La première pensée qui m’a traversé l’esprit après la première écoute du beaucoup trop long album «The Astonishing» fut: Une maudite chance que je n’ai pas payé près de 100$ pour aller les voir au Capitole de Québec performer cet album en entier le 14 avril prochain!
Sérieusement, le plus récent effort de DREAM THEATER, l’ambitieux «The Astonishing» est tellement massif que je ne sais pas par où commencer… Mais essayons quand même! Avant de commencer, je dois toutefois déclarer ceci: J’ai volontairement attendu un bon bout de temps avant de publier cette critique, pour me laisser un bon mois pour digérer cet album.
L’album est d’abord et avant tout beaucoup trop long, faisant près de 130 minutes (!!!). Si au moins la moitié de l’album avait été du niveau de qualité auquel le groupe nous a habitués, au moins on aurait eu plus d’une heure de bon stock, le reste étant un peu comme du bonus (dans le même style que le dernier album d’Iron Maiden, qui aurait pu facilement rentrer sur un seul disque s’ils avaient fait preuve d’un peu plus d’auto-critique). Les deux chansons qui ont été sorties en single avant la date de parution («The Gift of Music» et «Moment of Betrayal») figurent parmi les meilleures chansons de l’album. «Dystopian Overture», «Three Days» et «A New Beginning» en font également partie.
L’album est peut-être un peu trop ambitieux pour rien. C’est comme si les gars de DREAM THEATER cherchaient des challenges là où il n’y en a pas. Ils tirent dans toutes les directions, en essayant d’abord d’intégrer plusieurs styles musicaux dans les chansons. James Labrie qui «essaye» de faire les différents personnages avec sa voix, ça ne «fitte» pas vraiment… À force de trop vouloir faire différent pour faire différent, ça peut nous péter en pleine face… Ayreon est le maître du rock opéra, est-ce qu’on peut lui laisser svp! Et que dire du visuel cheap (personnages, carte, histoire) digne des jeux vidéo de la fin des années 1990. On dirait «Command and Conquer» ou «Red Alert»!
Je sais que le débat est éternel et que le sujet a été usé à la corde, mais l’absence de Mike Portnoy se fait cruellement sentir sur cet album, sur tous les aspects. Ça avait commencé avec l’album éponyme (ça n’avait pas vraiment eu le temps de paraître sur «A Dramatic Turn of Events»), et ça nous pète en pleine face sur «The Astonishing». Je sais qu’on est tous d’accord que techniquement, Mangini plante Portnoy une main dans le dos, mais pour le reste, le feeling, la vision, la direction, ouf…
Et les comparaisons avec l’album «Scenes From a Memory», ok on va arrêter ça tout de suite? «Scenes From a Memory» avait une histoire intéressante, avec un bon équilibre entre narration et extrapolation. Musicalement, c’était bien sûr un chef d’œuvre, chacune des chansons avait sa raison d’être et sa propre énergie. Il y avait une bonne cohésion et l’album formait un tout. Sur «The Astonishing», une bonne partie des chansons se ressemble et il n’y a pas beaucoup de liens à faire avec la musique et les paroles… L’histoire est tellement mauvaise, tellement cheap, tellement cliché… ouf!
Autres points en rafale:
– Production: Très ordinaire, pour ne pas dire merdique, en particulier pour la batterie.
– Performance: Assez déçu de la performance de Mike Mangini. Trop mécanique, pas de moments «wow» ou mémorables. C’est probablement l’album avec le moins de clavier de tout le catalogue de DREAM THEATER.
– Autant «Dystopian Overture» fait très bien sa job, autant la dernière «The Astonishing» tombe à plat.
– Il y a une chanson qui s’appelle «The X Aspect». Pourquoi pas «The X Factor» tant qu’à y être? 😉
Les gars de DREAM THEATER sont un peu les Jaromir Jagr du métal progressif. Ils sont encore très bons pour leur âge et ont encore leur place dans la ligue. Sauf que, contrairement à Jaromir Jagr qui demande un salaire beaucoup moins élevé que dans ses belles années, les prix des albums et surtout des billets pour voir Dream Theater live ne baissent pas, eux. Peut-être que présenté en intégralité live, l’album peut prendre plus de sens, ce sera à voir… (pas pour moi, en tout cas!).
Sur chacun des albums de DREAM THEATER, il y a toujours eu des chansons qui sortaient du lot, qui nous faisaient dire «wow!» et que même 5 ou 10 ans plus tard, on est content de réécouter. On dirait qu’ici, ils sont tombés dans le piège de l’album générique ou qu’ils ont trop essayé de faire fitter la musique à l’histoire. Je ne sais pas pour vous, mais l’appréciation d’un album pour moi passe à 99% par la musique.
