Originaire de Drôme dans le sud-est de la France, le trio de Black Metal KOSMOS nous présente cette année son troisième album limité à une centaine de copies sur disque compact. Sur ce troisième opus, la formation poursuit son évolution vers une forme plus progressive de Black Metal se distinguant du lot par un côté mélodique très bien développé et assumé avec les duels de guitares de Nekros (guitares, basse, chant) entrecoupés de passages plus chaotiques et dissonants dénotant une certaine influence Death Metal. La batterie puissante, technique et variée de Sorthei (Dépérir, Pavillon Rouge, Ex-Daedalion, Ex-Inferi Gloria) est aussi un point fort de l’album. Le tout est complété par un échantillonnage éthéré de la part de xOv qui contribue à donner à l’œuvre son caractère spatial ou céleste. Seule ombre au tableau, la production bien que très léchée souffre d’un excès de compression qui assourdi un peu trop la musique du groupe qui aurait bénéficié de plus d’expansion. C’est un peu comme si on écoutait la musique à travers un oreiller, notamment en ce qui concerne les guitares. Toutefois, les fanatiques de Black Metal habitués à beaucoup plus de crasse ne devraient pas être arrêtés par cet inconvénient somme toute mineur.

Originally from Drôme in the southeast of France, the Black Metal trio KOSMOS presents this year its third album limited to a hundred copies on CD. On this third installment, the band continues to evolve towards a more progressive form of Black Metal, differing from the pack with its very well developed melodic side served with dueling guitars courtesy of Nekros (guitars, bass, vocals) interspersed with more chaotic and dissonant riffages exposing some Death Metal influences. Sorthei (Dépérir, Pavillon Rouge, Former Daedalion, Former Inferi Gloria) powerful, technical and varied drumming is also a strong point of the album. This is complemented by an ethereal sampling from xOv which helps to give the work its space or celestial nature.
The only downside is the production. Although very licked, it suffers from excessive compression that muffles a little too much the music which would have benefited from more expansion. It is a bit like listening to music through a pillow, especially regarding the guitars. However, Black Metal fanatics accustomed to a more dirty sound should not be stopped by this problem, altogether minor.
