C’est la fin de semaine du 11-12 juillet qu’avait choisi SEPULCHRAL PRODUCTIONS pour fêter leur quinzième année d’incarnation dans l’univers black metal québécois auquel ils ont amplement contribué. C’était donc fin de semaine de réjouissances et pour l’occasion, SEPULCHRAL PRODUCTIONS s’étaient assurés de 2 présences exclusives en Amérique du Nord en tant que tête d’affiche, les Anglais de FEN et les Français d’ANTAEUS. C’est accompagné d’une solide brochette de groupes de notre scène noire que ceux-ci allaient fouler les planches du Théâtre Plaza de Montréal, sanctuaire privilégié pour les rassemblements organisés par les jubilaires de la soirée que nous remercions de nous avoir accueillis si cordialement, Chris et moi-même Lex, afin de rendre compte de ce moment qui se devait d’être fortement célébré. Je me ferai donc le chroniqueur de cette première soirée qui mettait à l’affiche EXISTE, DÉLÉTÈRE, SOMBRES FORÊTS et FEN. Malheureusement, contrairement à Chris, je n’avais pas de caméra.
La soirée débutait tôt et c’est dès 19h00 qu’EXISTE est monté sur scène. Je ne les connaissais pas donc je n’avais aucune idée à quoi m’attendre et je dois dire que même pendant leur prestation, il était difficile de prévoir l’évolution de leur pièce. Un très bon point que cette variété dans les pièces même si parfois j’ai trouvé que certaines transitions étaient particulières. Ils mélangeaient souvent de belle façon des passages doom atmosphériques avec du raw black et certaines passes rock alternatif. Ils sont définitivement différents de la majorité des groupes plus typiquement black et je suis curieux de voir ce qu’ils nous réservent pour l’avenir. Les suivants, DÉLÉTÈRE de Québec n’allaient pas faire dans la variété et la finesse. Misant sur un assaut brutal et sans compromis, ils ont servi leur musique crue à une foule qui semblait cette fois plus familière avec le type d’offrandes servies. Leur musique a donc déclenché des headbangs et headmills frénétiques tant sur scène que dans la foule. Une demi-heure intense qui a passé en un clin d’oeil de même que le départ de scène de leur chanteur Thorleif dès la dernière note. Aussitôt fini aussitôt disparu. Quand je l’ai revu plus tard dans la salle, je lui ai lancé à la blague bien que je savais que sa sortie faisait partie du scénario préconisé par le groupe, «Tu ne t’es pas éternisé sur scène quand ça a fini, t’avais-tu envie?» À ma surprise il m’a répondu «Effectivement!!» Il a tout de suite enchaîné, probablement en me voyant la face, «Remarque que ça fait partie de mon approche avec DÉLÉTÈRE. Je fais les pièces et après c’est fini. Pas de social, pas de ce que je fais avec VALKNACHT. Et avec la journée qu’on a eu, ça fait du bien de juste évacuer. On est parti de Québec à 12h30 et on est rentré ici à 18h30. C’est malade!»
SOMBRES FORÊTS, que je me rappelais avoir vu et amplement apprécié l’an dernier, sont ensuite venus hypnotiser la foule avec leur musique captivante, puissante et empreinte d’une solennité que renforce leur costume de scène. De mur sonore imposant en rideau de sons diaphane, SOMBRES FORÊTS ont livré une prestation qui a encore une fois démontré leur imposante présence scénique et leur virtuosité où l’exécution d’Annatar, déployant l’archet sur sa guitare, n’en est qu’un exemple parmi d’autres. Laissant leurs chansons parlées d’elles-mêmes en s’écoulant sans interruption, ponctuées parfois de timides mais sincères remerciements par Annatar, SOMBRES FORÊTS ont emmené tous et chacun dans leur monde et je crois que plusieurs ont eu la sensation de quitter le sol le temps de ce voyage de 90 minutes.
C’était maintenant temps de faire place au trio de black progressif anglais, FEN. Une belle façon de clôturer cette soirée qui avait exploré divers recoins de l’univers black installant une atmosphère propice à une belle rencontre avec le public montréalais. Il y avait 3 musiciens qui déployaient une énergie palpable tant dans les moments plus atmosphériques que lors des attaques crust/black drette dans les dents. Je me dois de souligner encore une fois la puissance des compositions. Et tous ont apprécié, la foule saluant chaleureusement chacune de leurs pièces. The Watcher rétorquant plus d’une fois de remerciements à son tour. Ils nous ont finalement remercié une dernière fois en nous offrant comme dernier rappel une pièce qu’ils n’avaient encore jamais joué en spectacle, réclamant notre indulgence au passage. Il n’avait pas à s’en faire car l’absolution totale était sans discussion après le déploiement auquel nous avions été témoin, la foule ne réclamant que plus de leur son qui les berçait depuis plus d’une heure.

