C’est d’Edmonton en Alberta qu’IDOLATRY lançait, en novembre 2014, une première galette de son Black Metal superbement haineux et incisif. Composé de quatre pièces pour un peu plus de 25 minutes de durée totale, l’effort présente des pièces musicales généralement rapides et construites avec soin qui rappellent, par leur méchanceté et leur froideur, les Mayhem, Darkthrone et Gorgoroth d’antan. L’efficacité est donc au rendez-vous, même si la bande ne sort pas trop des sentiers battus musicalement parlant. C’est donc Lörd Matzigkeitus avec ses incantations, hurlements déments et vociférations variées et exécutées avec une conviction effrayante qui vient distinguer le groupe du lot. En somme, très bel effort des Albertains, mais on en voudrait plus!
Il a depuis fait paraître «Clefs au Chambre de Tristêsse (A Key to the Room of Sadness)» que je vous mets ci-dessous, un single qui ne se retrouve que sur «Infection Born of Ending», un split vinyl 7″ avec le groupe états-uniens de l’Ohio, Unrest.

It is from Edmonton, Alberta that IDOLATRY launched in November 2014, the first demo of its superbly hateful and incisive Black Metal. Consisting of four tracks for a little more than 25 minutes, the effort has generally fast and carefully crafted songs that recall, for their wickedness and coldness, the old Mayhem, Darkthrone and Gorgoroth. The efficiency is there, even though the band does not come out too much from the beaten path musically speaking. So it is Lörd Matzigkeitus with his incantations, demented screams and varied shouts executed with frightening conviction that distinguishes the band from the pack. In short, it is a very good effort from the Albertans, but we want more!
They released earlier this year «Clefs au Chambre de Tristêsse (A Key to the Room of Sadness)», a single that appears exclusively on «Infection Born of Ending», a limited split release with Ohio’s UNREST on 7″ vinyl.

Formé en 1993 et reformé en 2008, OSCULUM INFAME est l’un des plus vieux groupes de Black Metal de la scène française. Cependant, avant cette année il n’avait publié qu’un seul album complet et celui-ci datait de 1997.
Remédiant à la situation, la troupe parisienne nous offre cette année un album superbe, consistant et cohérent doté d’une production sans faille. S’ouvrant sur une introduction composée d’un échantillon de «Requiem (Kyrie)» de György Ligeti combiné à un échantillonnage d’éruption volcanique, l’album ne contient effectivement aucun temps mort dans son assaut sonore fait de pièces toutes aussi intéressantes les unes que les autres.
Le fanatique de Métal noir y trouvera donc ivresse mélodique, atmosphères sombres et puissance sonore interprétée avec une optique moderne, variée. Il s’agit donc d’une sortie à se procurer absolument pour tous les fanatiques de Black Metal français. Faites vite, le disque compact est limité à 500 copies!

Formed in 1993 and reformed in 2008, OSCULUM INFAME is one of the oldest Black Metal band of the French scene. However, before this year they had released only one full album and this one goes back to 1997. Finally, the Paris veterans offer this year a superb album, consistent and coherent with a flawless production.
Opening with an introduction made up of a sample of György Ligeti‘s «Requiem (Kyrie)» combined with a volcanic eruption, the album really contains no flaws in its deadly assault made of eleven interesting compositions.
The Black Metal fanatic will therefore find melodic intoxication and dark atmospheres in this sonic assault interpreted with a varied modern perspective. It is therefore an album to get absolutely for all French Black Metal fanatics. Hurry, the CD is limited to 500 copies!

Formée en 2010, OUTRE-TOMBE est une formation Death Metal de la vieille école originaire de Québec. Sur ce premier opus en carrière, le quatuor présente son métal de mort rappelant les groupes suédois tels que Grave, Dismember et Entombed avec un aplomb impressionnant et une production bien grasse qui convient parfaitement au style choisi.
Très simples, mais extrêmement efficaces, les compositions de la bande auront donc tout pour décrocher la nuque des amateurs du genre. De plus, fait plutôt rare chez les formations Death Metal de la belle province, OUTRE-TOMBE livre tous ses assauts en français, ce qui contribuera à les distinguer de la masse.
En somme, «Répurgation» est un album fortement conseillé à ceux qui aiment leur Death Metal simple, efficace, vil et bien gras!

Formed in 2010, OUTRE-TOMBE is an old school Death Metal band from Quebec City. On its first album, the quartet presents its Death Metal reminiscent of Swedish bands like Grave, Dismember and Entombed with an impressive aplomb and a dirty production that perfectly suits the chosen style. Very simple, but highly effective, the band’s compositions therefore have everything to dislocate neck vertebrae.
Moreover, a thing rather rare for Death Metal formations in our beautiful province, OUTRE-TOMBE throws all assaults in French, which will help to distinguish them from the pack. (*for foreign readers who don’t know, Quebec is french-speaking – ed)
In sum, «Répurgation» is an album highly recommended for those who like their Death Metal simple, efficient, vile and very dirty!

