Au risque de se répéter, on rencontre un nombre ahurissant de bands qui veulent se faire connaître et pour tous ceux qui sonnent comme une référence du passé, il y aussi ceux qui nous surprennent ou qui nous font un effet quelconque avec leur pays d’origine, techniques employées, langages, etc. Dans le cas de Hirsipuu, de Finlande, plusieurs de ces facteurs sont rencontrés, mais c’est surtout que je trouve leur album « Ihmisestä » très efficace, sans nécessairement redéfinir le style.
Je leur ai donc posé quelques questions et voici les réponses. On vous présente la version originale anglaise en premier et la traduction de Lex suit plus bas.

What does the name ‘Hirsipuu’ mean and how was it chosen?
–Hirsipuu means «Gallowsx. It’s credible and it has intensity in it, and in our opinion it leaves no margin in what kind of music you are dealing with.
How was the band formed?
-Singer and bassist Gardemeister and drummer Jokinen played in the same band in early 2000s, and around 2005-2006 they formed a project together. For several years there were only two members, and in 2011 guitarists Turpeinen and Kytömäki joined the band, and that has been the line-up since.
What are your main influences as musicians?
-We find our influences mostly from extreme metal, but anything goes that sounds good. Although our music is very coarse, we try to pick up versatile things so the listener can find something new with every listening.
Your brand of Death metal is very direct/brutal and heavy as fuck, is it difficult to make a name for yourself in a productive scene like Finland?
-Yes. You just have to do your own thing and constantly try to evolve, otherwise you get left behind.
Why did you choose to use your language and not english? Do you think it will help or not on the international scene?
-It just felt natural. We can express ourselves better in our own language, and it has very powerful, even violent feeling in it. We don’t think it directly helps us, but the advantages beats the disadvantages.
How is your music usually written? Is there one member that writes everything or it’s more a band effort?
-We write our music as a band. That way we can also get the versatility in it like I mentioned earlier.
The production is very impressive on the latest EP. Where did you record, with which producer and was he involved in the creating process in the end?
-At Teemu Salo‘s home studio. Teemu Salo recorded, mixed and mastered the album and was the co-producer. He did a lot of work with us and during the recording he gave us good advising in musical execution.
How did the collaboration with AHDISTUKSEN AIHIO PRODUCTIONS happened?
–Kytömäki and the owner of AAP got to know each other via mutual friends in the metal scene years back. We asked him for some counseling with the EP and he helped us a lot with pressing and promoting.
Have you shared the stage with well known bands or are you still on the underground circuit and love it that way?
-No. For now we are on the underground circuit, but Hirsipuu will beat you up and bale out.
Please tell us what’s coming up for the band in the next few months. Also, are you planning a tour in North America?
-At the moment we are of course promoting our new EP, and determined to start doing gigs. We have some new material and are constantly writing more. And, to be honest, tour in North America hasn’t crossed our minds but now when you mentioned it, everything is possible.

Que veut dire Hirsipuu et pourquoi avez vous choisi ce nom?
–Hirsipuu veut dire Potence. Ça l’a un sens et de l’intensité comme mot, et selon nous, ça ne laisse pas de doute sur le type de musique que vous aurez.
Comment le groupe s’est-il formé?
–Gardemeister, notre chanteur et bassiste, et Jokinen notre drummeur, jouaient tous deux dans le même groupe au début des années 2000 et vers 2005-2006, ils ont formé un projet ensemble. Pour plusieurs années, ce fut un duo puis en 2011, les guitaristes Turpeinen et Kytömäki ont rejoint le groupe et c’est le line up depuis.
Quelles sont vos principales influences comme musiciens?
-Nos influences viennent pour la plupart du extreme metal, mais ça peut venir de n’importe où quand on trouve que ça sonne bien. Malgré que notre musique est très rude, nous essayons de trouver des trucs variés pour que l’auditeur puisse découvrir de nouvelles choses à chaque écoute.
