Voici le compte rendu de Phil Grondin et les photos prises par Corinne Ainscow lors du spectacle de Wolves In The Throne Room présenté par Extensive Enterprise au Théâtre Fairmount de Montréal le 5 octobre 2023 et qui mettait également à l’affiche Blackbraid, Gaerea et Hoaxed.

Une soirée à saveur black metal était présentée jeudi dernier dans le cadre de la tournée « Crypt of Ancestral Knowledge Tour » au Théâtre Fairmount avec les formations Wolves In The Throne Room, Blackbraid, Gaerea et Hoaxed, le tout présenté par Extensive Enterprise. Le Théâtre Fairmount affichait presque complet avec seulement quelques billets disponible à la porte. Un bon signe pour un show présenté en pleine semaine!
Hoaxed
Hoaxed donne le coup d’envoi de la soirée à 19h en présentant un set des plus uniques pour un spectacle de black metal. Tirant plus vers le rock avec une légère dose de growl, Hoaxed a présenté des chansons de leur dernier album « Two Shadows ». Le trio de l’Oregon a su accrocher la foule montréalaise puisque plusieurs personnes se sont procurés de la merch du groupe ! Les chansons ont su m’accrocher par moment, mais ne semblaient pas être faites pour un spectacle de black metal. J’aurais vu ce groupe ouvrir pour un spectacle plus du style heavy metal. Bref, je n’enlève en rien au talent d’Hoaxed, mais leur prestation de 30 minutes m’a semblé vraiment spéciale pour ce genre de tournée.
Gaerea
Gaerea continue la soirée avec leur black metal en provenance du Portugal. Ce groupe ne cesse de me surprendre à chaque occasion que j’ai pu les voir. Leur dernier passage remontait à mars 2023 en sol québécois lors de la tournée avec Rotting Christ. Le groupe a interprété avec brio les différentes chansons de leur dernier album « Mirage » puisque la majorité des chansons joués provenaient de cet album. Le côté théâtral de Gaerea a ajouté une dynamique de plus à leur performance puisque les membres sont masqués et le chanteur ne cesse de bouger sur scène tout en gesticulant des mains. Une fois de plus, Gaerea a offert une solide performance d’environ 30 minutes et un spectacle en tant que tête d’affiche est plus que nécessaire. Ce groupe continue de gagner en popularité dans le monde du black metal et il y a une raison pourquoi, ils sont bourrés de talents! À bouger de même sur scène, je comprends pourquoi il faisait chaud dans la salle!
Blackbraid
Blackbraid entre sur scène et tout comme Gaerea, ce groupe en est à sa deuxième présence en sol québécois cette année. Ayant joué avec Dark Funeral en mai dans le cadre du Decibel Magazine Tour, Blackbraid offre un black metal ayant quelques passages atmosphérique. Le groupe a su m’impressionner encore une fois durant quelques passages. La qualité en live est quasi identique qu’en studio. Le chanteur Sgah’gahsowáh est le compositeur principal du groupe et les musiciens présents sur scène pour l’accompagner ont rendu justice. Tout comme Gaerea, grand nombre de personnes sont venus voir ce groupe qui ne cesse de gagner en popularité depuis leur début. Étant actif seulement depuis 2022, Blackbraid a joué pendant plus de 45 minutes un black metal agressif rempli de riffs accrocheurs, de blastbeasts rapides et d’un chant unique. Bref, l’énergie était au rendez-vous pour eux et il faisait chaud au Fairmount! (Un peu trop même…)
Wolves In The Throne Room
Wolves In The Throne Room (WITTR) termine la soirée avec une longue intro afin de plonger le public dans l’atmosphère du groupe. Bougies, crânes et un visuel unique aborde la scène avant de voir les quatre musiciens entrer chacun à tour de rôle à leur place respective. La pièce « Mountain Magick » commence avec un blastbeat rapide du drum et un coup de tonnerre tombe sur la foule restante dans le Fairmount. Malheureusement, plusieurs personnes ont quitté le Fairmount puisque ceux-ci n’étaient pas intéressés par WITTR. Tout ce que j’ai à dire est qu’ils ont manqué un excellent groupe. WITTR est un groupe atmosphérique à la base, donc j’admets que ce n’est pas tout le monde qui aime ce sous-genre de black metal. Bref, de l’encen était réparti un peu partout dans la foule ce qui rendait l’ambiance encore plus spéciale. WITTR m’a agréablement surpris puisque c’était la première fois que je les voyais en tête d’affiche et sincèrement, chapeau à eux. Ce n’est pas le genre de groupe que je connais grandement, mais leur performance m’a totalement ébloui et surpris. À plusieurs occasions, j’ai savouré la mélodie du groupe et admiré le talent de ces gars-là. Ils ont eu l’occasion de jouer trois pièces de leur dernier album « Primordial Arcana », album sorti en 2021 dont il faisait la promotion avec cette tournée. WITTR a joué quelques pièces à travers leur discographie avant de terminer avec une longue pièce de 18 minutes intitulée « I Will Lay Down My Bones Among the Rocks and Roots ». Une excellente façon de terminer une chaude soirée du mois d’octobre.

