Même si ce groupe n’a aucunement besoin de présentation, je tiens tout de même à le faire pour les âmes qui ne le connaissent pas. DARKTHRONE est un groupe de la Norvège qui a exploré plusieurs genres dans le métal. Si leur premier album, intitulé «Soulside Journey», était un album de Death Metal, il n’a pas fallu attendre des années pour que le groupe se démarque lors de sa période Black Metal. D’ailleurs, DARKTHRONE est encore considéré comme étant l’un des groupes les plus emblématiques du Black Metal norvégien des années 90. C’est aux alentours du milieu des années 2000 que le groupe prit un virage plus axé sur le Crust/Punk et qui s’est tranquillement pas vite dirigé dans du Heavy Metal et du Speed Metal, dont «The Underground Resistance» a montré les couleurs de ces genres pour visiblement rendre hommage à des groupes comme King Diamond/Mercyful Fate, Celtic Frost, Bathory et Venom. Quatre groupes qui sont considérés comme la première vague du Black Metal et qui ont été des influences majeures pour les groupes cultes que nous connaissons aujourd’hui. DARKTHRONE est l’un des groupes les plus respectés de la scène Metal encore de nos jours.
À mon plus grand plaisir, après 3 ans d’absence, DARKTHRONE a décidé de sortir un nouvel album, intitulé «Arctic Thunder» avec huit nouvelles pièces. Si «The Underground Resistance» a été un de mes albums préférés en 2013, il était clair que j’avais de grandes attentes envers ce nouvel album. J’étais surtout curieux d’entendre vers où le groupe allait emporter son auditoire. Voyons ce que je pense du nouvel album…
Dès le départ, le groupe donne exactement le ton de l’album. C’est un retour aux sources de leurs premières années dans le Black Metal. Pour les fans de cette époque, vous allez être gâtés parce que c’est, à mon avis, dans la même veine que «Panzerfaust», et également semblable à «The Cult Is Alive», paru dans le milieu des années 2000. C’est lent, sombre, froid, mais surtout, c’est grim! Malgré ce retour aux sources de leur période Black Metal des années 90, on ne peut nier que le groupe est tout de même resté fidèle au Heavy Metal que le groupe nous a dévoilé lors de l’album précédent celui-ci. Il y a d’autres chansons où c’est beaucoup plus rapide. On peut facilement remarquer que les compositions de DARKTHRONE sont très simples sur cet album et c’est tant mieux pour une raison: pas toujours besoin de faire quelque chose de technique pour faire de la bonne musique.
En ce qui concerne le vocal, la seule chose que j’ai trouvé vraiment dommage, c’est que Fenriz ne chante aucune chanson de l’album contrairement au précédent. Si la chanson «Leave No Cross Unturned» de «The Underground Resistance», où il prend le micro, est l’une de mes chansons préférées de DARKTHRONE, j’anticipais l’entendre encore une fois sur au moins une des pièces d’«Arctic Thunder». N’empêche que Nocturno Culto fait encore une fois un travail remarquable derrière le micro. Pour la production, je n’ai pas grand-chose à dire. Fidèle à eux-mêmes, le groupe offre une très bonne production où on entend très bien les instruments et le vocal sans qu’il y ait des défauts révélateurs ou dérangeants.
En général, j’aime bien la majorité des chansons, mais deux chansons m’ont fait un peu plus décrocher malgré certains éléments intéressants. La partie la plus drôle se déroule dans les dernières secondes de l’album, moment où Fenriz s’en donne à cœur-joie à chanter quelques paroles de «Broken Wings» de Mister Mister. J’avoue que je ne savais pas c’était quoi, mais c’est en faisant des recherches que j’ai découvert d’où ça venait cette réplique. Est-ce que c’était voulu ou non? On s’en fout, les gars ont le droit de s’amuser. Si j’ai à nommer les trois chansons qui m’ont le plus plu, ça serait, dans l’ordre, «Arctic Thunder», «Tundra Leech» et «Burial Bliss».
En conclusion, «Arctic Thunder» est un très bon album qui marque à la fois un retour aux sources, au début de son ère Black Metal, mais qui en même temps garde un peu la même direction que le groupe a entreprise lors de l’album précédent, «The Underground Resistance». DARKTHRONE a beau avoir été simpliste sur cet album, le groupe a tout de même prouvé qu’on n’a pas besoin de faire quelque chose de technique pour que ça soit bon et qu’on bouge la tête. Sans être l’album de l’année, DARKTHRONE offre encore une fois un album d’une qualité remarquable et authentifiée à leur manière. Although this group needs no presentation, I would like to do it for the poor souls who do not know it. DARKTHRONE is a group from Norway who explored several genres in Metal. If its first album, entitled «Soulside Journey», was a Death Metal album, in a few years the group made a real mark during its Black Metal period. Besides, DARKTHRONE is still regarded as one of the most emblematic Norwegian Black Metal group of the 90s. It was around the mid-2000s that the group focused more on Crust/Punk and then switched towards Heavy Metal and Speed Metal, as «the Underground Resistance» visibly honor bands like King Diamond/Mercyful Fate, Celtic Frost, Bathory and Venom, four groups that are considered the first wave of Black Metal and have been major influences for cult bands we know today. DARKTHRONE is still one of the most respected groups of the Metal scene even today.
To my delight, after 3 years of absence, DARKTHRONE decided to release a new album, «Arctic Thunder» with eight new songs. If «The Underground Resistance» was one of my favorite albums in 2013, it was clear that I had high expectations for this new release. I was especially curious to hear where the band would take its audience. Let’s see what I think of the new album…
From the start, the group gives exactly the tone of the album. This is a return to their early years in Black Metal. For fans of that time, you should appreciate because it is, in my opinion, in the same vein as «Panzerfaust», and also similar to «The Cult Is Alive» released in the mid-2000s. It is slow, dark, cold, but above all, it is grim! Despite this return to their Black Metal period of the 90s, there is no denying that the group still remained faithful to the Heavy Metal brought forth in the previous album. There are other songs where it is much faster. One can easily notice that the compositions are very simple on this album and that shows one thing: no need to do something technical to make good music.
Regarding the vocal, the only thing that I found really unfortunate is that Fenriz do not sing on the album unlike the previous one. If the song «Leave No Cross Unturned» from «The Underground Resistance» where Fenriz takes the microphone, is one of my favorite songs of DARKTHRONE, I anticipated to hear him again on at least one of the songs of «Arctic Thunder». Nevertheless, Nocturno Culto is once again doing a great job behind the microphone.
I have not much to say concerning the production. True to themselves, the group offers a very good production where all the instruments and the voice are well balanced without revealing any defects.
In general, I like the majority of the songs, but two songs failed to grab my attention despite some interesting elements. The funniest part is set in the final seconds of the album, when Fenriz put all his heart in singing a few words from «Broken Wings» by Mister Mister. I confess I did not know what it was, but I did some researches to find out where it came from. Was it intended to provoke this effect? Who cares!! The guys have the right to have fun. If I have to name my best three of the album, it would be in order, «Arctic Thunder», «Tundra Leech» and «Burial Bliss».
In conclusion, «Arctic Thunder» is a very good album that marks a comeback to its early Black Metal era, but at the same time keeps walking the path laid in the previous album, «The Underground Resistance». Though DARKTHRONE presents simple compositions on this album, the group nevertheless proves it is not necessary to do anything technical to be good and stimulate headbanging all over. Without being the album of the year, DARKTHRONE again offers an album of remarkable quality undoubtedly bearing their mark.