Votre type de death metal est très direct, brutal et violent. Est-ce difficile de faire votre nom à l’intérieur d’une scène aussi prolifique que celle de la Finlande?
-Oui. Vous devez faire vos propres choses et constamment essayer d’évoluer sinon vous êtes laissés pour contre.
Pourquoi avez-vous choisi d’utiliser votre propre langage au lieu de l’anglais? Pensez-vous que ça aidera ou nuira sur la scène internationale?
-Ça nous a juste semblé naturel. Nous pouvons plus facilement nous exprimer dans notre langue maternelle, et il y a des émotions très puissantes et même violentes dans notre musique. Nous ne croyons pas que ça nous aidera directement, mais les avantages dépassent les inconvénients.
Comment composez-vous votre musique habituellement? Y a t-il un seul membre qui compose tout ou est-ce plus une implication commune de tous les membres?
-Nous composons notre musique ensemble en tant que groupe. De cette façon, nous obtenons de la variété comme je l’ai mentionné plus tôt.
La production pour le dernier EP est très impressionnante. Où l’avez-vous enregistré, avec quel producteur et ce dernier s’est-il impliqué dans le processus créatif final.
-Au studio maison de Teemu Salo. Teemu Salo a enregistré, mixé et masterisé le EP et en a été le co-producteur. Il a fait beaucoup de travail avec nous et nous a donné de précieux conseils quand à l’éxécution musicale pendant l’enregistrement.
Comment s’est établie la collaboration avec AHDISTUKSEN AIHIO PRODUCTIONS?
–Kytömäki et le propriétaire de AAP se sont connus il y a des années par l’entremise d’amis communs de la scène metal. Nous lui avons demandé de nous conseiller pour le EP et il nous a beaucoup aidés pour l’impression du CD puis la promotion.
Avez-vous partagé la scène avec des groupes connus jusqu’à maintenant ou êtes-vous encore sur le circuit underground et aimez-bien la situation comme elle est?
-Non. Pour l’instant, nous sommes dans le circuit underground mais Hirsipuu veut tout détruire, vous achever et vous en voudrez encore.
SVP dites-nous ce qui s’en vient pour le groupe dans les prochains mois. Planifiez-vous une tournée nord-américaine?
-Pour le moment, nous sommes bien sûr en pleine promotion pour notre nouveau EP et sommes déterminés à débuter une série de shows. Nous avons du nouveau matériel et en écrivons constamment du nouveau. Pour être honnête, une tournée nord-américaine ne nous a pas effleuré l’esprit mais maintenant que tu en parles, tout est possible.

Les boys de Halifax (UK) nous arrive avec « Splinters » le 12 mai prochain et c’est avec « Scabs » qu’ils essaient de vous donner le goût de l’acheter. Century Media aura l’honneur de présenter leur 2e LP, 3 ans après la sortie de « A Fragile King« . Avec Kurt Ballou derrière la console, ne soyez pas surpris du son absolument débile qui s’échappe de vos speakers dans les prochaines minutes. Ça déstabilise, solide!
Le lineup du groupe ne vous sera pas inconnu avec des membres ayant oeuvré au sein de Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, Doom et At the Gates.
Inspired by the likes of Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, Autopsy, Antisect, Discharge, Nihilist, early Napalm Death, early Bathory, and Conflict, VALLENFYRE digs deep into the roots of extreme music, yet due to Greg‘s infallible song-writing skills, as well as the organic and absolutely crushing sound courtesy of Kurt Ballou (Converge, Black Breath, Beastmilk), « Splinters » is far away from mere nostalgia.
Voici l’histoire du groupe avec les mots de Gregor (chant/lead guitar)
I was first introduced to more extreme music by my older brother in 1981. Over the next few years in my early teens I grew to love various early hardcore punk bands like Discharge, English Dogs, Conflict etc. Around a similar time I was becoming aware of other more metal music like Motörhead and Black Sabbath.
