Dans le métal, il y a toujours des groupes qui se démarquent des autres pour une raison ou pour une autre. Certains groupes n’arrivent suffisamment pas à percer dans le milieu pour se faire un nom, d’autres ont besoin d’un seul album pour se faire un nom. Parmi ces derniers, il y a BABYMETAL, formé de trois jeunes chanteuses: Su-Metal (Suzuka Nakamoto), YuiMetal (Yui Mizuno) et MoaMetal (Moa Kikuchi) accompagnées par le groupe Kamiband, d’excellents musiciens qui ont fait partie de grands groupes japonais et dont le talent déborde de leurs instruments.
Après un succès planétaire avec leur tout premier album, qui a fini septième dans mon top 20 des meilleurs albums venant des artistes internationaux en 2014, et une tournée mondiale triomphante où le groupe s’est fait connaître partout sur la planète, il était intrigant de voir ce que le groupe allait nous offrir pour cette deuxième offrande.
On ne peut écarter le fait que la pression est énorme pour le groupe. Si le premier album a atteint la septième position dans mon top 20 en 2014, est-ce que celui-ci sera suffisamment bon pour s’introduire dans mon top 20 de cette année? N’oubliez pas qu’il y a encore huit mois à faire pour en faire partie et tout peut changer d’ici là. Je ne vous cacherai pas que mes attentes sont très élevées. Voyons ce que le groupe a à nous offrir pour leur deuxième album intitulé «Metal Resistance».
Le gros défaut de cet album est au niveau de la cohérence. Dans le premier album, on savait plus ou moins la direction que le groupe voulait réellement prendre, mais avec le deuxième, on le sait encore moins. En effet, il y a des chansons qui sont du Power Metal; une qui sonne comme du Folk Metal avec un refrain qui fait énormément penser à un générique d’un anime japonais; une qui sonne Prog Metal; une qui sonne comme du Death Metal, etc. C’est confondant à la longue et on ignore où le groupe s’en va avec ça. Étant donné que j’ai mentionné le Power Metal, si jamais vous ne le saviez pas, la chanson «Road Of Resistance», qui ouvre l’album, a été composée en partenariat avec les deux guitaristes de Dragonforce, Herman Li et Sam Totman. Disons qu’on reconnait très facilement la touche classique et personnelle des deux guitaristes. Déjà en partant, ça ouvre en grand.
Le côté que j’ai le plus apprécié dans cet album, c’est la place faite aux autres musiciens. Je suis content qu’il y ait eu plus de place aux talents des musiciens parce que croyez-moi, ils sont capables de jouer de façon très technique. Si on peut leur faire encore un peu plus de place sur le prochain album, ça va être parfait.
Le côté «HOLY SHIT» est attribué à la chanson «Amore», qui est la meilleure chanson de l’album à mon avis et qui offre un Power Metal que j’aime beaucoup, c’est-à-dire mélodique et rapide. Le côté «WTF» de l’album, parce qu’il faut ce côté dans un album de BABYMETAL, vient de la chanson «Meta Taro» étant donné que son refrain est identique à un générique d’un anime japonais, mais le reste sonne comme du Folk Metal, plus précisément comme du Ensiferum. La première fois que je l’ai entendue, j’ai sursauté dès que la partie Folk Metal est embarqué. Attention, je ne dis pas que cette chanson est mauvaise, mais seulement qu’elle m’a prise au dépourvu.
La plus mauvaise chanson de l’album est définitivement «From Dusk Till Dawn» où il ne se passe absolument rien et je l’ai trouvé très inutile. Il y a d’autres chansons où je n’ai pas accroché également, mais celle-là est plate à écouter. Et le côté le plus surprenant provient de la dernière chanson intitulée «The One». Non seulement l’album finit sur une chanson «Power Ballad», mais c’est aussi la seule chanson où les paroles sont uniquement en Anglais. La chanson n’est pas mauvaise, mais je ne l’aurais pas mise comme dernière chanson de l’album tout comme la chanson «No Rain, No Rainbow», avec son côté ballade des groupes hard rock des années 80. Je pense que «Road Of Resistance» aurait dû avoir cette honneur.
Mis à part tous ces côtés que j’ai identifiés, une autre chose qui m’a déçu est que cet album est moins «catchy» que le premier album. Il y a seulement quelques moments qui me sont restés dans la tête pendant quelques jours. Je pense notamment aux «ooooh oooh oooooh» dans la chanson «Road Of Resistance», au refrain dans «Meta Taro», au refrain dans «Awadama Fever» et la chanson «Karate». Et encore plus décevant, le côté j-pop est moins présent sur cet album. Est-ce dans le but de plaire à plus de métalleux possibles? Possible, mais ce qui rendait le premier album incroyable, oui, c’était son côté métal, mais aussi son côté «catchy» et son côté J-Pop. J’aimerais que le groupe retrouve sa recette gagnante du premier album.
Pour ce qui est des voix, oui, Su-Metal est celle qui domine le trio car il n’y a pas tant de présence pour les deux autres, MoaMetal et YuiMetal. C’est dommage parce que sur le premier album, elles étaient plus présentes sans toutefois enlever la vedette à Su-Metal. Ici, je trouve qu’elles sont plus discrètes. Elles font pourtant une belle job sur la chanson «Sis Anger».