An evening with a black metal flavor was presented last Thursday as part of the “Crypt of Ancestral Knowledge Tour” at the Fairmount Theater with the bands Wolves In The Throne Room, Blackbraid, Gaerea and Hoaxed, all presented by Extensive Enterprise. The Fairmount Theater was almost sold out with only a few tickets available at the door. A good sign for a show presented during the middle of the week!
Hoaxed
Hoaxed kicks off the evening at 7 p.m. with a very unique set for a black metal. Leaning more towards rock with a slight dose of growl, Hoaxed presented songs from their latest album “Two Shadows”. The Oregon trio was able to hook the Montreal crowd as several people purchased the group’s merch! The songs were able to hook me at times, but didn’t seem to be made for a black metal show. I would have seen this band opening for a more heavy metal style show. At last, I’m not taking anything away from Hoaxed’s talent, but their 30-minute performance seemed really special to me for this kind of tour.
Gaerea
Gaerea continues the evening with their black metal from Portugal. This group never ceases to amaze me every chance I get to see them. Their last visit was in March 2023 on Quebec soil during the tour with Rotting Christ. The group brilliantly performed the different songs from their latest album “Mirage” since the majority of the songs played came from this album. The theatrical side of Gaerea added another dynamic to their performance since the members are masked and the singer keeps moving on stage while gesturing with his hands. Once again Gaerea delivered a solid performance lasting around 30 minutes and a headlining show is much needed. This band continues to grow in popularity in the black metal world and there is a reason why, they are loaded with talent! Moving like they do on stage, I understand why it was hot in the room!
Blackbraid
Blackbraid enters the stage and just like Gaerea, this group is on its second appearance on Quebec soil this year. Having played with Dark Funeral in May as part of the Decibel Magazine Tour, Blackbraid offers black metal with some atmospheric passages. The group was able to impress me once again during a few passages. The quality live is almost identical to that in the studio. Singer Sgah’gahsowáh is the main composer of the group and the musicians on stage to accompany him did justice. Just like Gaerea, a large number of people came to see this group which has continued to gain popularity since their beginning. Having only been active since 2022, Blackbraid played aggressive black metal for over 45 minutes filled with catchy riffs, fast blastbeasts and unique vocals. In short, the energy was there for them and it was hot at Fairmount! (A little too much…)
Wolves In The Throne Room
Wolves In The Throne Room (WITTR) ends the evening with a long intro to immerse the audience in the group’s atmosphere. Candles, skulls and a unique visual take the stage before seeing the four musicians each take turns entering their respective places. The track “Mountain Magick” begins with a rapid blastbeat from the drum and a clap of thunder falls on the remaining crowd in the Fairmount. Unfortunately, several people left Fairmount because they were not interested in WITTR. All I have to say is they missed out on a great group. WITTR is basically an atmospheric band so I admit that not everyone likes this subgenre of black metal. ncense was spread throughout the crowd which made the atmosphere even more special. WITTR pleasantly surprised me since it was the first time I saw them headlining and sincerely, hats off to them. It’s not the kind of group I’m very familiar with, but their performance totally dazzled and surprised me. On several occasions, I savored the band’s melody and admired the talent of these guys. They had the opportunity to play three pieces from their latest album “Primordial Arcana”, an album released in 2021 so it was promoting with this tour. WITTR played a few pieces through their discography before closing with an 18-minute long piece called “I Will Lay Down My Bones Among the Rocks and Roots.” A great way to end a warm October evening.
