist. We hope to see the Finns back in town very soon!