In ’84/85′ I got into bands who were fusing these styles like Hellhammer, Antisect and Amebix. A couple of years later I started tape trading with people all around the world which enabled me to hear lots of really cool, interesting, extreme music. Autopsy, Napalm Death, Morbid Angel, Repulsion, Nihilist are some of the more well known names I started to get into but there were many many more which never gained the same notoriety. At the same time I formed Paradise Lost with my friend. Our early stuff was a bit of a mixture of all this stuff but we also had a lot of doom influence from the likes of Candlemass, Trouble and St Vitus.
In ’88 we started gigging and played mainly with bands from the crust scene and proto death metal/grind scene like Extreme Noise Terror, Hellbastard, Napalm Death, Bolt Thrower, Christ on Parade, Carcass, Electro Hippies etc. We got offers to sign a deal with Earache and Peaceville Records but opted for the latter probably because they were geographically the nearest and we already knew and respected Hammy who owned Peaceville and we liked his former band Civilised Society. This was a very fun time. We were getting to play all over Europe with bands we loved. We even did a European joint headline tour with Autopsy, who had never been to Europe before, which was great – but the living conditions were horrendous. There was us, Autopsy, Hammy, Tez (Instigators) and Baz our ever faithful driver all crammed into one small transit van with all our gear and a rat infested sofa from our rehearsal room, but we loved every minute.
At that time, these forms of music were our life. We loved it and lived it, and I’m proud to have been involved in the evolution of it.
The events that led to the conception and formation of VALLENFYRE are not particularly happy or pretty ones. In the late summer of 2009, my father John Mackintosh was diagnosed with prostate cancer. We were not too worried at first as this is a common and quite curable form of cancer. Later in the Autumn as his treatment progressed, Paradise Lost embarked on their European tour to support the latest album [Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us]. We began in the UK with our good friends Katatonia and Engel. A week into this, I received a call from my mother telling me that the doctors had found cancer in his lungs and it was terminal. He only had weeks to live. I made the decision to leave the tour before it went to mainland Europe leaving my very able guitar tech Milly to take my place. I went and stayed with my parents for the next few weeks. After a very sad and painful time he passed away on the 2nd December early in the morning. Over the next few weeks I experienced all the famous stages of grief. It started to become very self destructive so I decided to channel it into creating something. To pay respects to the man that drove us to our very first gigs because none of us could drive. The only Dad I knew that listened to Bolt Thrower’s Peel Sessions on the radio. The guy who gave me my first chord book. I decided that I was going to go right back to the beginning. To my roots in Death, Crust and Doom. It all started very Angst ridden. This wasn’t originally meant for anyone else to hear. It was a release. After recording some material I realized that I was actually enjoying doing this but I wanted friends involved so it could actually become real fun.
Deciding which friends to get involved in this was not that difficult.
Adrian is already the drummer in Paradise Lost, and not only is he a great drummer and a good friend, he also has a great pedigree and taste in music. He grew up in similar musical circumstances to me in Gothenburg, Sweden. He started at a young age in At The Gates and he was also in Skitsystem (who I think are a fantastic band). The Gothenburg scene was a thriving scene for extreme music. I wrote to lots of people from Gothenburg in the tape trading days (including Fredrik Wallenberg who went on to start Skitsystem with Adrian). It was a small world indeed. Adrian thought it sounded like a lot of fun and agreed.
Hamish is a friend of many years. An all round lovely chap who grew up in my home town of Halifax. Every time I go back to my home town I give Hamish a call to see if he wants some ales in The Sportsman (one of the first pubs I ever went in and still the same good old rock establishment today as it was then), to which he always says yes. Again he has a good pedigree being the guitarist in My Dying Bride and a very good knowledge of quality doom metal. I approached the subject of him playing with me on this project during one of our hardcore drinking sessions in The Sportsman and in his usual enthusiastic manner, he said he thought it was a bloody good idea.
