Voici le compte rendu de Phil Grondin et les photos prises par Corinne Ainscow lors du spectacle de Opeth présenté par Heavy MTL, Extensive Enterprise, Greenland Productions et Evenko à L’Olympia de Montréal le 15 octobre 2024 et qui mettait également à l’affiche Tribulation.
C’est un mardi soir d’octobre bien tranquille dans la ville de Montréal… FAUX ! C’est un mardi soir bien occupé avec la visite des Suédois d’Opeth et Tribulation qui sont venus envahir l’Olympia de Montréal dans le cadre de la tournée « The Last Will and Testament » qui parcourt présentement l’Amérique du Nord. Présenté par Heavy MTL et Greenland Productions, le spectacle de ce soir affiche complet et ce depuis peu de temps après que la tournée soit annoncée. Signe que les concerts metal à Montréal sont bien en vie et en santé, presque tous les spectacles affichent complet maintenant !
Tribulation
Ouvrant la soirée avec un gothic metal digne des années 80, la troupe de Tribulation entre sur scène aux alentours de 19h30. Ayant vu ce groupe dans le passé à leur époque plus death metal avec leur premier album « The Horror », je vais avouer que j’ai littéralement pogné, comme on dit en bon québécois, « pogné un deux minutes ». Ayant prit une tournure plus gothic metal, Tribulation m’a totalement surpris par leur look comparable au légendaire groupe « The Cure ». Les pièces suggérées sont tirées en majeure partie de leur nouveau son. Sans enlever le talent du groupe et la qualité sonore qui était soi-disant excellente, j’aurais bien aimé entendre une pièce de leur album « The Horror ». Leur son gothic metal m’a paru parfois long et sans saveur. Peut-être que je garde trop en souvenir leur première période plus lourde et que j’avais trop d’attentes face à Tribulation.
Mine de rien, les Suédois ont très bien paru avec les pièces « Hungry Waters » et « Saturn Coming Down » qui ont été mes coups de cœurs de leur prestation. La foule, quoique statique par moment, a su échanger quelques petits headbangs par-ci par-là sur le parterre. Plusieurs personnes abordaient des gilets à l’effigie du groupe prouvant que plusieurs spectateurs se sont déplacés afin de voir leur favori pendant plus de 45 minutes. Passons maintenant avec la tête d’affiche, Opeth !
Opeth
La bande de Mikael Åkerfeldt arrive sous les applaudissements et les cris de la foule prêt à recevoir leur dose de metal progressif à saveur death metal. Virtuose et génie musical dans l’âme, Mikael nous présente le premier extrait du prochain album à paraître le 22 novembre 2024, soit la pièce « §1 », qui peut se traduire par « Paragraphe 1 ». Avec une toile en arrière-plan qui projette des vidéos et effets spéciaux reliés à chaque pièce jouée, Opeth enchaîne avec les classiques « The Leper Affinity » et « The Grand Conjuration ». À partir de ce moment, la foule commence à se dégêner et le moshpit embarque officiellement sur le parterre ainsi que les body surfings qui se répètent tout au long de la soirée.
Déjà trois pièces se sont écoulées et nous voyons déjà l’enthousiasme de Mikael et les musiciens sur scène. Fidèle à son habitude, il n’hésite pas à interagir de manière humoristique et parfois sarcastique avec la foule entre chaque pièce afin de laisser un petit temps de repos. À la surprise de plusieurs, la pièce « Demon of the Fall » est la prochaine à être jouée. Depuis le début de la tournée, le groupe joue « The Devil’s Orchard », pièce tirée du premier album où Opeth délaisse le côté death metal pour s’orienter plus vers un son progressif des années 70. Deux pièces de cette époque seront jouées au courant de la soirée soient « Eternal Rains Will Come » et « Sorceress ». Le choix d’incorporer ces deux pièces est un atout dans ce spectacle laissant la possibilité aux musiciens de démontrer leur grand talent au niveau de leur son plus prog rock. La foule semblait également apprécier l’incorporation de ces deux morceaux.
Viens le moment plus tranquille avec la pièce « In My Time of Need » de l’album Damnation. Mikael nous avoue même qu’il a écouté la pièce Damnation du groupe Morbid Angel et a alors décidé d’appeler l’album à partir de ce moment ! Quelle belle anecdote! Mikael nous demande alors de chanter quelques passages de la chanson ce que la foule chante à cœur joie! Quel beau moment, facilement mon moment préféré de la soirée ! Entendre cette pièce était un moment touchant !