Pour terminer, en parlant de la production, je peux vous dire que c’est similaire au premier album. Similaire dans le sens où on entend bien tout le monde et que personne ne prend plus de place qu’une autre et même les ambiances sont bien présentes dans la musique de BABYMETAL. Il s’agit ici d’une grosse production et on ne pourrait rester indifférent face à la qualité sonore de cet album.
En conclusion, «Metal Resistance» est un très bon album, mais comme je l’ai mentionné, il manque trop de cohérence. Non seulement ça, mais le côté «catchy» et le J-Pop sont beaucoup moins présents. Comme vous l’avez remarqué, j’ai également présenté quelques côtés qui m’ont fait réagir instantanément dès la première écoute. Certains sont positifs tandis que d’autres sont un peu plus négatifs. Si BABYMETAL peut trouver une et uniquement une seule direction, le prochain album va être beaucoup mieux. Si je dois sélectionner les trois chansons qui m’ont marqué sur cet album, ça serait: «Amore», «Sis Anger, et «Road Of Resistance». In the world of metal, there is always bands that stand out from others for one reason or another. Some groups do not manage to make a name for themselves whatever the work they put in their music, others need only one album to rise to some fame. Among these, there BABYMETAL, consisting of three young singers: Su-Metal (Suzuka Nakamoto), YuiMetal (Yui Mizuno) and MoaMetal (Moa Kikuchi), accompanied by the group Kamiband some excellent musicians who were part of major Japanese bands and whose talent is beyond their instruments.
After a worldwide success with their first album, which finished seventh in my top 20 list of the best albums by international artists in 2014, and a triumphant world tour where the group has become known around the world, I was curious about what the group would offer us for this second release.
One can not dismiss the fact that the pressure is enormous for the group. If the first album reached the seventh position on my top 20 list in 2014, will this one be good enough to get into my top 20 of this year? Remember that there are still eight months to go and a lot of albums to come out. I do not deny that my expectations are very high. Let’s see what the group has to offer for their second album entitled «Metal Resistance».
The first thing I noted about this album is the lack of consistency. On the first album, we knew more or less the direction the group really wanted to take, but here, it is more obscure. Indeed, there are songs that are the Power Metal; one that sounds like Folk Metal with a chorus that reminded me the soundtrack of a Japanese anime; one sounding Prog Metal; one that sounds like Death Metal, etc. This is confusing as I get through the album as I can’t figure out where the group is going with all this.
Since I mentioned Power Metal, if you do not know, the song «Road Of Resistance», which opens the album, was composed in partnership with the two Dragonforce‘s guitarists Herman Li and Sam Totman. Let’s say we recognize easily the classical and personal touch of both guitarists. This makes for a solid album opener.
The aspect that I liked the most about this album is the place given to the musicians. I am glad there was space for their talent because believe me, they are able to play in a very technical way. If they can push more in this direction on the next album, it will be perfect.
The « HOLY SHIT » moment of the album is assigned to the song «Amore» which is the best song on the album in my opinion and offers a style of Power Metal that I love, that is to say, melodic and fast. The «WTF» moment from the album, because I expect there will be one on a BABYMETAL album, comes with the song «Meta Taro» as the chorus is the same as the jingle of a Japanese anime, but the rest sounds like Folk Metal, specifically like Ensiferum. The first time I heard it, I was startled when the Folk Metal part got in. Note that I do not say that this song is bad, only that it took me by surprise.
The worst song is definitely «From Dusk Till Dawn» in which absolutely nothing is going on and I thought this song was unnecessary. There are other songs that left me kind of cold, but this one is boring. And the most surprising moment came from the last song called «The One». Not only the album ends wih a Power Ballad, but it is also the only song where the lyrics are in English only. The song is not bad, but I would not have put it as the last song of the album. I think «Road Of Resistance» should have this honor.
Aside from all aspects that I have identified, one more thing that disappointed me is that this album is less catchy than the previous. There are only some few moments that remained in my head for days. I think of the « oooh ooooh oooooh » in the «Road Of Resistance», the chorus in «Meta Taro», the chorus in «Awadama Fever» and the song «Karate». And what was even more disappointing, the J-Pop side is less present on this album. Is it in order to please to as many more metalheads as possible? Maybe, but what made the first album incredible was its metal side for sure, but also its catchy J-Pop side. I would like the group to return to its winning formula of the first album.
Vocally, Su-Metal is the one that dominates the trio with less presence of the other two, MoaMetal and YuiMetal. It is a shame because on the first album, they were more present while Su-Metal was still upfront. Here I find they are more discreet. More of them would be nice, listen to what they do on «Sis Anger».
Finally, regarding the production, I can tell you that this is similar to the first album. Similar in the sense that it intends to showcase properly all musicians and no one takes more spotlight than another. This is a «big league» production and I could not remain indifferent to the sound quality of this album.
In conclusion, «Metal Resistance» is a very good album, but as I mentioned, it lacks consistency. Furthermore, I really think it is not a good idea that the catchy J-Pop side is much less present. I also presented some aspects that made me react instantly from the first listen. Some are positive while others are a little more negative. If BABYMETAL can find one and only one direction to push their music, the next album is going to be much better. If I have to select three songs that stand out of the pack, it would be: «Amore», «Sis Anger», and «Road Of Resistance». You can get your copy now since April 1st in a music store near you.