Scoot is the person I’ve known the longest I think. Probably about 20 years ago I needed someone to rent a room in my house and I was already an acquaintance of Scoot’s as we were both previously part of the Halifax punks, so I asked if he wanted to move in, which he did. He was playing in the band Doom (which he still does as well as a few others…Extinction of Mankind, Alehammer) and was, and still is fanatical about underground crust, punk, metal etc. I remember whilst living together I had to go and do a 7 week tour supporting Sepultura in Europe [1993]. During that tour Max Cavalera never spoke one word to me. Upon my return home I received a phone call and amazingly it was Max, but he didn’t want me. He wanted to talk to Scoot because he wanted him to play in his new band Nailbomb. Typical. Scoot was interested in doing this VALLENFYRE project with me but wanted to hear it so I had to knock together some demos. He is very specific in what he does and doesn’t like so I was pleased when he said he loved the stuff.
I was originally going to be purely a guitarist for this project but because I didn’t have any friends whose vocals I thought fit the stuff, and because the lyrics were so personal I decided to handle them myself and get another guitarist, so finally I asked Mully who is my friend from where I live now. Every Thursday I go to his house and we have a few beers and listen to lots of old school stuff as well as checking out newer underground stuff we’ve heard about. Having only played in local bands previously, I assured him he would be among friends playing the kind of music they love. He agreed.
The enthusiasm for the music from rest of the guys in the band convinced me to send a demo to another friend called Jens Prueter who is head of A&R at Century Media Europe. I didn’t hear anything for a couple of weeks and then I got an email from Jens apologizing for the late reply as he was on holiday, and that he was blown away by the demo and would love to do something with it. This resulted in us recording a limited edition 7″ [on Imperium Productions] and an album between December 2010 and April 2011. Because we knew exactly how we wanted it to sound, we just needed someone we trusted to record it and mix it. I asked another friend (and live sound engineer for Paradise Lost) James Dunkley to record it for me and then it was mixed by Russ Russell at Parlour Studios [Napalm Death, The Exploited, Dimmu Borgir, etc]. We are all really pleased with the result and look forward to its release.Oh and the name Vallenfyre came to me whilst reading a book on the old English language. Vallen means « strong » and fyre means … « fire ». I just liked the sound of them together. The album is called « A Fragile King » which is a reference to my fathers’ battle with cancer. The lyrics are predominantly about the same thing but also include gripes with society, religion, politics and relationships as well.
It’s all pretty grim.

Viruly de Montréal perd don drummer, mais les nouvelles ne sont pas toutes mauvaises: « This is with regret that our Drummer has taken a new start in his life and have to quit the band, in fact JN will be moving to France for personal purpose, we wish him the best of luck, in the meantime,audition have already begin, we’ll let you know very soon about our new member »………. En regardant les premières parties des shows de ce soir au Québec, je me suis aperçu de l’existence de Vacant, une formation de Montréal avec des noms connus (Zach Heuff, Eddie Levitzky et Blake Lemieux) et une sonorité différente, un mix de Hardcore/Métal et Post-Hardcore. Si j’aurais à deviner, je dirais que c’est un projet de Zach, mais avec des musiciens sessions et des shows de temps en temps. Je suis allé aux sources, alors on s’en reparle quand j’ai des news!
Dancing Dead de Chicoutimi dévoilait hier un vidéoclip tourné live le 11 avril dernier lors de leur show avec Dance Laury Dance. C’est du métal/alternatif pour vous autres!
