Voici les photos prises par Charles-Alexandre Tourchot lors du spectacle de Archspire présenté par District 7 Production à La Source de la Martinière de Québec le 2 mai 2022 et qui mettait également à l’affiche Entheos, Inferi et Vulvodynia.

Témoignage de mise en contexte
6 années ont passées depuis mon dernier show de métal live. Je me dis que c’est impossible et pourtant, mon calcul est juste. Le dernier spectacle que j’étais aller voir est celui de Parkway Drive et ce en Australie, en 2016 à la fin d’un tour du monde de 1 an. Puis il y a eu le changement de carrière, le retour aux études et la pandémie qui ont fait en sorte que mes années d’abstinence auditive s’accumulaient. De plus, je demeure dans la ville nord-côtière de Sept-Îles depuis 2014 et cela rend l’accessibilité à la scène métal très compliquée. Se rendre à Québec en auto prend minimalement 7h30,rien pour aider. Mais bon, je suis bien installé dans ma nouvelle carrière que je pratique depuis 3 ans et il était temps pour moi de me faire défoncer les tympans de nouveau. J’avais bien choisi mon show, avec 4 bands qui sont bien connus dans la scène métal.
Preuve de cela, le show est sold out. Moi et ma compagne avons tout de même pris le temps d’aller manger chez Pierrot, une cantine bien connue à Limoilou. Fait cocasse, la caissière en voyant ma casquette de Archspire m’a confié que les membres du groupe sont venus manger et qu’ils viennent juste de partir.
Je me disais à ce moment-là qu’il n’y avait pas de raison de se presser, que moi et ma compagne on pouvait arriver à l’heure inscrite sur le billet qui est 19h00, car les spectacles commencent « toujours » avec des bands locaux peu connus et il n’y-a jamais de line-up…Quel con. Tel un amateur, j’arrive en line-up derrière 50 affamés de musiques avec des tattoos et des percings (home sweethome) qui attendent devant moi et le doorman les fait entrer lentement dans le petit barnommé La Source de la Martinière par groupe de 5. J’ai pu entrer vers 19h35 et Vulvodynia venait de terminer. Super. J’aurais pu profiter du fait quej’étais sur la Guest List, mais qui suis-je pour passer devant tous ces gens et surtout laisser ma compagne seule dehors? On est gentleman ou on ne l’est pas, malgré ma passion pour la musique, alors j’ai avalé ma pilule et retenir la leçon pour le prochain concert
Une fois entré, j’aperçois Chaney Crabb, la chanteuse d’Entheos qui s’occupe de sa vente de merch à la table. Moi qui connais le band depuis peu, qui adore leur musique et de surcroit qui trippe sur les « screameuses », je ne fais ni une ni deux et je vais l’aborder. Je lui ai également acheté deuxt-shirts. Elle m’a dit merci et m’a fait un fistbump après que je lui ai souhaité bonne chance pour le show. Je n’ai rien laisser transparaître, mais intérieurement je jubilais d’avoir pu lui parler, vraiment charmante cette fille. Mon seul regret est de ne pas avoir oser lui demander pour prendre une photo avec elle. À partir de ce moment, la soirée prenait son envol. J’ai aussi eu la chance d’enfin rencontrer une amie provenant d’internet, une fan de métal avec qui j’étais modérateur sur un groupe de musique core, également présente à cette soirée.
Vulvodynia
Tel que précédemment mentionné, j’ai entendu quelques bribes du chant très gras de Duncan Bentley lorsque j’étais dans le line-up dehors, mais c’est à peu près tout. D’après quelques personnes avec qui j’ai parlé, ils étaient excellents, mais je ne peux malheureusement en témoigner personnellement. Je n’ai que moi à blâmer pour ça et je glisse ça dans ma liste d’erreurs à ne plus refaire.
Inferi
J’étais bien content d’avoir la chance de les voir en live, je trouve leurs compositions très intéressante, rapide et violentes. Ils livrent très bien la marchandise live. J’ai trouvé qu’ils tentaient peu d’animer la foule (aucune tornade humaine ne s’est formée), mais ils sont d’excellents musiciens et ils jouent leurs chansons à la perfection. Le chanteur Stevie Boiser maitrise diaboliquement les highs et ses cris de « ptérodactyle » m’ont provoqué plusieurs frissons. Il y avait une très bonne cohésion entre les membres du bandet semblaient avoir beaucoup de plaisir à jouer ensemble.
Entheos
J’ai adoré, ils ont carrément fait « décoller » le show. Je ne savais pas trop à quoi m’attendre, étant donné que leur band de base possède seulement un guitariste et que leur style de composition est assez unique : ils utilisent certains accords un peu hors norme dans le métal et beaucoup de contre-temps, je me demandais si ça allait fonctionner pour faire headbanger la foule. Que fut mon agréable surprise de voir qu’il y avait un 2ième guitariste pour ajouter du groove à leurs chansons. De plus, une constatation flagrante se déroulait devant mes yeux :Chaney Crabb est une maitresse de son art. Elle est la raison du pourquoi la foule a finalement commencé à se déchaîner et un mosh-pit afait son apparition. Elle se balançait la tête comme une possédée du démon et ça donnait le goût de l’imiter. Le son des instruments étant fort et bien pesant, ils ont ressorti du lot et causer la surprise, ce sentiment ayant aussi été partagé par d’autres métalleux qui assistaient au spectacle. Je les recommande, ils méritent d’être connus.
