Le Guitariste ressemble à Side-Show Bob.

Fay

If you’re a grouch that doesn’t like long intros: just read the last five paragraphs! Still, I feel an introduction is necessary to put in perspective what my expectations were about that Whores & Black Tusk show.

My expectations

August 17th, I was writing my very first album release coverage! Since I had no clue where to begin… Google came to my help. (Most of the time, I use it to make a point… But it also did the job to find inspiration! 😉 ) And I found out that Black Tusk had released a new album on the same day.

Problem is that… Even if the name rang a bell, I felt I wasn’t familiar enough with the band to make a coverage of their album release. So, being an info freak, I set out to listen to their whole discography while I was cooking. …And to read everything I was able to find on the band. It was as if I’d been struck by lightning! (Thunderstruck, haha.) WOW, THAT BEAUTIFUL BUNCH OF HAIRY DUDES MAKING SOME GOOOOOOOD TUNES! (And their #1 music vid, Truth Untold is priceless!)

Funny enough, even before the article was published… someone tagged me on Black Tusk’s Foufounes Électriques gig. And then, some hell’s bell started ringing in my head (No, not that AC/DC bell… More like the devil’s own) My first interview ever would be with the band’s new bass player! So, I used and abused my Partner in Choc until he got me a press card… (By the way, thanks to Extensive Enterprise). So you can easily guess how high my Expectations were for that night…

Little problem though: I had neglected to get some info about the other bands on the bill… And so, I got to discover the three of them in action. Here’s what it looked like:

At first, I thought I went to the wrong show…

Venomenon Photo

As far as Venomenon, the first band, is concerned, I was wondering if they were some kind of a Venom tribute band (Venom-and-none? Nope, not Venom). All in all, I got to see an energy-filled set (maybe a little too energetic?). This ain’t a Marvel flick, guys… You ain’t superheroes. In fact, it felt more like we were in a Simpson’s episode! The guitar guy looks like Sideshow Bob. And the bassman seemed as if he were Ralfie after he ate a shitload of candies… Sadly, the audience’s level of energy just wasn’t as high.

Whitenails Photo

With the second band, Whitenails, I couldn’t help imagining the singer sitting on a bar stool, a beer in hand, or with a guitar by the campfire. I mean, the guy has the voice of a Quebecer folk singer. It sounded like some dry-drunk Eric Lapointe. I thought he looked like he was out of his element. Whatsoever, the music did sound familiar. It actually made me think of Black Sabbath with an original touch of their own.

Black Tusk Photo

Then, when Black Tusk’s time finally arrived: was CLEARLY way beyond my expectations. The crowd finally woke up; we even were treated to a moshpit! It was plain to see there was chemistry between the new bass player and the guitarist. Bonus: The new guy’s voice sounds practically as deep as his predecessor’s!

Whores Photo

Whores benefited from an already fired-up crowd! A crowd they gratified with an explosive performance! It also happened to be Mark’s birthday (the drummer), and he was given his birthday cake on stage, on which he munched unembarrassed (His mouth was covered in cake… Jood gob!). I was waiting for a political statement, from the guitar player since he had an upside down US flag on his guitar, but no!

All in all, both headliners were AWESOME! It was a great show, and both bands easily made up for the not so entertaining two opening bands. I’ve also had the pleasure of interviewing Black Tusk’s new bass player, Corey Barhorst! An interview you will be able to find on Ondes Chocs soon!