Bien hâte d’entendre ce que Kadraal nous réserve côté album studio et ils en parlaient justement hier: « le cd avance tres tres bien 8 chansons d enregistré reste plus que 4 toune et apres le mix j ai hate . »………. Dark Circles de Montréal a aussi de bonne nouvelle pour les fans et on l’attendait depuis un bout: « We’ll be releasing a new single from our upcoming LP in the next few days ». Je vous conseille fortement d’aller les entendre/télécharger GRATUITEMENT dès maintenant en suivant ce lien et de ne pas les rater le 6 juin prochain dans la métropole dans un show bénéfice contre le cancer……… Souvent je me dis que j’aimerais du beat différent, alors je vous propose The Expectorated Sequence de Montréal avec un mélange de Grind et j’aime bien leur terme emoviolence, qui englobe beaucoup de leurs compos. Ce qui m’attire le plus est l’inconnu et leurs compos m’offrent exactement ça: je sais jamais où ça s’en va et c’est parfait de même. Swear to Me de Montréal nous propose un ostie de bon post concernant le nouveau EP et quand on va pouvoir se le procurer: « Next Wednesday, we will be entering the studio for one last final time to complete our mixes. Québec offre une bonne formation de Blackened Hardcore/Powerviolence sous le nom de Diogène de Sinope et ils viennent tout juste de sortir leur premier démo qui est en écoute/téléchargement GRATUIT ci-dessous. Le tout a été produit par David Raymond Leblanc, un produit assurément thrash et pur!
Towards Darkness de Montréal fait dans le Doom/Sludge et ils nous présentent le cover de leur sortie à venir, « Tetrad »: « Voici l’épreuve finale du travail graphique pour le prochain album. Celui-ci s’intitulera TETRAD. »
Un des bands de la 1ère soirée du Challenge Parkinson était Endless Rebirth et ils ont mis en ligne hier un vidéo de leur performance de cette soirée. Vous en pensez quoi?

Des nouvelles pas du tout musicales du côté de Cynic: « In a new interview with the Los Angeles Times, former Death and current Cynic members Paul Masvidal (guitar, vocals) and Sean Reinert (drums) openly discuss their sexuality (they’re both gay) and its impact on their participation in the metal scene. »………. Un autre rapport/résumé de certaines tournées qui vont bien et d’autres qui sont moins en santé………. Trivium a viré son drummer en plein milieu de leur tournée et leur drum tech Mat Madiro prend sa place pour l’instant………. Le nouvel album de Body Count sortira le 10 juin sur Summerian Records………. Killer Be Killed (Mastodon’s Troy Sanders, The Dillinger Escape Plan’s Greg Puciato, Soulfly/Cavalera Conspiracy’s Max Cavalera and drummer Dave Elitch, who logged time in The Mars Volta) ne semble pas avoir renversé personne avec leur premier extrait de nouveau projet, mais là c’est l’album au complet que vous pouvez vous mettre dans les oreilles en suivant ce lien………. C’est un peu moins ma tasse de thé, même si je reconnais le talent des musiciens impliqués, mais ça pourrait intéresser beaucoup de monde The Hollywood Monsters, un band qui réuni Steph Stevens (Vocals/Guitar) Tim Bogert (Vanilla Fudge, Cactus à la basse), Don Airey (Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Michael Schenker sur les keyboards) et Vinnie Appice (Dio, Black Sabbath). Du gros (Hard) Rock d’Hollywood!………. Israel n’est peut-être pas connu pour son Thrash métal, mais Hammercult pourrait changer tout ça avec la promotion de leur album « Steelcrusher » par le visionnement de ce tout nouveau vidéo.
Une nouvelle track pour le band Structures (Toronto) et c’est tiré de leur nouvel opus qui sort le 13 mai. Adrian de Northlane y fait une apparition.
Vous les connaissez Twelve Foot Ninja qui sont à Montréal ce soir et demain à Québec? Si vous êtes ouverts d’esprits, c’est définitivement des australiens pour vous, surtout qu’ils auront des bands locaux en ouverture de spectacle.
Atlanta a ses Braves qui domine la division Est de la ligue Nationale au baseball (désolé, mais habituez-vous au références de baseball dans mes textes, j’en suis passionné), mais aussi le groupe de Black Métal appelé Hellgoat qui tente de dominer son domaine d’activité. Le 7″ vinyle « End of Man » sera disponible le 31 mai prochain et crisse que c’est sadique comme approche musicale.