Cet album me laisse un léger goût amer. Je le mettrais même dans le top trois des pires albums de DREAM THEATER, avec «When Dream and Day Unite» et «Falling Into Infinity». Il faut qu’on se comprenne bien: Cet album est probablement meilleur que ce que bien des groupes pourront produire dans leur carrière entière, mais pour DREAM THEATER, le standard de qualité n’est pas au rendez-vous. Probablement qu’avec le temps j’en viendrai à apprécier un peu plus l’album, j’ai souvent tendance à être trop sévère. Mais pour l’instant, avec tout le hype et le potentiel qu’il y avait autour de cet album, j’en suis quand même déçu… À quand une comédie musicale signée DREAM THEATER rendu là? Au moment d’écrire ces lignes, la nouvelle du jeu vidéo n’était pas encore sortie… Parce que oui, il va y avoir un jeu vidéo «The Astonishing»! Ça ne s’invente pas!

J’ai mal à mon DREAM THEATER

The first thought that crossed my mind after I listened for the first time to the too long album «The Astonishing» by DREAM THEATER was: I’m damned lucky I did not pay close to $100 to see them perform this album in full at the Capitole de Québec this coming April 14th!
Seriously, the most recent effort by DREAM THEATER, the ambitious «The Astonishing» is so massive that I do not know where to start if I’m to talk about it… but let’s start anyway! Before I begin, I must however say this: I deliberately waited a long time before publishing this review, I had to allow the album a full month to sink in.
The album is first and foremost far too long, clocking at nearly 130 minutes (!!!). If at least half of it was at the level of quality that the group has accustomed us, we would then have more than an hour of good stock, the remainder falling in the category of bonus and extras (in the same style as the last Iron Maiden‘s album that could easily fit on one disc had they shown a little more self-criticism). The two singles released before the album («The Gift of Music» and «Moment of Betrayal») are among the best songs of the album. «Dystopian Overture», «Three Days» and «A New Beginning» complete the top 5.
The album is perhaps a bit too ambitious for nothing. It is like if the guys from DREAM THEATER were looking for challenges where there is none. They shoot in all directions, first by trying to integrate several musical styles in the songs. Secondly, James Labrie trying to do different characters with his voice did not convince me … By dint of trying too hard to be different for the sake of being different, it can blow up in someone’s own face … Ayreon is the master of Rock Opera, is it possible to remember it please! And what’s the point with the cheap visual complement to the album (characters, map, history) worthy of video games from the late 1990s like «Command and Conquer» or «Red Alert»!
I know the debate will be eternal and that the subject has been overtalked about, but this album reveals the full impact of the absence of Mike Portnoy, on all aspects. It started with the eponymous album (it did not really have time to appear on «A Dramatic Turn of Events»), but it is all over on «The Astonishing». I know we all agree that technically Mangini beats Portnoy with an arm tied in the back, but for the rest, the feeling, the vision, direction, phew…
Talking about comparisons, can we stop immediately to compare it with the album «Scenes From a Memory»? «Scenes From a Memory» was an interesting story, with a good balance between narrative and extrapolation. Musically, it was of course a masterpiece where each song had its reason for being and its own energy. There was a good cohesion and it gave more than the some of its parts as a whole album. On «The Astonishing», many songs are alike and there is not a strong link between music and lyrics… The story is so bad, so cheap, so cliché… phew!
Other random thoughts:
– Production: Very ordinary, not to say crappy, especially for the drum.
– Performance: I’m pretty disappointed with the performance of Mike Mangini. It’s too mechanical, no «wow» or memorable moments. This is probably the album with the less keyboard of the entire DREAM THEATER‘s catalog.
– As much «Dystopian Overture» does its job very well, «The Astonishing» falls flat to close the album.
– There is a song called «The X Aspect». Why not «The X Factor» for that matter?
The guys from DREAM THEATER are a bit like the Jaromir Jagr of progressive metal. They are still very good for their age and still have their place in the league. Except that unlike Jaromir Jagr who demand a salary much lower than in its heyday, the price for albums and especially tickets to see DREAM THEATER live are not getting cheaper. Maybe presented live in full, the album could make more sense, it remains to be heard and seen… (not for me, anyway!).
On each album DREAM THEATER have always crafted songs that stood out of the lot, that made us say «wow!» and that, even 5 or 10 years later, we are happy to listen to. Here it will not be the case as it sounds like they have fallen into the trap of generic album trying to do too much to fit music and history. I do not know about you, but for me I enjoy an album 99% through music.
This album gives me a slight bitter taste. I even put it in the top three of the worst albums of DREAM THEATER, with «When Dream and Day Unite» and «Falling Into Infinity». I need to be precise though: This album is probably better than what many groups can produce in their entire career, but for DREAM THEATER, the standard of quality is not at the rendezvous! Probably with time, I will come to appreciate the album a little more, I often tend to be too severe. But for now, with all the hype and potential that there was around this album, I’m still disappointed… When does a musical comedy by DREAM THEATER is scheduled? At the time of this writing, the new video game was not yet out… Because yes, there will be «The Astonishing», the video game! Do you think I would joke about this…!
