Moins d’un an et demi après nous avoir pondu l’excellent et premier album «Global Citizen», le groupe de pop punk/ska THE CARDBOARD CROWNS nous revient en force avec son deuxième opus «Hold On». Dès la première écoute, on y retrouve tous les éléments qu’on avait aimés du premier album: chansons variées dans le style et dans l’intensité. Les gars du groupe ont conservé leur recette gagnante, c’est-à-dire des mélodies accrocheuses et des arrangements simples, mais efficaces.
Côté production, je me serais attendu à une coche de plus étant donné que c’est un deuxième album. J’aurais préféré avoir un peu plus de finition sur les détails, en particuliers sur le synchronisme des différents vocaux. Peut-être que c’était voulu ainsi aussi, ce n’est pas si grave dans le fond, quand tu as des bonnes chansons, c’est bon peu importe la façon dont c’est rendu, et c’est ça qui compte. Je n’ai pas (encore) vu le groupe en live, mais une chose est sûre, ça doit être le fun en (insérez votre juron préféré!) Ce sera un rendez-vous pour moi la prochaine fois qu’ils viennent à Québec!

Less than a year and a half after releasing their debut album «Global Citizen», the guys from THE CARDBOARD CROWNS strike again with their second album «Hold On». Straight from the first listen, you’ll recognize all of the elements that made their first album so great: a lot of diversity in the style and intensity of the songs. You don’t change a good formula when you have one: melodies with great hooks and simple but effective arrangements.
I expected the production of the album to be a bit better, since it is their second. I found that the vocals could have been a bit better synchronized when two or more people are singing. Maybe it was deliberate, to get more of a «live feeling». It’s not that important. When you have great songs, they will be good no matter how they are rendered. I have yet to see the band live, I heard that they pack a great punch on stage. It is a must for me next time they come to Quebec City!