Archspire
Ils sont déjà dans une classe à part dans leur style : plus rapides que les autres d’un cran dans tous les instruments, mais surtout dans le chant où Oli Peters se démarque dans la scène tech avec un dégainage de syllabes ultra-rapide. Donc les attentes étaient hautes et ils n’ont pas déçu. Peut-être seulement dans la longévité de leur présence (au + 40 minutes), sinon musicalement malgré le nombre impressionnant de notes dans chaque chanson, tout était très clean.
Le chanteur est un excellent animateur de foule, narguant ses compatriotes entre les chansons et faisant rire l’audience. Le band a su continuer l’énergie amenée par Entheos et le mush n’a pas déchanté pendant leur présence. Mention spéciale au bassiste qui jouait superbement bien ses basslines complexes et le tout avait l’air facile. Ils étaient très agréables à voir jouer. Sans avoir pulvérisé les attentes, ils ont livré la marchandise haut la main!
Conclusion
Ce fut une superbe escapade dans la ville de Québec où j’ai demeuré pendant 7 ans. Et il était bien temps que je renoue avec le sentiment incroyable d’un bon vieux show de métal. Je n’aurais pas pu choisir un meilleur line-up! Pour ce qui est de la salle cependant, c’est petit, humide et bref très peu adapté aux besoins d’un tel spectacle. En contrepartie,le staffde La Source de la Martinière a sembléavoir fait le maximum avec ce qu’ils avaient.

Context
It’s been 6 years since my last metal show. I keep repeating this to myself as I can’t digest that I’ve been “abstinent” for that long. Last show I went was Parkway Drive, back in Australia in 2016, ending a 1 year long trip. It’s true that I changed career, went back to school and the pandemic happened, which didn’t help to attend shows. Add to this that I live an 8-hour drive from the closest city which metal bands come, all this explains that. But, now thriving in my career for3 years, it was time for me to get back to my most precious passion: going to metal shows. I chose my comeback well with 4 bands pretty well known on the scene.
Proof of what I say: the show is sold out. I tell myself that it doesn’t matter and me and my gal went to eat an awesome Poutine at the Cantine Chez Pierrot before the show. Fun fact, the waitress, seeing that I was wearing an Archspire cap, told me that the band came to eat at this very restaurant and left five minutes ago. So, we got at the venue at 7 p.m, thinking that there would be some local unknown start-up band. Instead, there were 50 people in front of me impatiently waiting to get inside and Vulvodynia’s setup was starting right up. My bad, I should have known better, but because of this circumstance and the slowness of people being admitted entry, I missed all of Vulvodynia, which killed it according to some folks I talked to later in the night. I sure was on the guest list, but my gal wasn’t and, well leaving her outside alone isn’t fit for my gentleman principles.
Once I finally entered, the first thing I noticedwasEntheos singer Chaney Crabb selling her stuff at the merch table. Having recently discovered the band, liking it and considering that I have a thing for female metal singers, I cannot help myself and went on my way to talk to her. It ended with buying 60 bucks of merch and a fist-bump from her after cheering her up for her set. At this time, I’m thrilled like a child and I start to prepare myself for upcoming band Inferi. Here’s my review of the night.
Vulvodynia
As I talked about earlier, I heard some of Duncan Bentley’s nasty lows through the sometimes-opening door while I was waiting outside, but that’s about all I can tell. Beginner’s mistake not to arrive in advance at a sold-out show. Lesson learned.
Inferi
I was very happy to have the chance to see them live. I find their compositions interesting, fast and violent. They are not the craziest crowdintertainers that I saw, but they play their songs perfectly clean. The singer Stevie Boiseris just awesomely talented and is a pleasure to see live, especially when he unleashes his pterodactylescream, it gives you mad chills.
Entheos
The surprise of the show. I didn’t know what to except from them really, I was in doubt a little bit for those reasons: they usually only useone guitarist and their songs is full of uncommon jazzy riffs and setbacks. I wasn’t sure how they would make the crowd headbang. They came on stage and things went crazy pretty fast! First of all, there was 2 guitarists, so the heaviness was on point and second, Chaney Crabbis a beast of a screamer and crowd entertainer. Before Entheosgot on stage, things were good but once they were there, a nice mush-pit took form and there was constant crowd surfing.Chaney was headbanging her hearon the front row and made people do the same. I was proud of wearing my new merch, they really did great!
Archspire
Now the headliners. This band is known for being over the top speedy with crazy technical riffs, including the singer who kind of mumble screams super fast, which makes them a style of their own. The expectations were high and were matched. A little deception nonetheless concerning their short stage presence (more or les 40 minutes) but musically they were insane to watch considering the crazy number of notes in each song. Everything was clean and on cue. Singer Oli Peterswas very good to make the crowd laugh between the songs by taunting other band members. They kind of took Entheos’ energy and surfed on it, the moshing and crowd-surfing carried on while they played their set. I must credit aspecial mentionto the bassist Jared Smith, who wasflashing his handsomeinstrumentto the front row while playing incredible basslines without evenlooking.main band Archspire nailed it and the whole show is a success!
Conclusion
This was a nice trip in the city of Quebec where I lived for 7 years. It was about time I feel this incredible feeling of attending a metal show. Couldn’t have a best line-up! The venue choice was not a score for me though. It was not fit for a sold-out show: it was small and humid. Cheer up to the staff of La Source de la Martinièrethough, it looked like they did a lot with what they had.
