Trois ans après leur premier opus, «Multispectral Supercontinuum», la formation Québécoise de Metal extrême, technique et instrumental Teramobil offre à la population son deuxième album, «Magnitude of Thoughts». Ayant fait moi-même la critique de «Multispectral Supercontinuum», j’ai décidé de maintenir la tendance et de vous faire une analyse de la nouvelle oeuvre de Teramobil. L’album fut enregistré à différents endroits (et je cite la page bandcamp):

Ça commence par un coup de snare comme une tape en plein dans la figure, puis «Terahertz» débute avec un riff de tapping de guitare qui monte progressivement en tonalité comme une angoisse, comme un suspense brutal, accompagné bien sûr d’un bon vieux blastbeat. Je l’ai déjà dit dans ma critique de «Multispectral Continuum», mais je tiens à le redire: Teramobil, c’est sans préliminaires. Ce n’est pas pour les saintes nitouches. Ça enchaîne avec une sorte de leitmotiv qui reproduit un peu la tension et la tonalité du premier riff, puis c’est là qu’il faut observer l’ouvrage tonal: les notes choisies comportent un de ces grooves, subtil, mais à la fois palpable et c’est un trait qui fait la beauté du style à Teramobil, ça groove à fond par moments. À défaut de me répéter, l’autre dimension exploitée par le groupe, est à mes oreilles, celle de l’angoisse à travers le son. Ça alterne en quelque sorte de l’un à l’autre. Le jeu de Mathieu Bérubé exploite beaucoup les harmoniques de la guitare, les sonorités stridentes et dérangeantes.

Puis vient la pièce titre: «Magnitude of Thoughts». Ça commence avec un riff gras, badass et catchy. On a droit à la basse de Forest dans le spotlight assez tôt, alors que dans un riff bien groovy, c’est lui prend le lead avec ses 6 cordes qui, malgré leur registre sonore grave, n’empêche pas le musicien derrière l’instrument d’exploiter le plus haut registre que peut atteindre le dit instrument. Ce même riff reviendra plus tard dans la pièce, donc on pourrait peut être le surnommer de «chorus» quoiqu’il est difficile d’attribuer des traits conventionnels à un groupe de musique dont l’ensemble de l’oeuvre me paraît quand même éloigné des conventions du Metal que l’on connaît. Un petit festin de dissonances fait irruption, puis ensuite, après le retour dudit «refrain» une structure un peu plus rock’n’roll prend place avec l’arrivée d’un invité sur un instrument que l’on n’aurait probablement pas envisagé d’entendre dans ce contexte là: Antoine Baril (Augury, Symbolic, Contemplator) à l’orgue. Le featuring d’Antoine apporte un méchant bon (je pense que vous allez peut-être vous tanner que j’emploie ce mot là, mais…) groove à la pièce.

Les festivités de dissonances ne ramollissent pas avec l’arrivée de la pièce «Thanatonaut». De plus, cette pièce inclut la participation d’un autre invité (à la guitare cette fois-ci): Luc Lemay de Gorguts. La pièce gagne donc en complexité et en saturation puisqu’il y a deux guitares distinctes. Il faut donc porter davantage attention pour capter toutes les subtilités dans le jeu des quatre musiciens. D’ailleurs ce n’est pas très répandu qu’un bassiste prenne parfois la place du lead dans le Metal en général mais on a cette chance là avec quelqu’un comme Forest. Son lead à la basse apporte un aspect intéressant. La pièce, dépendamment dans quel riff, est parfois un peu dure à comprendre dans son ensemble donc à des moments comme ça je préfère pour ma part me concentrer sur la mélodie de la basse qui sait faire bien plus que de soutenir la fondamentale. La musique de Teramobil, c’est comme une sorte de delirium, un peu comme une sorte de schizophrénie si je peux me permettre la métaphore, comme une condition psychologique instable dont celui qui en souffre n’est jamais à l’abri. C’est lourd dans le bon et le mauvais sens du terme, mais pour donner un bon résultat final à l’équation. Disons simplement qu’il faut avoir l’esprit robuste et être capable de sauter les barrières mentales des sons dérangeants, car derrières ces barrières se trouvent une multitude de subtilités et d’éléments artistiques ayant un niveau d’intellect très élevé.

