Pour continuer dans la même veine que ma revue d’album précédente alors que je vous ai parlé du dernier Arcturus (voici le lien si ma revue d’Arcturus vous intéresse), je vais aborder une autre critique à propos d’un groupe qui aura également pris près d’une décennie avant de nous présenter un nouvel album. Tous les grands amateurs de death metal reconnaissent que ce groupe a en quelque sorte marqué non seulement la scène au niveau local dans l’État de New-York mais aussi la scène internationale. Je ne parle pas de Suffocation mais bien de Skinless, un groupe de death metal new-yorkais composé de cinq membres dont un chanteur, deux guitaristes, un bassiste et un joueur de batterie. D’ailleurs, plusieurs d’entre eux font partie du line up dit «classique» de la fin des années 1990 réunis de nouveau en 2013 et auquel s’est rajouté un second guitariste depuis. Cette année, le groupe nous revient avec son cinquième album, contenant sept nouvelles chansons, intitulé «Only The Ruthless Remain» sorti par le label Relapse Records. Voyons ce que le groupe a à nous offrir…
Musicalement, le groupe n’a pas changé sa formule, c’est-à-dire un death metal brutal, efficace et simple. Mais parfois, je l’ai trouvé peu inspiré. Il n’y a rien d’extraordinaire dans ce que le groupe a fait sur cet album et les riffs manquaient parfois d’originalité puisque plusieurs riffs sont très similaires à ce que des centaines d’autres groupes du même genre ont fait. Mais n’empêche que j’ai pas mal bougé la tête pendant mes nombreuses écoutes et que si on recherche un album de death metal brutal simple et efficace, cet album a de quoi pour satisfaire n’importe quel fan du genre. «Only The Ruthless Remain» propose une formule qui, quoique différente de leurs albums précédents, présente quand même des similarités avec ceux-ci et surtout n’amène pas d’innovations. Elle a de quoi pour plaire aux puristes, mais pour les gens qui espéraient quelque chose de nouveau, ils trouveront que c’est pas mal standard. Je dirais que les pièces «Skinless» et «Flamethrower» sont celles qui sortent le plus du lot.
Au niveau du vocal, je l’ai trouvé un peu ennuyant. Je ne sais pas si c’est à cause du mixage, mais je n’ai pas ressenti assez d’agressivité dans sa voix, la trouvant aussi un peu trop redondante et j’ai trouvé que ça manquait de puissance en général.
Ensuite, pour la production, dans son ensemble, ce n’est pas à ça que je m’attendais. J’avais anticipé une production plus «old school» en gardant le côté brutal d’une bonne qualité, mais ce n’est pas tout à fait le cas. Le son de la batterie pourrait être mieux, on dirait que le son alloué pour la voix est un peu saccagé et se fait enterrer par les guitares. À quelques moments, j’ai trouvé que les guitares prenaient trop de place sur la production en enterrant les autres membres du groupe. Pour finir, je trouve que la qualité variait tout au long de l’album, et ce, dans plusieurs chansons. C’est surtout cet élément qui a fait en sorte que ma première écoute a été un peu désagréable. Heureusement que les écoutes suivantes ont été beaucoup mieux.
En conclusion, Skinless offre un peu plus de trente-cinq minutes de death metal brutal, efficace et simple, sans toutefois réinventer la façon de faire un bon album de death metal. Pas un retour grandiose, mais ça reste un bon retour tout de même puisque le groupe a gardé tous les bons éléments d’un bon album de death metal. Je ne regrette pas d’avoir acheté leur album en version vinyl avec l’édition «couleur lave de volcan», mais d’après moi, si le groupe avait travaillé plus sur leur nouvel album, il aurait produit un album beaucoup mieux. En espérant entendre quelque chose de mieux la prochaine fois et que le groupe n’hésitera pas à faire patienter leurs fans pour leur donner un produit de meilleure qualité.

To continue in the same vein as my previous album review about Arcturus (here’s the link to my Arcturus‘ review), I will address another review about a band that has also taken nearly a decade before presenting a new album. All major death metal fans recognize that this band has somehow left its mark not only on the local New York State scene but also internationally. I’m not talking about Suffocation but about Skinless, a group of death metal from New York composed of five members, one singer, two guitarists, a bassist and a drum player. Moreover, several of them were part of the line up said «classic» of the late 1990s reformed in 2013 and to which has since been added a second guitarist. This year the band is back with their fifth album, containing seven new songs, titled «Only The Ruthless Remain» released by Relapse Records. Let’s see what the band has to offer …
Musically, the band has not changed its formula, that is to say, a brutal death metal efficient and simple. But sometimes I found it uninspired. There is nothing out of the ordinary in what the band has done on this album and riffs sometimes lacked originality because many riffs are very similar to those that hundreds of other similar bands did. But still I did headbang a lot during my many listenings and if one seeks an album of simple and effective brutal death metal, this album has something to satisfy any fan of the genre. «Only The Ruthless Remain» offers a formula which, though different from their previous albums, still presents similarities and do not lead to innovations. It has something to please the purists of the genre, but for those who expected something new, they will find that this is pretty standard. I would say the songs «Skinless» and «Flamethrower» are those that stand out the most.
On the vocal side, I found it a bit boring. I do not know if it’s because of the mix, but I have not felt enough aggressivity in his voice, found it a little too redundant and thought that it lacked power overall.
Then, for the production as a whole, it is not what I expected. I had anticipated a production more old school though keeping a good quality but on the brutal side. It’s not quite the case. The sound of drums could be better; it seems that the sound allocated for the vocals somewhat vandalized and furthrmore it is buried undr the guitars. A few times, I thought that the guitars were taking too much space on the production burying the other instruments of the band. Finally, I think the quality varied throughout the album, and this in several songs. This is especially what made my first listening a little unpleasant. Fortunately, it got better as I kept listening to it.
In conclusion, Skinless offers a little bit more than thirty- five minutes of brutal death metal, efficient and simple, without reinventing the way to do a good death metal album. Not a great return, but still a good one anyway because the band kept all the good elements of a good death metal album. I do not regret I bought the «volcano lava color» vinyl edition of the album but in my opinion, if the band had worked differently on their new album, it would have produced a much better album. I hope to hear something better as a whole next time and that the band will not hesitate to leave their fans waiting in order to give them a better quality product .
