Critique d’album: Lutharo – Hiraeth (2021)

Que d’attentes pour cet album. J’ai découvert ce band incroyable avec l’écoute de la chanson thème de leur premier EP Wings of Agony sorti début 2020. J’ai été immédiatement séduit par leur orientation musicale, avec une chanteuse capable de délivrer de gros growls en mixant avec un vocal clean aigu et puissant. Il va sans dire que j’attendais avec impatience la sortie de leur premier LP intitulé “Hiraeth”.

Première écoute, je m’aperçois d’un changement majeur: la chanteuse a modifié sa voix !? Je m’exclame tout d’abord “merde!” pour aussitôt me reprendre et me dire que je vais probablement m’habituer. Elle a troqué ses monstrueux growls pour un screamplus aigu, en bref elle a basculé de 2 octaves vers le haut! C’est un choix discutable, mais intéressant, nous allons y revenir plus tard pour vous délivrer la question que vous vous demandez tous (ou pas): Axel aime ou non? À voir… Il est important de mentionner que j’ai un immense faible pour les chanteuses métal, je vais certainement lui laisser sa chance ;).

Continuons avec le contenu musical: on a définitivement monté d’un niveau depuis le EP. C’est technique, rapide et on y dénote la présence de solos superbement bien joués. C’est diaboliquement satisfaisant. Au travers des pistes, je sens une influence de power metal très marquée. Ayant beaucoup écouté ce genre dans mes débuts dans l’univers du métal, j’aime encore sa présence à petite dose, et le dosage ici est idéal pour moi. Étant également un fan du band “Unleash the Archers”, je mettrais ma main au feu que le band les aime aussi, leur style s’y apparente beaucoup.

L’album commence en force avec un single déchirant To Kill or to Crave, le scream au début de la chanson nous donne immédiatement un sourire démoniaque! Une énergie s’y dégage et on sait que l’expérience de cette écoute risque d’être plaisante. On arrive au milieu de l’album et dénote un petit peu de séquences répétitives, mais rien de dérangeant. On regagne en vigueur à partir de la chanson 6, où le band commence à faire apparaître de plus en plus de blast beats, comme si on venait d’allumer que l’auditoire nécessitait un peu de vigueur. Et pour finir, ma pièce préférée de l’album, Lost in a Soul, une merveilleuse piste qui alterne bien le chant clean et le scream de la chanteuse. J’accorde toujours un intérêt particulier dans le choix de LA bonne piste pour clore l’album, celui-ci me séduit totalement.

Les points fort d’Axel:

• Bon choix de l’ordre des pistes
• Des solos très techniques et bien placés
• Des singles solides qui sont des pièces importantes dans le puzzle de l’album et qui, lorsqu’ils sont sortis il y a quelques mois, ont provoqué avec succès de l’anticipation pour l’album
• La puissance de la voix clean de Krista, ainsi que son range et sa justesse

Les points faibles d’Axel:

• C’est purement personnel, mais même après 4-5 écoutes, je préfère l’ancien scream à Le nouveau sonne plutôt bien cependant et s’agence bien avec la mélodie
• L’impression de répétitivité au milieu de l’album

Pour conclure, mes attentes étaient très élevées et j’ai été satisfait presque à 100%. J’aime beaucoup la direction musicale qu’ils prennent et le degré de maturité qu’ils possèdent déjà. Bon, on voit bien qu’ils sont dotés de beaucoup de talents, mais il faut apprécier leur ardeur au travail, on n’obtient pas un son aussi recherché en comptant seulement sur le talent naturel, c’est du dévouement pure et simple. On leur souhaite une excellente continuation!

So many expectations for this album! I discovered this incredible band with the theme song of their first release, the EP Wings of Agony released at the beginning of 2020. At that time, I was seduced by their sound, with a single capable of delivering a powerful clean voice as well as a monstruous death metal growl. Needless to say, I was heavily looking forward for their first LP.

What happened with her voice?! She did change her growl for a scream. At first I was like” Shit!”, but I immediately took over myself to let me have time to get used to it. The choice is debatable, but interesting and I will come back to it later to give you the answer to the question everyone is asking themselves (or not): do Axel likes it finally? Given the fact that I have a noticeable passion for women metal singer, I will certainly open my mind and give her a chance.

Let’s go on with the musical content: we leveled up since the EP. It’s technical, speedy and the solos are insanely complete and well played. They did their homework over there. I sense as well that they put a little more of the power metal influence, and it works pretty well. On the side of things, I’m a pretty big fan of another Canadian band called “Unleash the Archers”, and I strongly suspect that they like them too. I can hear a lot of influence of style. That being said, both bands have their own wonderful style, so no problems being similar.

The album starts in full force with the single “To Kill or To Crave” with Krista delivering a diabolic and energic “GWAAAAAAHHHH!!”, giving me an instant smile on my face. The energy is already at high stake, and we know we are on a pleasant journey. Going through half of it, we sense a little bit of repetition, but nothing disturbing. As the band sensed that the “crowd” needed a little energy, they put more and more blast beats through songs 6 and so on, which makes us headbanging again. All this on the way for the final song, my favorite of all: “Lost in a soul”, a charming alternance between Krista’s screams and cleans, fitting very well with a wonderful melody. I always give a particular importance for the choice of every album’s last piece, and here this one is a 10/10 for me.