La pesanteur du drum sera soulignée avec l’introduction de la pièce suivante, «Deconstruct Metabolism». Le jeu des cordistes est un peu plus espacé dans celle-ci, du moins au début. Les tappings au son déjanté amène une dimension quasi «science-fiction» selon moi. On dirait presque qu’on entend une sorte de technologie extraterrestre en délire. J’aime bien le fait que dans cette pièce-là, les riffs sont un peu plus espacés et on peut profiter d’un peu plus de durées de notes par moments. Mais ce ne sera pas sans un retour constant aux sons stridents de la guitare, les harmoniques, squeals, trills et là je dois couper court à mon jargon de musicien. Je vais juste ajouter que la guitare à Mathieu doit se dire des fois: «Mais qu’est-ce qui m’arrive!». S’il fait crier les humaines de la même façon que les guitares, je ne suis pas sûr si c’est sécuritaire!

C’est agréable d’entendre un son de batterie enregistré de qualité dans une production, mais également la façon de jouer d’Alexandre Dupras est un atout majeur à l’appréciation du son. Son jeu est nuancé et organique, malgré la complexité qui n’est pas accessible à tous, je peux vous dire que ce n’est pas un simple batteur à blast beats comme certains fans de Metal se plaignent souvent d’entendre dans la musique. C’est à travers la pièce «Synchrotron» que le plaisir m’a été donné de constater tout ça. Chapeau également aux choix d’accords de guitare, ils apportent une couleur spéciale, voire joyeuse, euphorique, mais il faut savoir apprécier en petites doses car le changement est rapide dans les arrangements musicaux de Teramobil. J’aime aussi quand la basse fait un son qui claque, à travers la technique du slap (je crois).

Je n’irai pas en détail dans l’analyse de chaque pièce, quoique je l’ai déja fait pour une partie de l’album… Je vais simplement ajouter que ma partie préférée de la sixième pièce, «Exoteric», est quand la basse fait un solo qui sonne joyeux (parce que c’est dans la gamme majeure). C’est probablement le moment qui respire le plus dans l’album, puis ça permet d’apprécier plus attentivement le jeu de Forest en mode soliste, avec sa précision et toutes ses subtilités.

En conclusion, «Magnitude of Thoughts» c’est 31 minutes de débauche, de groove, et c’est aussi un voyage dans un univers musical fucké à souhait mais également coloré. C’est du matériel technique et bien exécuté. Pour les fans de stock lourd, brutal et qui n’ont pas peur des sons stridents et déjantés: vous devez vous procurer «Magnitude of Thoughts» de Teramobil.

Three years after their first opus, «Multispectral Supercontinuum», Quebec’s extreme/technical/instrumental Metal outfit Teramobil have released their second album, «Magnitude of Thoughts». Since it was me who wrote the review for «Multispectral Supercontinuum», I have decided to keep walking the same path and do an analysis of Teramobil‘s new opus. The album has been recorded in different places (the following info is from their bandcamp page):

Now, let’s talk about its content.

It starts with a single and strong snare hit, like a blow to the face, and then «Terahertz» starts with a guitar tapping riff that increases progressively in tone like an anguish, like a brutal suspense, accompanied by, of course, a good old blastbeat. I already said it in my review of «Multispectral Continuum», but I have to say it again, Teramobil, it is without any preliminaries. It is not for stiff asses. The song goes on with a sort of leitmotiv that reproduces a little bit the tension and tone of the first riff, and that’s where one must observe the tonal work: the chosen notes holds one of these subtle grooves, but which is also palpable, and that is a trait that makes the beauty of Teramobil‘s style, it is really groovy at times. I may be repeating myself, but the other dimension that is exploited by the band is, to my ears, the anguish. The music often alternates between the two. Mathieu Bérubé‘s playing often exploits the guitar’s harmonics, screeching and disturbing sounds.