Le 1er album complet du groupe de Sacramento, Alterbeast intitulé « Immortal » est sorti le 18 mars et si vous trippez sur le technical death metal, vous devez vous taper l’écoute de ça. Y’a des mélodies pas mal intéressantes là-dedans en plus.(Lex)
Des fois, ils nous échappent… d’autres fois ça prend juste plus de temps avant de vous en parler. « Trinity of falsehood », le 2ème album du groupe de extreme brutal death de Sacramento, The Kennedy Veil est sorti en janvier. Ça ne fait pas dans la dentelle mais des fois c’est juste cool que ça rentre au poste et là dessus on ne peut pas vraiment les obstiner. (Lex)
Les Norvégiens de Vulture Industries font du progressive metal depuis 2003 avec 2 démos, 1 EP et 3 LP dont le dernier, « The tower » qui date de septembre 2013. Moi, bien que je trouve leur construction de pièces très intéressante, c’est leur vocal qui m’a accroché. Je vous offre donc d’écouter leur dernier album. (Lex)
Postuma Aniquilacion est un groupe de death metal de Patagonie, ça c’est en bas complètement de l’Amérique du Sud. Formé en 1994, il est de retour avec un EP sorti en 2013 intitulé « Innominable » sur l’étiquette The Desolation Serpent Records, qui reprend le bon vieux son old school. (Lex)
Le groupe black/death français, Ishtar est maintenant prêt à laisser sa marque avec un 1er Ep de 6 pièces, « From the gates » paru en août 2013. (Lex)

« So much flesh, so many different pleasures »
C’est de cette façon que s’entame l’écoute du nouveau EP de Human Compost, « The Cold Flesh« , un mélange de Death et Goregrind bien gras qui saura plaire aux fans de Mortician, Macabre et Gérontophile. Les boys ont formé le band en 2013, donc le tout est très récent, mais ils sont déjà prêt à l’enregistrement de leur nouvelle attaque sonore, même en sachant que « The Cold Flesh » vient tout juste de sortir. Avec le printemps qui s’en vient et le jardinage annuel qui se prépare, quoi de mieux qu’un thème de chair fraîche et de compost pour nous rappeler que dans quelques semaines le monde vont chialer sur facebook qu’il fait trop chaud.

During the winter of 2014 Human Compost‘s lineup was fully fleshed out with the addition of Allen (of Serene Molestation) on drums. « The Cold Flesh » EP is a bitter taste of the hateful sounds soon to come from this band.

Human Compost is the twisted brainchild of Eddie Pharoah (Vesication) and Chris Sabbath (Befouled Serenity), who joined forces in 2008 with the intention of creating simple, raw and dirty goregrind. The project was temporarily put to rest so they could focus on other projects, only to be exhumed once more in 2012. Geoff Hodsman (Vesication, Gravitational Distortion) joined as a vocalist, and offered his services as a studio drummer during the summer of 2013, allowing Human Compost to complete their first EP, « Degradation of a Virgin Corpse« . During the conclusion of the recording process Simon Haroon joined on guitars just in time to record an intense and chaotic solo for Human Compost‘s longest song, « Reduced to Human Sludge ». The band is poised to complete their lineup and begin performing live, and is continuing to write and rehearse more decrepit tunes for future release. In early 2014, Allen of Serene Molestation officially joined on drums to complete the Human Compost lineup.

Dans toute la panoplie de shows présentés de vendredi à dimanche prochain (9 au 11 mai), il y a une tournée de trois dates en trois soirs qui se doit d’être au moins dans vos priorités et c’est celle de Insurrection, band de Death metal de Gatineau qui fait des ravages sur scène.
Avec leur dernier album « Prototype » sorti chez Galy Records et encore tout jeune et clairement un must pour la collection des trippeux de la province (et du monde…), je vous conseille d’aller l’écouter en entier en suivant ce lien afin de ne pas rater le bateau et vous demander plus tard pourquoi tout le monde connaît ça…. sauf vous!
Vendredi leur premier arrêt se fait du côté de Trois-Rivières et c’est Trois-Rivières Métal qui présente la soirée, alors que Solaris Booking s’occupe de vous décaper la face samedi et dimanche soir du côté de Québec et Montréal, respectivement.
