Critique d’album: Mortal Rites – Death In Heaven, Life In Hell (Décembre 2024)

Le groupe québécois death metal Mortal Rites a sorti leur premier EP intitulé « Death In Heaven, Life In Hell » le 13 décembre 2024 dernier. Enregistré, mixé et masterisé en entièreté par le chanteur et guitariste principal Christopher Payeur, cet album se voit être un vent de fraîcheur dans la scène métal québécoise. En provenance de la ville de Québec et Hull, le groupe nous apporte un son influencé par les légendaires groupes Morbid Angel, Death, Bolt Thrower ainsi qu’une petite touche de thrash old school à la Testament.

Chaque pièce apporte sa petite touche unique tout en gardant les éléments clés du death metal old school : des riffs agressifs, un vocal guttural profond tout en ayant un drum qui détruit tout sur son passage. La première pièce « In Thy Glory » accroche dès le début et nous démontre que les gars sont bourrés de talents et sont là pour tout casser. Tout au long de l’écoute de l’album, j’ai eu une énorme satisfaction de faire aller ma tête au rythme endiablé des pièces, signe que je suis prêt à aller dans le pit si jamais j’en avais la chance. La pièce « Cannibalism » est mon coup de cœur de l’album me rappelant par moment des passages de l’album « Altars of Madness » de Morbid Angel.

Considérant que le groupe a produit de A à Z l’album incluant la pochette, je lève mon chapeau à Mortal Rites pour le produit final qui a été livré. Le mix entre le death metal old school mélangé avec un son plus moderne est un point fort. Nous pouvons voir les grandes influences du death metal old school des années 90 tout au long de l’album. Mortal Rites possède le potentiel de devenir un joueur majeur dans la scène death metal au Canada.

Je souhaite bonne chance aux gars de Mortal Rites. J’ai bien hâte d’entendre du nouveau matériel, le tout m’a laissé sur ma faim. Merci et à bientôt ! Peut-être en spectacle quelque part au Québec, qui sait ?

Quebec death metal band Mortal Rites has just released their first EP titled « Death In Heaven, Life In Hell » dated December 13, 2024. Entirely recorded, mixed and mastered by the singer and lead guitarist Christopher Payeur, this EP brings a breath of fresh air to the Quebec metal scene. Based in Quebec City and Hull, the band offers a sound inspired by legendary death metal bands such as Morbid Angel, Death, Bolt Thrower and old school thrash metal band Testament.

Each track has a unique sound while keeping the essential elements of old school death metal : aggressive riffs, guttural vocals and an insane drum that destroys everything in his path. The first track « In Thy Glory » captured my attention and shows that each member of the band has a lot of talent and is serious about the album. They are there to destroy everything ! During the entire time that I was listening to the album, I was headbanging to the sound of each track. If I had the chance to go in a pit at that exact moment, I would go right away!The track « Cannibalism  » is my favorite of the whole EP reminding me of the first album of Morbid Angel « Altars of Madness « 

Considering that the group produced the entire album from start to finish, including the artwork, I can say I am truly impressed with the final product that Mortal Rites delivered. The mix between old school death metal and modern death metal is one of my highlights on this album. We can hear the significant influence from the days when old school death metal was a huge deal in the 90’s. Mortal Rites has a great potential to be a major player in the Canadian death metal scene.
