Depuis 2011, la formation montréalaise AVERSION a pris d’assaut la scène Black Metal québécoise avec des hymnes froids d’obédience scandinave teintés de certains aspects de Thrash Metal. Après une démo intitulée «Pre-life Nostalgia» (2013), la troupe menée par la chanteuse d’origine polonaise Vena Kava nous arrivait le 10 mai dernier avec un premier album de pleine longueur en carrière. La grande question était donc de savoir si AVERSION parviendrait à se démarquer dans la niche déjà extrêmement populeuse et malheureusement souvent infectée de médiocrité du Black Metal? D’entrée de jeu, la réponse sera positive!
En effet, sur son album éponyme, la formation complétée par Max Macabre (guitares), Nemrod (guitares), Leather King (basse) et Vilain (batterie) nous présente 8 titres se distinguant par des motifs de guitare accrocheurs tout en restant sombres, la voix râpeuse et tranchante de la sculpturale chanteuse et une batterie au jeu riche. Les compositions du groupe sont aussi caractérisées par des dynamiques intéressantes contenant des variations de tempos et de structures, évitant ainsi le piège de la monotonie.
Côté production, AVERSION opte pour la sobriété avec une sonorité organique et dynamique qui rend le tout humain et ne tombe pas dans une saturation à outrance ou une surproduction mécanique comme on en entend trop de nos jours. Le son ainsi obtenu est clair quoique comportant juste assez de saleté et naturel pour tous les instruments au risque de paraître un peu fade aux premières écoutes. La basse a aussi sa place dans le son d’AVERSION, ce qui n’est pas toujours le cas sur les albums Black Metal.
On est donc en présence d’un album de Black Metal qui se distingue par des compositions inspirées par les maîtres scandinaves du genre tout en comportant son originalité dans un côté accrocheur qui provient de certaines influences Thrash Metal se signalant par une concentration sur les tempos moyens et des motifs et solos de guitare agencés avec goût. Vilain ne se contente pas de pilonner tout sur son passage, mais sait aussi rajouter des passages plus «groovys» à la batterie ce qui enrichit grandement les compositions du groupe. Enfin, Vena Kava livre une performance exemplaire avec une voix agressive, très rauque, mais restant déchiffrable et mélodique à sa façon.
En somme, avec son album éponyme, AVERSION nous démontre tout son potentiel sur la scène Black Metal montréalaise. Avec des pièces accrocheuses, interprétées avec talent et à l’aide d’une production sobre et naturelle, le quintette a tout pour se distinguer de la masse des groupes Black Metal de la Belle Province. De plus, le groupe arrive à ce résultat tout en restant ancré dans la tradition d’inspiration scandinave que les amateurs d’arts noirs recherchent. L’album vaut le détour. Pour les résidents de Québec, AVERSION sera en spectacle avec NÄLZER, HAK-ED DAMM et PANZERFAUST le vendredi 31 juillet à l’Anti (anciennement l’Agitée) et ce sera samedi pour les Montréalais à l’Alizé.

Since 2011, the Montreal band AVERSION stormed the Quebec Black Metal scene with cold hymns of Scandinavian obedience tinged with some aspects of Thrash Metal. After a demo entitled «Pre-life Nostalgia» (2013), the band led by the singer of Polish origin Vena Kava arrived on May 10th with a first full length album. The big question was therefore whether AVERSION manage to stand out in the Black Metal niche already extremely crowded and unfortunately often infected by mediocrity? From the outset, the response will be positive!
Indeed, on its self-titled album, the outfit completed by Max Macabre (guitars), Nimrod (guitars), Leather King (bass) and Vilain (drums) presents 8 songs caracterized by catchy guitar patterns while still dark, the sharp and raspy voice of the sculptural singer and varied drum patterns. The compositions are also characterized by interesting dynamics that contain variations of tempos and structures, thus avoiding the trap of monotony.
On the production side, AVERSION opted for sobriety with an organic and dynamic sound that makes it human and does not fall in an excessive saturation or mechanical overproduction as we hear too much these days. The resulting sound is clear though with just enough dirt and feels natural for all instruments at the risk of sounding a bit bland at first listening. The bass also got its part of the spotlight in AVERSION, which is not always the case with Black Metal albums.
We are therefore in the presence of a Black Metal album that is characterized by compositions inspired by the Scandinavian masters of the genre while featuring its originality in a catchiness that comes from certain Thrash Metal influences noticeable with the focus on mid-tempos and guitar patterns and solos arranged with taste. Vilain is not content to pound everything in its path, but also knows how to add more groovy drum patterns which greatly enhance the compositions. Finally, Vena Kava delivers an exemplary performance with an aggressive voice, very hoarse, but still decipherable and melodic in its own way.
In short, with his self-titled album, AVERSION demonstrates its potential on the Montreal Black Metal scene. With catchy songs interpreted with talent supported by a sober and natural production, the quintet has all it takes to stand out from the mass of Black Metal bands of the Belle Province while remaining rooted in the Scandinavian-inspired tradition that lovers of the black art are looking for. This album is worth listening to. For the Quebec city residents, they’ll be performing with NÄLZER, HAK-ED DAMM et PANZERFAUST this Friday at l’Anti (formerly l’AgitéE) and the whole bunch of bands moves to Montreal to perform at l’Alizé on Saturday.
