Formé il y a 20 ans, le groupe letton SKYFORGER a fait paraître en avril un 7ème album, «Senprūsija» qui signifie «Old Prussia» en anglais et qui poursuit dans leur thème traditionnel qui raconte, dans leur langue natale, l’histoire ancienne des Baltiques. Vous pouvez trouver les paroles traduites en anglais sur leur site officiel.

Leur musique est cataloguée dans la catégorie folk/pagan mais ici, on ne tend pas vers Finntroll et autres Korpiklaani. En fait, bien que je sente la vibe folk dans le son par certains arrangements et naturellement par la présence de certains instruments traditionnels, c’est définitivement du côté old school blackened thrash que verse la musique.

Après «Ei skīja, skīja», une intro invocatoire d’une minute et demi entonnée dans une langue inconnue des traducteurs disponibles en ligne mais que j’imagine être du vieux prussien, on entre dans le vif du sujet avec «Senprūsija» et ses blast beats et riffs en tremolo qui mèneront vers un blackened thrash sauce old school. Avec l’arrivée du vocal, je n’ai pas pu m’empêcher de penser à Tony «Demolition Man» Dolan et sa façon de rouler les syllabes. Ici par contre, l’effet est sûrement augmenté par le fait que tout est chanté en letton, une langue qui présente une tonalité particulière à mon oreille.

Dès la première chanson, SKYFORGER présente les armes de son arsenal. Un blackened thrash sauce old school agrémenté ponctuellement par une ambiance folk courtoisie de la mélodie à la flûte et d’une portion épique lors du solo de guitare. Ces deux ingrédients seront dosés avec goût tout au long de l’album.

Avec «Sudāvu jātnieki», on continue dans le blackened thrash bien ficelé qui garde cette atmosphère épique. J’ai quasiment l’impression de visualiser la charge des cavaliers Sudovian. «Tagad vai nekad» débute pas mal comme la passe du refrain de «Peace sells» de Megadeth mais je leur pardonne parce que le build up que crée ce passage est parfaitement épique comme il l’est dans «Peace sells». Avec «Herkus Monte», c’est à l’aide des chœurs de chant que le côté épique ressort.

On navigue ainsi pour la première moitié d’album à travers des pièces rapides et puissantes aux consonances épiques qui dépeignent bien les images de guerre présentées au long des quatre chansons qui suit l’invocation de l’introduction.

La deuxième moitié amène une approche différente. Déjà dès le début de «Rāmava» qui ramène les chants invocatoires dans le style de «Ei skīja, skīja», on constate une sonorité différente des cordes et une rythmique death/doom qui marque une scission directe avec la première partie.

Les quatre pièces qui suivent bien qu’elles conservent les riffs en trémolo distinctifs, basculent vers une musique plus nostalgique et réflexive qui mêle bien le vieux melodic death et melodic black et incorpore plus d’éléments folk sans toutefois perdre la drive.

On ferme le deuxième bloc avec «Rituāls» qui est un interlude alors que la dernière chanson «Zem Lietuvas karogiem» nous ramène l’agression de la première moitié de l’album. SKYFORGER annonce dès lors que le combat ne sera jamais fini tant que le souvenir durera.

Si vous êtes de ceux qui, comme moi, aimez bien le côté black et thrash de Venom, Bathory et même Celtic Frost avec un côté épique à la Megadeth, SKYFORGER a concocté un album qui permet de s’y retrouver et sa musique permet autant de vivre l’intensité des champs de bataille que l’émotion de voir un peuple disparaître suite à la défaite et à la conquête.

Formed 20 years ago, the Latvian band SKYFORGER has released in April its 7th album, «Senprūsija» which means «Old Prussia» in English and pursue its traditional theme that tells, in its native language, stories from the ancient history of the Baltic. You can find the lyrics translated into English on its official website.

The music is classified as Folk/Pagan but here we do not tend towards Finntroll and Korpiklaani. In fact, although I feel the folk vibe in some arrangements and naturally by the presence of some traditional instruments, it is definitely Old School Blackened Thrash.

After «Ei skīja, skīja», an invocatory intro of a minute and a half sung in a language unknown to translators available online but that I imagine to be «Old Prussian», we enter the thick of things with title song «Senprūsija» and its blast beats and tremolo riffs that will lead to an Old School Blackened Thrash. With the arrival of the voice, I could not help but think of Tony «Demolition Man» Dolan and his way of rolling the syllables; the effect is certainly increased by the fact that everything is sung in Latvian, a language that has a particular tone in my ear.

From the first song, SKYFORGER shows the weapon from its arsenal: As I said, an Old School Blackened Thrash punctually complemented by a folk ambiance courtesy here of the melody on flute and with epic build-up around the guitar solo. These two ingredients are dosed with taste throughout the album.

«Sudāvu jātnieki» continues in well-crafted Blackened Thrash that keeps the epic atmosphere. I feel I can almost visualize the charge of the Sudovian horsemen. «Tagad vai nekad» starts a lot like the chorus part of Megadeth‘s «Peace sells» but I forgive them because the build up that creates this passage is perfectly epic as it is in «Peace sells». With «Herkus Monte» it is by using the choirs singing that the epic side is emphasized.

Thus sails the first half of the album through fast and powerful songs of epic proportions that depict very well the war images presented throughout the four songs following the invocation of the introduction.

The second half will take a different approach. Already from the beginning of «Rāmava» which brings back the invocatory vocals in the style of «Ei skīja, skīja», there is a different sound to the strings and the rythmic is Death/Doom which marks a direct split with the first part of the album.

The four songs that follow although they retain the distinctive tremolo riffs, fall over to a more nostalgic and reflective music that blends well the old Melodic Death and Melodic Black and incorporates more folk elements without losing the drive.

The second part of the album closes with «Rituals» which is an interlude before the last song «Zem Lietuvas karogiem» brings back the aggression of the first half of the album while SKYFORGER announces the fight is never over till the last memories die.

If you are one of those who, as me, like the Black and Thrash side of Venom, Bathory and Celtic Frost with some epic input à la Megadeth, SKYFORGER concocted an album that should get your attention as the music brings as much the intensity of battlefields than the feeling of loss and all emotions to see people disappear following defeat and conquest.