And then comes the title track: «Magnitude of Thoughts». It starts with a fat, badass, and catchy riff. We get to enjoy Forest‘s bass in the spotlight pretty early, as he takes the lead with his 6 strings that, despite their low sound register, doesn’t prevent the musician behind the instrument to exploit the higher register that can be reached by said instrument. This same riff will come later during the track, therefore we could probably label it as the «chorus», though it is kind of hard to assign conventional traits to a band whose material seems to me like far from the Metal music conventions that we know. A little feast of dissonances comes in, then, after the return of said «chorus», a more rock’n’roll structure takes place with the arrival of a guest that we would have probably not expected in this musical context: Antoine Baril (Augury, Symbolic, Contemplator) playing organ. Antoine‘s featuring brings a really nice (I think you may at some point get tired of me using that word, but…) groove into the track.

The dissonant festivities don’t soften with the arrival of the track «Thanatonaut». Also, this track includes the involvement of another guest (on the guitar this time): Luc Lemay from Gorguts. The track therefore increases in terms of complexity and saturation because there is two distinct guitar parts. One must therefore pay more attention in order to capture all the subtleties in the playing of the four musicians. Besides, it is not very common that the bass player sometimes takes the lead spot in Metal in general but we sure get the opportunity to hear that with someone like Forest. His bass leads brings in an interesting aspect. The track is sometimes hard to hear as a whole (depending on the riff), thus, when it is the case I prefer to focus on the bass’ melody that can do much more than supporting the root notes. Teramobil‘s music is like some kind of delirium, like some sort of schizophrenia if I can allow myself to do that metaphor, like an instable psychological condition in which the one that suffers from it is never safe from it. It is heavy in both the good and bad meanings of the term, but in the end it gives a great result. Let’s just say that one must have a sturdy mind and be able to jump across the mental barriers sometimes brought by the disturbing sounds because behind these barriers, there is plenty of subtleties and artistic elements that have a high level of intellect.

The heaviness of the drums is highlighted in the intro of the next track, «Deconstruct Metabolism». The playing of the strings players breathes a little more in this one, at least in the beginning. The crazy sounding guitar tappings bring an almost sci-fi dimension in my opinion. It almost seems like we hear some sort of alien technology going nuts! I like the fact that in this song, there is a little bit more space in the riffing, so that we can enjoy a little more the length of some of the notes that are played. But that will not be without constantly getting back the screechy sounds of the guitar, harmonics, squeals, trills and now I have to cut short in my musician vocabulary. I will simply add that Mathieu‘s guitar must sometimes wonder: «What the hell is happening to me». If he makes women scream the same way he makes guitars scream, I’m not sure if it is safe!

It is pleasant to hear a good quality recorded drum sound in a production, but also, Alexandre Dupras‘ playing is a valuable asset to the appreciation of the sound. His playing is nuanced and organic, and despite the complexity that is not accessible for everyone, I can tell you that he’s not a simple « blast beat » drummer, which many Metal fans complain to hear often in Metal music. It is through the track «Synchrotron» that I have had the pleasure of taking that into consideration. Kudos to the choice of guitar chords also, they bring a special color, possibly happy and euphoric, but one must be able to appreciate that in small doses because changes come fast in Teramobil‘s music arrangements. I also like when the bass does a « snapping » sound, through the slap technique (I think).

I won’t go into detailed analysis of each track, though I already did it for a part of the album… I will simply add that my favorite part of the sixth track, «Exoteric», is when the bass plays a solo that sounds happy (because it is in the major scale). It is probably the moment that breathes the most in the whole album, and it allows to enjoy in a more focused way Forest‘s playing in soloist mode, with his precision and all his subtleties.

In conclusion, «Magnitude of Thoughts», it is 31 minutes of debauchery, groove, and it is also a travel inside a wicked musical universe, but also colorful. It is some technical and well executed material. For fans of heavy and brutal material, and those who are not scared of screechy and crazy sounds, you have to grab a copy of Teramobil‘s «Magnitude of Thoughts»
