Voici le compte rendu de Jean-Daniel Poirier et les photos prises par Vicky Fillion lors du spectacle de The Black Dahlia Murder présenté par Extensive Enterprise au MTelus de Montreal le 22 avril 2023 et qui mettait également à l’affiche Despised Icon, Terror, Frozen Soul, Fuming Mouth et Phobophilic.

Phobophilic
C’est à 6 heures tapant que le groupe arrive sur scène.
Je ne connais pas le groupe que je qualifierais de death metal old school qui nous provient tout droit du Dakota du nord. Ce qui a le plus retenu mon attention, c’est le vocal particulièrement grave qui me rappelle les bonnes années de Chris Barns (ex. Cannibal Corpse/ Six Feet Under). Ils ont des riffs plutôt lents et lourds qui donnent réellement le goût d’headbanger. Le tout est parfois parsemé de riffs plus rapides et énergiques. À certains moments, ils ont des de belles polyrythmies qui sortent l’auditeur du confort du 4/4.
Malheureusement, je n’ai pas trouvé qu’ils avaient énormément de prestance sur scène. Il y avait énormément de headbang, mais leurs pieds semblaient être collés ou vissés dans la scène. Ce n’est pas un groupe qui a réinventé la roue, mais malgré tout, ils m’ont fait passer un bon moment.
Fuming Mouth
Ce groupe, originaire de Milford, Massachusetts, dont je ne connaissais pas l’existence, existe depuis 2013. Ils nous ont joués trois chansons de leur EP Beyond the Tomb suivis de quelques autres pièces tirées de leur discographie.
C’est un groupe de death metal/crust. Nous avons droit à une performance remplie d’énergie. Sans se lancer partout, ils savent divertir le côté visuel de la foule. Leur musique est un mélange de pesanteur et lenteur mélangé à quelque chose de plus énergique. Ils ont des riffs vraiment accrocheurs et j’ai bien aimé la versatilité du chanteur guitariste qui passe du growl au mid range pitch et avec un soupçon de voix clean. Il est très charismatique et il a réussi à faire embarquer la foule, qui était plutôt timide jusqu’à présent, en leur demandant de faire un circle pit. Celui-ci a duré jusqu’à la fin de leur setlist.
Ce fût un très agréable moment passé en leur compagnie. Ils ont livré la marchandise.
Frozen Soul
Le groupe basé à Dallas, Texas nous présente un style death metal avec la formule deux guitares, basse (qui soit dit en passant est assuré par une femme) drum et un chanteur. Le groupe a énormément d’énergie sur scène. Les guitaristes se promènent sur la scène et ils ont réellement une belle chimie entre eux. La bassiste a une bonne prestance même si elle ne prend pas tant d’espace que ça sur scène. C’est plutôt son attitude qui a attiré mon attention.
Le chanteur, avec son gabarit imposant, a une prestance vraiment intéressante. Il est aussi énormément charismatique. Il sait comment intéragir avec la foule en demandant des circle pits constamment. Il a une voix plutôt grave et bien maitrisée. Musicalement parlant, ils sont très bons et sans aller dans la musique complexe et technique, ils sont plutôt simples et in your face. C’est le genre de musique qui s’headbang très bien par la lenteur des chansons. J’ai également bien aimé les changements de tempo non prévisible dans leur composition.
Mention spéciale au chanteur pour son pied de micro en chaînes et au fait qu’il a pris le temps de souligner à quel point la famille (groupe de musique et les spectateurs) l’ont aidé à passer au travers le deuil de la mort son frère.
Frozen Soul est un groupe que j’aimerais bien revoir.
