ENTHEAN est un groupe de Greenville, en Caroline du Sud, USA dont la musique offre une combinaison surprenante. Il joue un mélange de Black Metal, de Death Metal technique et même de blues, sans oublier un côté symphonique à cause des orchestrations. Tout un cocktail musical! Le groupe est composé de quatre membres: deux chanteurs/guitaristes, un bassiste et un batteur. Indépendant comme un jeune adulte qui quitte le foyer de ses parents, le groupe a agi, depuis sa création en 2012, de façon indépendante et a fait deux sorties: un démo en 2013 et son premier album en 2016. La critique que vous lisez va se porter évidemment sur leur premier album intitulé «Priests Of Annihilation». Voyons voir ce que je pense de leur premier album…
Musicalement, le groupe fait donc comme je l’ai mentionné en introduction, un mélange de Black Metal, Death Metal technique et de… blues, que l’on entend très bien dans les deux dernières pièces de l’album. J’avoue que le groupe m’a surpris avec ses compositions travaillées et que l’intégration de plusieurs genres musicaux peut s’avérer être difficile quoique ici les enchainements des genres du groupe sont très réussis. Pour les gens qui me connaissent bien, disons que je suis assez difficile quand on parle de Death Metal technique. Je suis d’ailleurs très sélectif quand il est temps d’acheter un album d’un groupe de ce genre. À titre d’exemple, je n’ai jamais pu aimer le groupe Brain Drill que je considère extrêmement trop répétitif, surtout lorsqu’il se lance à jouer quelque chose de technique. Heureusement que ce n’est pas le cas d’ENTHEAN qui offre quelque chose d’unique et varié sans que ça me tombe sur les nerfs une seule fois. Même que je trouve parfois les pièces entrainantes. Sans oublier les orchestrations qui sont magnifiques, variées et extrêmement bien travaillées rajoutant un petit quelque chose d’intéressant à la musique du groupe.
En ce qui concerne les voix, je n’ai pas grand-chose à dire. Je ne sous-entends pas que c’est mauvais, mais juste que c’est du déjà-entendu. D’autant plus que ça me fait penser au vocal principal du groupe italien Fleshgod Apocalypse.
Pour terminer, j’ai trouvé que la production générale de l’album est d’une très haute qualité, surtout étant donné qu’il s’agit d’un produit indépendant. Aucun instrument n’embarque davantage sur les autres puisqu’on assiste à un équilibre rarement vu sur un album d’un groupe indépendant. On entend parfaitement tout le monde et les transitions entre les différents genres musicaux sont très bien faits sans perdre la qualité sonore.
En conclusion, «Priests Of Annihilation» est un premier album sensationnel par ENTHEAN. Leur cocktail musical est une très grande réussite et a su dissiper assez rapidement mes craintes par rapport à ce mélange. Leur premier album pourrait vous intéresser si jamais vous aimez le groupe Fleshgod Apocalypse, mais à un niveau musical plus travaillé et varié. Même si l’année est très loin d’être terminée, cet album va définitivement se battre pour une place dans mon top 20 des meilleurs albums de l’année 2016. Je vous encourage donc à acheter le format digital ou une copie physique de leur album directement sur leur bandcamp.

ENTHEAN is a group of Greenville, South Carolina, USA that offers a surprising combination of style in their music. The band plays a mixture of Black Metal, Technical Death Metal and even Blues, with a symphonic touch brought by orchestrations. What a musical cocktail! The group consists of four members: two vocalists /guitarists, a bassist and a drummer. Independent as a young adult who left the nest, the group has acted independently since its creation in 2012 and had two releases: a demo in 2013 and its first album in 2016. This text is about their first album entitled «Priests of Annihilation». Let’s see what I think of its debut album…
Musically, as I mentioned in the introduction, the band present a mixture of Black Metal, Technical Death Metal and… blues, particularly noticeable in the last two songs of the album. I admit that the band surprised me with its well crafted compositions because I know that the integration of several musical genres can prove to be difficult but here though the blend of styles is very successful. Those who know me well can say I am pretty picky when it comes to technical Death Metal. I am very selective when it’s time to buy an album. For example, I could never like Brain Drill that I consider extremely too repetitive, especially in the technical parts of the songs. Fortunately this is not the case with ENTHEAN that offers something unique and varied without losing me along the way. There is even some catchy parts. I must also mention the orchestrations that are beautiful, varied and worked extremely well, adding this little something interesting to the group’s music.
Regarding the vocal, I don’t have much to say. I’m not implying that it’s bad, just that it’s already heard. It reminds me of the main vocal of the Italian group Fleshgod Apocalypse.
Finally, the overall production of the album is of very high quality, which is to be noted given that this is an independent product, reaching a balance rarely heard on an album from an independent group. Every instrument is well present in the mix and transitions between different musical genres are very well made without losing the sound quality.
In conclusion, «Priests Of Annihilation» is a sensational first album. Their musical cocktail is a great success and was able to quickly dispel my fears regarding this kind of mixture. Their first album might interest you if you like bands like Fleshgod Apocalypse, but with a little bit more variety. Although the year is far from over, this album will definitely fight for a spot in my top 20 list of best albums of 2016. I encourage you to buy the digital format or a physical copy of their album directly on their bandcamp.