Axel’s thumbs up:

• Tracks order are on point
• Well played technical solos
• Super good singles. Those are key songs in the album’s puzzle and when they got out some months ago, they succeeded to create anticipation for the upcoming album
• Singer Krista Shipperbottom’s clean signing, impressive range and a lot of power

Axel’s thumbs down:

• Personal opinion, but I still prefer Krista’s old scream. The new one is not as good for me, but after a few listens I understand that it fits with the melodies and riffs
• The short repetitive part in the middle of the album

My expectations were high and I was almost 100% satisfied. I like a lot the musical path they are taking and I appreciate their level of maturity I hear for their very first LP. They are certainly very talented, but their hard work is obvious. We cannot obtain this technical level and sound quality without working our asses off, so we wish them to continue this way, keep it up guys!

Lutharo est une formation canadienne qui arrive tout droit d’Hamilton en Ontario. Le groupe a vu le jour en 2013 et avec ce nouvel album, il est évident qu’ils sont de plus en plus ferrés et solides.

Contrairement à mon collègue, j’ai découvert le groupe lors d’un show live, donc je connais seulement le growl qu’on entend sur le nouvel album, ce qui m’a permis de valider lors de l’écoute de ce nouvel album, si le groupe est à la hauteur en live. Mon opinion sur le sujet sera un peu plus loin dans ma critique. Suite à ce spectacle durant l’été 2021, j’étais impatiente d’entendre le nouvel album et je ne suis pas déçue.

L’album débute avec un coup de force, dès les premières secondes de l’intro, le battement de coeur vient nous chercher aux tripes, ce qui nous prépare bien à la suite qui nous donnes aucun autre choix que de headbanger.

La première pièce To kill Or To Crave fait partie de mes points fort de l’album. Elle commence en force un growl typique de Krista et s’ensuit des riffs entrainants et le drum, qui est très présent, donne un excellent élan à l’album. Sans oublier que le clip de la pièce est tout aussi excellent visuellement que musicalement.

Mon second coup de coeur est What Sleeps In Your Mind. L’intro, avec la bass bien distincte, m’a conquise immédiatement, c’est plus pesant, c’est lourd, c’est parfait! Tout comme les pièces Phantom et Worship Your Path avec des moments plus lents et pesants. Il n’y a aucun doute sur le talent de chacun des membres du groupe, que ce soit les solos de guitares, le drum, la bass ou le chant, tout est parfaitement orchestré et bien organisé pour donner une énergie incroyable à cet album.

Le seul point négatif que je pourrais amener est que l’album se ressemble beaucoup d’une chanson à l’autre, mais que cela ne tienne, elles sont toutes excellentes et donnent le goût de trasher et de crier : To kill or to craaaveee, yaaaahhhh!!!!

La voix de Krista est versatile et incroyable. Et contraitement à bien des chanteuses, que ce soit sur l’album ou en spectacle, le rendu de sa voix clean et celle de la voix growl  est identique. Pas de fausses notes, ses chants cleans high pitch sont parfaits du début à la fin d’un show. Si vous hésitez à aller voir le groupe en spectacle suite à cette sortie d’album, je vous conseille fortement de mettre vos doutes de côté et d’y aller all in. Tout est impeccable sur scène, tout comme l’album Hiraeth.

Pour cet album, j’y vais de pair avec mon collègue : 9/10!

Lutharo is a Canadian band coming straight from Hamilton, Ontario. The band was formed in 2013 and with this new album, it’s obvious that they are ready to conquer the world!

In opposition to my collegue, I first saw Lutharo during a live show in 2021. So I only know Krista’s present growl, which allowed me to validate if the band is up to it live, like on the album. My opinion on the matter will be discussed a little further in my review. Following this show in the summer of 2021, I was impatient to hear the new album and I am not disappointed.

The album starts off with a bang, the heartbeat of the intro gives us chills in our guts, which prepares us for the rest of the album and gives us no other choice except headbanging.

The first track To Kill Or To Crave is one of my highlights. It starts in force with a typical Krista’s growl leading to some catchy riffs and a very present drum which gives excellent boost to the album. In addition, we must not forget the music video for this track, it’s just as excellent visually as it is musically.

My second highlights is What Sleeps In Your Mind. The intro, with distinct bass, won me over immediately. It’s heavier, it’s perfect! Just like the track Phantom and Worship Your Path. They have slower and heavier moments. There is no doubt about the talent of each members, whether it be the guitar solos, the drum, the bass or the vocals, everything is perfectly orchestrated and well organized to give an incredible energy to this album.

The only negative point I could bring is that the album is similar from one song to another, but never mind, they are all excellent and give the taste of trashing and cry out loud : To kill or to craaaveee, yaaaahhhh!!!!

Krista’s voice is versatile and amazing. And unlike many singers, whether on the album or during a live show, her clean voice and growl voice are identical. No wrong notes, his clean high pitch vocals are perfect from start to end of a show. If you still hesitate to go see the band in a live show following this new album release, please put your doubts aside an go all in. Everything is flawless on the album Hiraeth as it will be on stage.