Terror
Ce groupe de Los Angeles œuvre plutôt dans le hardcore ce qui est moins dans mon style. Par contre, nous pouvons ressentir leur énergie palpable. Les gars sont fous. Ils se garochent littéralement partout. Nous ne savons pas où regarder tellement il y a de l’action sur scène. De ce que je peux constater, ils ont déjà un fanbase bien établi à Montréal et il y a de l’action dans le pit. Niveau composition, nous avons droit à de la musique plutôt rythmée et entrainante, mais le côté technique est mis de côté pour plutôt nous envoyer ça en pleine gorge. Malheureusement, je trouve qu’il manque énormément de variété au niveau de la composition. Le tout fini par devenir redondant surtout au niveau des partitions de batterie qui font qu’au final, toutes les chansons se ressemblent beaucoup. Il y a beaucoup d’action au niveau des voix. Beaucoup de réponse vocal/back vocal ce qui ajoute une dynamique intéressante au groupe.
Malgré le fait que leur style musical n’est pas ma tasse de thé, je dois avouer que leur performance fut plaisante à regarder et écouter. Pour les fans de Hardcore, vous ne serez pas déçus.
Despised Icon
Le groupe local de la soirée. C’est un groupe que j’ai pu voir évoluer au fil des années. Je les ai vus sous plusieurs formes et différent line up. On remonte même au temps où Alex Erian était le batteur et non le chanteur et ce, il y a plus de 20 ans. Donc, on s’entend pour dire que le groupe n’a plus besoin de présentation. Ce qui me surprend le plus quand je les vois, c’est l’intensité des partitions de drum. Il est tout simplement une machine. Les deux chanteurs se complètent bien. D’autant plus qu’ils prennent énormément de place sur scène.
Les interactions avec le public sont vraiment professionnels, pertinentes et nous pouvons le sentir qu’ils sont heureux d’être là pour nous ce soir. Les guitaristes nous servent des partitions plutôt intéressantes. On parle d’un mélange de partitions techniques ou pesantes pour les moments avec des breaks downs. Despised Icon est un des rares bands qui ont réussi à me faire apprécier les breakdowns, car, il y a toujours quelque chose au niveau du drum qui les rend brutal et non monotone.
Ils ont bien balancé leur setlist en pigeant un peu partout dans leur discographie. Nous avons eu droit a : Beast, Day of Mourning qu’ils ont dédié à Trevor (rip) chanteur de The Black Dahlia Murder, In the Arms of Perdition, Purgatory et quelques autres pièces, pour ne nommer que celles-là.
Comme toujours, Despised Icon nous ont livré une performance forte en énergie.
The Black Dahlia Murder
Je n’ai malheureusement jamais eu l’opportunité de voir le groupe avec Trevor au vocal. Un chanteur que je considère comme quelqu’un de très difficile à remplacer. Mais je tiens à préciser que son remplaçant (Brian Eschbach qui a laissé sa guitare pour se consacrer à la voix) a très bien accompli le travail. C’est la première fois que je vois ce groupe qui est venu tout droit de Detroit pour nous botter le derrière. Je tiens à dire mission accomplie.
Nous avons droit à toute une performance remplie de professionnalisme et de tightness. Les riffs de guitares tranchants et mélodiques nous ont été livré avec une perfection indéniable. Le batteur est tout simplement impeccable autant par sa rapidité que sa précision. Pour ce qui est de la voix, Trevor était un chanteur qui maitrisait autant les hi que les low pitch et je trouvais que les low pitch manquaient énormément à la performance du groupe. Mais je n’enlève rien à Brian pour sa performance, car il a très bien livré la marchandise.

PHOBOPHILIC
It’s at 6 o’clock sharp that the group arrives on stage.
I don’t know that old school death metal band that comes straight from North Dakota. What caught my attention the most was the particularly low pitch vocal, which reminds me of the good years of Chris Barns (ex. Cannibal Corpse/ Six Feet Under). They have slow and heavy riffs which really give the opportunity to head bang. Sometimes it’s faster with more energetic riffs. Sometimes, they have nice polyrhythms that take the listener out of the comfort of 4/4.
Unfortunately, they didn’t had a lot of presence on stage. There was a lot of headbanging, but their feet seem to be glued or screwed into the scene. They’re not a band that reinvented the wheel, but they still gave me a great time.