Formation initiée par deux résidants de Québec d’origine bulgare (Stanislav Stefanovski (Phosphorus) et Dobrin Stoyanov), Цар Стангра (se prononce Tsar Stangra) présentait cet été deux démos réalisées par les deux sbires s’occupant respectivement de tous les instruments. La musique présentée sur la deuxième de ces démos est un Black Metal païen dans la plus pure tradition des pays de l’Est rappelant inévitablement les œuvres des années 1990 de groupes comme Nokturnal Mortum, entre autres.
Avec des paroles exclusivement bulgares, un fort penchant pour le romantisme nationaliste, des pièces atmosphériques au tempo plutôt lent menées par d’excellentes mélodies de guitare et de claviers, le tout a ce qu’il faut pour plaire aux amateurs de ce type de Black Metal. De plus, la production de type maison, mais tout de même très bien ficelée saura ravir le cœur des nostalgiques des années 1990. Le principal défaut de l’œuvre sera sa trop courte durée. Mention spéciale aux superbes solos de guitare de Dobrin Stoyanov!

Created by two Quebec city residents of Bulgarian origin (Stanislav Stefanovski (Phosphorus) and Dobrin Stoyanov), Цар Стангра (pronounced Tsar Stangra) released this summer two demos made by the two henchmen taking care of all instruments. The music presented on the second of these demos is a pagan Black Metal in the purest tradition of the Eastern countries inevitably recalling the works of 1990s bands like Nokturnal Mortum, among others.
With only Bulgarian lyrics, a strong penchant for nationalistic romanticism, atmospheric songs rather slow in tempo brought forth by excellent guitar and keyboards melodies, it has what it takes to please fans of this type of Black Metal. In addition, the home-studio type production, still very well put together, will delight the heart of the nostalgics of the 1990s The main defect of this work is being too short. A special mention to the superb guitar solos from Dobrin Stoyanov!

De Cambridge en Angleterre, la formation de Black Metal atmosphérique TERRA nous présentait son premier long-jeu en carrière. Celui-ci consiste en trois pièces entre 11 minutes et des poussières pour la plus courte et plus de 15 minutes pour la plus longue.
Si la production de Matt Crawford est généralement à la hauteur avec des tons de guitare saturée riches et une batterie puissante, le groupe semble malheureusement se tirer dans le pied avec des pièces beaucoup trop longues pour leur propre bien, basées sur quelques motifs circulaires qui semblent ne jamais aboutir sur un orgasme auditif. Les trois pièces s’achèvent d’ailleurs sur plus de 40 secondes de feedback de guitare qui n’apportent absolument rien et accentuent la répétitivité de l’album. Si certaines parties des trois pièces se révèlent intéressantes, le groupe aurait eu avantage à affiner son écriture et à éliminer la masturbation musicale qui rallonge inutilement la sauce. De plus, les motifs de batterie semblent parfois ne pas du tout être les meilleurs pour mettre en valeur les guitares. En outre, le chant hurlé est utilisé seulement sporadiquement comme effet sonore, plus que comme instrument sur l’album et se retrouve écrasé complètement en dessous de tout le reste et n’apporte donc pas grand-chose à l’ensemble.
En somme, l’album ressemble à un jam enregistré sans vraiment d’écriture préalable qui comporte quelques bons moments perdus dans un maelström de motifs circulaires qui ne mènent nulle part au final.

From Cambridge in England, the formation of atmospheric Black Metal TERRA released its first full length album a few months ago. The latter consists of three songs ticking at some 11 minutes for the shortest one and more than 15 minutes for the longest.
If the production of Matt Crawford usually live up to what is expected with rich tones of saturated guitar and powerful drums, the band seems unfortunately to shoot itself in the foot with way too long songs for their own good, based on some circular patterns that seem to never built up to an auditory orgasm. All three songs are even completed with more than 40 seconds of guitar feedback that brings absolutely nothing to the song, apart from accentuating the repetitiveness of the album. If parts of the three tracks sound interesting, the band would have benefited to refine its writing and eliminate unnecessary musical masturbation that just makes the songs longer. In addition, the drum patterns sometimes seem not at all to be the best to showcase the guitars. Furthermore, the screaming vocals are used only sporadically as a sound effect, rather than as an instrument and are completely crushed beneath everything else and therefore do not add much to the mix.
In sum, the album sounds like a jam recorded without prior writing that really has some good moments lost in a maelström of circular patterns that ultimately lead nowhere.
