J’ai toujours trouvé intéressant de savoir comment on finit par connaître un groupe et comment on finit par apprécier un genre de musique. Les raisons sont multiples sur la manière qu’on découvre un groupe ou un genre de musique. Pour certains de mes lecteurs, cette information sera inutile, mais pour d’autres, je l’espère, intéressante: ma première rencontre avec le metal extrême québécois, c’était avec CRYPTOPSY grâce à leur album live intitulé «None So Live» qui a été enregistré au défunt Medley en juin 2002. Je me rappelle avoir acheté cet album parce que le concert avait été enregistré à Montréal, mais j’ignorais jusqu’à ma première écoute que j’entendais un groupe québécois.
Après cette brève intrusion, pour revenir à cette critique, je me suis intéressé à leur tout nouveau EP sorti récemment et disponible sur leur bandcamp, intitulé «The Book Of Suffering – Tome 1». Voyons à quoi on peut s’attendre.
Bien que ça soit un EP, j’ai trouvé que les 17 minutes ont passé trop vite. Je voulais en entendre davantage ce qui n’arrivera pas avant la sortie du deuxième tome. Peut-être que c’est moi, mais j’ai également trouvé que toutes les chansons finissaient de façon abrupte et sèche comme si je m’attendais à ce qu’il y en ait plus. Sinon, j’ai trouvé les compositions très intéressantes et j’ai apprécié le fait que tous les musiciens avaient leur place dans la musique.
«Détritus», avec son intro, est une excellente pièce pour commencer un EP, voire même éventuellement un album, et donne aussitôt le ton pour le reste de l’écoute. La chanson «The Knife, The Head And What Remains» est, je trouve, la chanson qui se démarque le plus parce qu’elle correspond exactement à ce qu’on adore du groupe. Je ne me tanne pas d’entendre plusieurs fois le côté technique qui est extraordinaire et complètement débile.
«Halothane Glow» démarre sur un cri qui ne me convainc pas, mais heureusement que ça se replace pour laisser le meilleur côté de CRYPTOPSY ressortir. La passe de la basse au début de la chanson ne laissera aucun amateur de death metal technique indifférent. Le seul hic, à mon avis, c’est le côté à la Meshuggah qui dure un peu trop longtemps et qui enlève de l’originalité à la chanson. C’est définitivement celle que je préfère la moins sur l’EP. Sur la chanson «Framed By Blood», on peut y entendre, encore une fois, une influence de Meshuggah, mais heureusement (ou malheureusement pour les amateurs du groupe) que ça ne dure pas très longtemps puisqu’elle laisse la place à ce que CRYPTOPSY sait faire le mieux : du bon gros death metal brutal sans pitié. Et leur «outro» met un terme à un 17 minutes court et efficace.
Vocalement, il y a cette belle continuation avec ce que l’on pouvait entendre sur leur dernier album; on entend une certaine évolution et ça devient de mieux en mieux. À une seule reprise dans le EP je n’ai pas aimé le chant, et c’est au début de la troisième chanson où on dirait que le chanteur essaie de crier le plus fort possible sans toutefois impressionner mes oreilles.
Pour un groupe digne de ce nom, il était impératif que la production soit parfaite. Le son est très bon et on entend parfaitement tout le monde au point que le groupe a laissé un peu plus d’espace au bassiste pour que l’on entende bien ses partitions.
En conclusion, «The Book Of Suffering – Tome 1» est un EP parfait pour les amateurs des premières années du groupe. C’est brutal, rapide et totalement efficace. Les expérimentations du groupe n’ont pas nui à la qualité du EP et j’ai même trouvé des passes plus expérimentales complètement malades qui m’ont fait garder la bouche ouverte pendant quelques secondes. J’espère que le deuxième tome sera aussi brutal que le premier et qu’il y aura évidemment plus de chansons parce que 17 minutes de double pédale, ça passe très vite. I always thought it is interesting how one gets to know a band and how he finally enjoys a musical style. The reasons that lead to discover a band or type of music are numerous. For some of my readers, this information will be useless, but for others, I hope, interesting: my first encounter with Quebec extreme metal was with CRYPTOPSY through their live album entitled «None So Live» recorded at the (now closed) Medley in June 2002. I remember I bought this album because the concert was recorded in Montreal, but I did not know until my first listen it was a Quebec band.
After this brief intrusion in my private life, I get back to the main subject… the brand new EP recently released and available on their Bandcamp, entitled «The Book Of Suffering – Volume 1». Let’s see what we can expect.
I know it is an EP but I still thought that 17 minutes passed too quickly. I wanted to hear more which will not happen before the release of the second volume. Maybe it is me, but I also thought that all the songs abruptly ended and left me expecting for more. Otherwise, it offers very interesting compositions and I appreciated the fact that all the musicians had their place in the music.
«Détritus», with its intro, is a great song to start the EP or even possibly an album, and immediately sets the tone for the rest of the listening. The song «The Knife , The Head And What Remains» is the song that stands out the most because it is exactly what I love from CRYPTOPSY. I can not get tired of the technical side which is extraordinary and completely crazy.
«Halothane Glow» starts out with a cry that does not convince me, but fortunately it will not last and goes back to the best side of CRYPTOPSY. The bass riff at the beginning of the song should not leave indifferent any fan of technical death metal. The only problem for me is the Meshuggah style part that lasts a bit too long and that takes away some originality of the song. It is definitely the one I like the least on the EP. On the song «Framed By Blood», I can hear again an influence of Meshuggah, but fortunately (or unfortunately for fans of Meshuggah) it does not last very long since it leaves room for what CRYPTOPSY does best: intense brutal death metal without mercy. Then an outro puts an end to 17 minutes short but effective.
Vocally, there is this beautiful continuation with what could be heard on their latest album with a certain evolution and it’s getting better and better. On one occasion in the EP I did not like the vocal, and this is the beginning of the third song where it sounds like the singer is trying to shout as loud as possible without impressing my ears.
For a band of this level, it was imperative that the production is perfect. The sound is very good and I hear everyone perfectly to the point that the band left a little more space to the bassist so I hear out its partitions.
In conclusion, «The Book Of Suffering – Volume 1» is a perfect EP for fans of the early years of the band. It is brutal, fast and totally effective. The musical experiments have not affected the quality of the EP and I even thought the more experimental portions were completely sick and jaw-dropping. I hope that the second volume will be as brutal as this first one and that there will be more songs because 17 minutes of double pedal goes by very quickly.