FUMING MOUTH
This band from Milford, Massachusetts, that I never heard of, exist since 2013. They played us 3 songs from their EP Beyond the Tomb followed by a few other pieces from their discography. It’s a death metal / crust band. We have a performance filled with energy. Without throwing themselves everywhere, they know how to entertain the visual side of the crowd. Their music is a mix of heavy and slow, mixed with something more energetic. They have really catchy riffs and I liked the versatility of the guitarist singer who goes from growl to mid-range pitch and with a hint of clean vocals. He is very charismatic, and he managed to get the crowd, who had been rather shy so far, on board by asking them to make a circle pit. This one lasted until the end of their setlist. It was a very pleasant moment spent in their company.
FROZEN SOUL
The group based in Dallas, Texas, presents us a death metal style with 2 guitars, bass (which by the way is provided by a woman) drum and a singer. The band has a lot of energy on stage. The guitarists walk around the stage, and they really have a great chemistry between them. The bass player has a good presence, even if she doesn’t take up that much space on stage. It was her attitude that caught my attention. The singer, with his imposing size, has a fascinating presence. He is also very charismatic. He knows how to interact with the crowd by asking for circle pits. Furthermore, he has a deep and well-controlled voice. Musically speaking, they are very good and without going into complex and technical music, they are rather simple and in your face. It’s the kind of music that gets headbanged very well by slow songs. I also liked the unpredictable tempo changes in their composition. Special mention to the singer for his chain microphone stand and the fact that he took the time to tell us how much the family (music group and the spectators) helped him to go through the grief of his brother. A group that I would love to see again.
TERROR
This band from Los Angeles is more in hardcore which is less in my style. On the other hand, we can feel their palpable energy. Guys are crazy. They literally throw themselves everywhere. We don’t know where to look because there is so much action on stage. From what I can see, they already have an established fan base in Montreal and there is action in the pit. In terms of composition, their music is rhythmic and catchy, but the technical aspect is put aside to be more »in your face ». Unfortunately, there is a lacks a lot of variety in their composition. Everything ends up to be redundant, especially at the drum, which make the songs sound the same in the end. There’s a lot of vocal action. Lots of vocal response/back vocals, which adds an interesting dynamic to the band. Despite the fact that their musical style is not my cup of tea, I must admit that their performance was pleasant to watch and listen to. For hardcore fans, you won’t be disappointed.
DESPIRED ICON
The local band of the evening. This is a group that I have seen evolve over the years. I have seen them in many forms and different line-ups. We even go back to the time when Alex Erian was the drummer and not the singer, more than 20 years ago. So, we agree to say that the group no longer needs an introduction. What surprises me the most when I see them is the intensity of the drum. He is simply a machine. The 2 singers complement each other well. They take a lot of space on stage. The interactions with the public are really professional, relevant, and we can feel that they are happy to be here with us tonight. The guitarists play interesting parts. We are talking about a mix of technical or heavy riffs when they play a break-down. Despised Icon is one of the few bands that managed to make me appreciate the breakdowns, because there is always something with the drums that makes them brutal and not monotonous. Their set list is well-balanced. They picked songs everywhere in their discography. the played songs like: Beast, Day of Mourning which they dedicated to Trevor (rip) singer of The Black Dahlia Murder, In the Arms of Perdition, purgatory and a few other songs to name a few. As always, Despised Icon gave us a high energy performance.
THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER
Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to see the band with Trevor on vocals. A singer that I consider very difficult to replace. But I would like to point out that his replacement (Brian Eschbach who left his guitar to devote himself to vocals) did a good job. This is the first time I’ve seen this band who came straight from Detroit to kick our butts. I want to say mission accomplished. We had a whole performance filled with professionalism and tightness. The sharp and melodic guitar riffs were delivered to us with undeniable perfection. The drummer is simply impeccable in terms of both his speed and his precision. As for the voice, Trevor was a singer who mastered the hi as well as the low pitch, and I found that the low pitch were missing a lot from the band’s performance. But I don’t take anything away from Brian’s performance, because he nailed it.
