Le groupe norvégien de noise/experimental rock ÅRABROT s’est formé en 2001 et a une discographie bien garnie. Je veux tout de suite mentionner que je ne connaissais pas du tout ÅRABROT et que la principale raison pour laquelle je vous parle de celui-ci est tout simplement parce qu’il a remporté le prix du meilleur album Metal aux Grammy Awards norvégien de 2012 pour l’album «Solar Anus» (2011). Qu’en est-il donc de cette musique qui gagne un Grammy en Norvège pour le meilleur album Metal alors qu’ici, nous n’avons même pas cette catégorie? Qu’en est-il donc de ce groupe qui gagne des awards mais n’a jamais été distribué en Amérique? Pour une première fois, grâce à sa signature avec Eolian Empire, le groupe a été rendu disponible de notre côté de l’océan avec «You Bunch of Idiots». Je crois qu’il est temps de voir ce qu’offre le EP.
Après s’être fait sermonné solidement dans «Cannibal Manifesto» un spoken word ironique qui nous remet à notre place dès le début (pensées nostalgiques pour certains speechs de Jello Biafra dont «Kinky sex makes the world go round»), la pièce «Time to pull the stick» lance les hostilités et j’espère que vous avez déjà compris que c’est le dernier des soucis du groupe si on apprécie ce qui se passe entre nos deux oreilles car après s’être bien raclé la gorge, Kjetil Nernes nous crache au visage «Ahh!! You bunch of idiots». C’est une pièce spypunk/noise rock un peu dans le genre des premiers albums de Butthole Surfers ou encore Agent Orange, mais avec un son à la Sex Pistols. Le vocal est parfaitement crasseux et pissed off.
Avec «Celebration», ça devient un peu plus creepy avec un rock doomisé. Quant à «Mea culpa», elle est comme à la limite entre Anti-Nowhere League et Iggy Pop mais joué par The Melvins.
Après l’interlude «…» de bruits vaguement industriel, on a droit à une marche funèbre qui fait autant penser à Marylin Manson dans ses moments sombres qu’à Bauhaus. Il y a aussi un côté David Bowie des débuts surtout côté vocal. L’apport des voix féminines finit de créer un chœur mélancolique portant nos pas vers la fin du EP.
«You Bunch Of Idiots», dernier EP d’une série de trois dont les deux précédents étaient «Murder As Art» et «I Modi», est, comme je le disais plus haut, sa première parution qui traverse l’Atlantique grâce à Eolian Empire. C’est un EP intéressant pour les découvrir car il offre des pièces à l’enveloppe rock bien noisey. J’ai hâte de voir si la droite chrétienne nord-américaine permettra que la pochette soit bien en vue sur les tablettes du Walmart et autres Target…

The Norwegian noise/experimental rock band ÅRABROT was formed in 2001 and has a well-stocked discography. I want to mention right away that I did not know at all ÅRABROT before listening to this EP and the main reason why I talk of this band is simply because it won the Best Metal Album award at the Norwegian Grammys in 2012 for the album «Solar Anus» (2011). What kind of music wins a Grammy in Norway for best Metal album when here we do not even have this category? What of a band that wins awards in Norway but has never been released in America? Well, for the first time, thanks to its signature with Eolian Empire, the band was made available on this side of the ocean with «You Bunch of Idiots». I think it is time to see what offers the EP.
After being scolded firmly in «Cannibal Manifesto», an ironic spoken word (some nostalgic thoughts here for Jello Biafra’s spoken words including «Kinky Sex Makes the world go round»), the song «Time to pull the stick» launches hostilities and I hope that you have already realized that this is the last concern of the band if we appreciate what is going on between our ears as Kjetil Nernes cleared his throat and spit at our face «Ahh !! You bunch of idiots». It is a Spypunk/Noise Rock song a bit like the first Butthole Surfers albums or Agent Orange, but with the sound of the Sex Pistols. The vocal is perfectly filthy and pissed off.
With «Celebration», it becomes a little creepy with a doomy rock. «Mea culpa» sounds at the boundary between Anti-Nowhere League and Iggy Pop but played by The Melvins.
After the interlude « … » vaguely Industrial/Noise, last song, «It’s Hot Drop It», is a funeral march which reminded me of Marilyn Manson‘s darkest moments or even Bauhaus. There is also some David Bowie colors in there especially in the vocal. The contribution of female choirs eventually create a melancholy chorus walking us out towards the end of the EP.
«You Bunch Of Idiots» is the latest EP in a serie of three – the previous two were «Murder As Art» and «I Modi» – and is , as I said above, its first that crosses the Atlantic through Eolian Empire. It is an interesting EP to discover the band as it offers accessible rock songs in a noisy envelope. I’m curious to hear what the North American Christian rightwing will say when the cover will be prominent on the shelves of Walmart and other Target…