Pendant plus de deux heures, nous avons eu droit à une setlist variée d’Opeth en alternant les différents classiques de toutes les époques. S’étirant sur plus de 30 ans, la longue carrière d’Opeth regorge de classiques en quantité industrielle. Ce groupe est d’une justesse inégalée lors d’une prestation live et tous les musiciens ont rendu justice à la notoriété du nom Opeth. La qualité sonore, le charisme de Mikael, l’ambiance de la foule, les chansons, tout était parfait.
Ce spectacle sera possiblement dans mon top 3 de la fin d’année. Quelle belle soirée !

It’s a quiet Tuesday night in October in the city of Montreal… WRONG! It’s a busy Tuesday night with the visit of the Swedes from Opeth and Tribulation who came to invade the Olympia in Montreal as part of the « The Last Will and Testament » tour that is currently traveling across North America. Presented by Heavy MTL and Greenland Productions, tonight’s show is sold out and has been since shortly after the tour was announced. A sign that metal concerts in Montreal are alive and well, almost all the shows are sold out now!
Tribulation
Opening the evening with a gothic metal worthy of the 80s, the Tribulation troupe enters the stage around 7:30 p.m. Having seen this band in the past in their more death metal era with their first album « The Horror », I will admit that I literally got, as they say in good Quebecois, « got a two-minute break ». Having taken a more gothic metal turn, Tribulation totally surprised me with their look comparable to the legendary band « The Cure ». The suggested pieces are mostly taken from their new sound. Without taking away the talent of the band and the sound quality which was supposedly excellent, I would have liked to hear a piece from their album « The Horror ». Their gothic metal sound sometimes seemed long and bland to me. Maybe I remember their first heavier period too much and I had too many expectations for Tribulation.
Without realizing it, the Swedes looked very good with the pieces « Hungry Waters » and « Saturn Coming Down » which were my favorites of their performance. The crowd, although static at times, knew how to exchange a few little headbangs here and there on the floor. Several people were wearing vests with the band’s image proving that several spectators moved to see their favorite for more than 45 minutes. Now let’s move on to the headliner, Opeth!
Opeth
Mikael Åkerfeldt’s band arrives to the applause and screams of the crowd ready to receive their dose of progressive metal with a death metal flavor. A virtuoso and musical genius at heart, Mikael presents us with the first excerpt from the next album to be released on November 22, 2024, the piece « §1 », which can be translated as « Paragraph 1 ». With a canvas in the background that projects videos and special effects related to each piece played, Opeth continues with the classics « The Leper Affinity » and « The Grand Conjuration ». From this moment on, the crowd begins to loosen up and the moshpit officially embarks on the floor as well as the body surfings that are repeated throughout the evening.
Already three pieces have passed and we can already see the enthusiasm of Mikael and the musicians on stage. True to form, he does not hesitate to interact in a humorous and sometimes sarcastic way with the crowd between each piece in order to allow a little rest time. To the surprise of many, the piece « Demon of the Fall » is the next to be played. Since the beginning of the tour, the band has been playing « The Devil’s Orchard », a piece from the first album where Opeth abandons the death metal side to move more towards a progressive sound of the 70s. Two pieces from this era will be played during the evening: « Eternal Rains Will Come » and « Sorceress ». The choice to incorporate these two pieces is an asset in this show, giving the musicians the opportunity to demonstrate their great talent in terms of their more prog rock sound. The crowd also seemed to appreciate the incorporation of these two pieces.
The quieter moment comes with the piece « In My Time of Need » from the album Damnation. Mikael even admits that he listened to the song Damnation by the band Morbid Angel and decided to call the album from that moment! What a great anecdote! Mikael then asks us to sing a few passages of the song which the crowd sings with joy! What a beautiful moment, easily my favorite moment of the evening! Hearing this piece was a touching moment!
For more than two hours, we were treated to a varied setlist by Opeth alternating between different classics from all eras. Spanning over 30 years, Opeth’s long career is full of classics in industrial quantities. This group is of unequaled accuracy during a live performance and all the musicians did justice to the notoriety of the Opeth name. The sound quality, Mikael’s charisma, the atmosphere of the crowd, the songs, everything was perfect.
This show will possibly be in my top 3 of the end of the year. What a great evening!
