Récemment, j’ai été dans un trip de Rammstein et de Ministry, deux piliers extrêmement importants de la scène Industrial Metal. Toutefois, je suis resté attentif aux nombreuses sorties que la fin du mois de septembre et le début du mois d’octobre me réservaient. Là où je veux en venir, c’est une sortie d’album d’un groupe dont le pays d’origine n’est pas réputé pour avoir des artistes dans ce genre musical. C’est pourquoi je trouvais intéressant de vous parler du premier album du groupe français DUST IN MIND intitulé «Never Look Back». Le groupe est composé de cinq membres: une chanteuse, deux guitaristes (dont un chante aussi), un bassiste et un batteur. En 2013, le groupe a sorti un EP éponyme, qui contient sept chansons qui n’apparaissent pas sur leur premier album. Environ un mois avant la sortie de son album, DUST IN MIND a également sorti un vidéo-clip pour la chanson «Frozen Smiles». Voyons à quoi ressemble son premier album.
Musicalement, comme je l’ai dit dans mon introduction, c’est de l’Industrial Metal. Dans l’ensemble, les compositions sont biens et originales, mais il peut arriver que certains riffs se répètent d’une chanson à une autre. Ce n’est toutefois pas un gros drame. Je dirais aussi que certains de ces riffs me font penser à ce qu’Hypocrisy a eu l’habitude de nous offrir puisque le son des guitares est très lourd. J’ajouterai aussi qu’il y a un côté qui me fait penser à Lacuna Coil par moment, comme dans «Farewell».
Ce qui a particulièrement attiré mon attention, ce sont les ambiances industrielles comme dans les chansons «Frozen Smiles» et «The Slave Of Man». Elles sont originales et donnent vraiment le goût de bouger. Je trouve dommage que l’album ne soit pas totalement dans la même veine, ce qui, selon mes goûts personnels, rendrait l’album encore meilleur. N’empêche, j’ai tout de même bougé la tête sur chaque chanson à différents niveaux selon mon appréciation.
En ce qui concerne la voix, ou plutôt les voix, je m’attendais à ce que la chanteuse pousse davantage ses cordes vocales, un peu comme les chanteuses de Symphonic Metal le font, mais j’avoue que son approche lyrique ne m’a pas dérangé. Par contre, elle manque de diversité dans l’utilisation de sa voix puisque j’ai l’impression que c’est pareil de chanson en chanson. Pour la voix masculine plus «death», je dois vous avouer que je suis mitigé. Sur certaines chansons, elle est mal utilisée ou elle manque clairement de puissance, tandis que sur d’autres morceaux, j’ai trouvé que ça va bien avec l’ambiance et le rythme de la chanson. C’est l’aspect à travailler davantage selon moi.
Au niveau de la production, on entend très bien tout le monde et les sonorités industrielles ne font pas tache à la qualité de la production. Venant d’un nouveau groupe, la production est professionnelle. Le seul reproche que je puisse faire concerne le volume du vocal masculin qui me parait un peu bas.
En conclusion, «Never Look Back» est un bon premier album d’Industrial Metal. Certes, il y a des choses qui devraient être révisées et retravaillées, mais dans l’ensemble on peut dire qu’on a un produit de qualité pour ce groupe underground français de Strasbourg.

Recently I decided to enjoy again two very important bands of the Industrial Metal scene, Rammstein and Ministry. However, I remained attentive to the many releases that the end of September and beginning of October had in store for me. And this through that brought me toward an album from a band whose country of origin is not known to have artists in the Industrial Metal genre. That’s why I thought it would be interesting to talk to you about the first album of the French band DUST IN MIND entitled «Never Look Back». The band consists of five members: one singer, two guitarists (one of them doing vocals), a bassist and a drummer. In 2013, the band released a self-titled EP, which contains seven songs. About a month before the release of the album, DUST IN MIND released a music video for the first single of the album, «Frozen Smiles». Let’s see what they have to offer.
Musically, as I said in my introduction, it’s Industrial Metal. Overall, the compositions are good and original but at times, riffs are repeated from one song to another. This is not however a big drama. I would add that some of these riffs remind me what Hypocrisy used to offer as the guitar sound is very heavy. I would say that there is also a side to its music that makes me think of Lacuna Coil at times, as in «Farewell».
What particularly caught my attention is the industrial ambiance as in the songs «Frozen Smiles» and «The Slave Of Man». They are original and make me wanna move to the beat. I regret that the album is not totally in the same vein which, according to my personal taste, would have made an even better album. Nevertheless, each song at different levels, got me to shake my head.
As for the voice, or rather the voices, I expected that the female singer would have pushed more her vocal cords, much like the Symphonic Metal female singers do, but I admit that her lyrical approach didn’t bother me. By cons, she lacks diversity in the use of her voice as it feels the same, song after song. For the male «death» vocal, I must admit that I have mixed feelings. In some songs, it’s as if not used properly or clearly lacks power, while in other tracks, it fits well with the atmosphere and rhythm of the song. This is the aspect to work more in my opinion.
In terms of production, I could hear everyone and the industrial sounds don’t stain the quality of production. Coming from a new band, the production is professional. The only complaint I can make is about the volume of the male vocal that seems a little low.
In conclusion, «Never Look Back» is a good Industrial Metal first album. Certainly, there are things that should be reviewed and reworked, but on the whole I can say that it’s a quality product for the French underground band from Strasbourg.