On the second night of this 15 year anniversary event promoted and organized by Montreal’s, SEPULCHRAL PRODUCTIONS, the eclectic mix of Black Metal had fans returning after the first night with as much fervor and anticipation as ever with headliners ANTAEUS, from France, certainly expecting to bombard the audience with force! Add to that special guests that prove the many subtle layers the genre has become and you’ve got an evening that’s sure to please many! A special thanks to SEPULCHRAL PRODUCTIONS for allowing me the opportunity to be on the guest list and review this occasion!
Initiating the nights proceedings, CRÉPUSCULE managed to ease the crowd into a dream-like state, enchanting the patrons with emotive segues into lengthy bouts of instrumental discord before plunging head first into lo-fi Blackened fury! With drummer and main man, Bardunor, providing most of the vocals, the band wistfully integrated some moments of reprieve in slow, brooding melodies culminating before returning to more traditional blasts. As the music doesn’t lend itself to “walls of death” or violent pits, the music captivated the audience who stood spellbound by the performance, whisked off to another plane of existence…
Physically looking like a biker gang, BEAST WITHIN might seem to those who aren’t familiar with the band to be an odd choice for this evening’s roster, but make no mistake; the set certainly separated the boys from the men! Relying on a dirty garage sound, Quebec’s own mixed sounds and simple guitar riffs that both CELTIC FROST and DARKTHRONE would be proud of, especially with the inclusion of FROST’s, “Procreation of the Wicked”! Infectious and hypnotizing, the songs on display showed a band in their prime, crafting numbers that instill headbanging and toe-tapping while keeping an aura of darkness intact! Memorable riffs and up tempo drumming made sure the audience was satisfied and with fans cheering the set, they were.
As Quebec’s CHASSE-GALERIE mounted the stage and began their uncompromising brand of Black Metal, one thing was certain; their historic and no-nonsense approach was well respected amongst the onlookers. Though, upon first listen, the band seemed to play a fuzzed out wall of noise, but hidden just beneath the surface lied intricate guitar harmonies and melodic riffs that offer more than simple tremolo picking. With instrumental number, “Requiem” and “Tourment Funebre”, it’s obvious that the band can play with the best of them, but the problem lies in their stage approach. Appearing very stoic and “statuesque”, none of the members really interacted with the crowd but instead concentrated on the instruments, the set lacked a bit of charisma overall; a trait perhaps needed to really put CHASSE-GALERIE over the top?
As dozens of fans gathered in front of the stage, FORTERESSE shirts proudly adorned, the band (also from Quebec) greeted the hall with a traditional Quebec folk intro before storming into a blitzkrieg of sonic fury! Confident and taking command, singer, Athros occupied the full stage brilliantly, stalking back and forth with ease. Meanwhile, the guitars hummed in a cold, relentless tremolo buzz, courtesy of Moribond, a member since their band’s inception in 2006. Fast and tight, the performance garnered a sea of twisted and mangled hair along with the evening’s first pit! Similar to CRÉPUSCULE in song structure, the band played lengthy instrumental odes to Quebec history, nationalism and pride in such songs as “Enfants du Lys” and “Métal Noir Québécois”. An added bonus came with surprise guest vocalist, Nordet (of BRUME d` AUTOMNE fame) who captivated onlookers even more! With the loudest fan reaction thus far, FORTERESSE absolutely proved that Black Metal in Quebec is alive and thriving!
France’s ANTAEUS, the night’s headliners, continued and ended the festivities on a high note as their militaristic take on the genre bulldozed over the audience like a tidal wave of pure force! From the opening riff and bombast, fans scampered into a tizzy of pit mayhem. With shorter songs than most of the other acts preceding, ANTAEUS’s visceral mania resulted in a “get in and get out” aesthetic. Wrapping the mic chord around his arms, cutting circulation, singer MkM, agonizingly stormed through songs, “Inner War” and “Words as Weapons” (amongst many others) as the players hectically raged through each. As imposing as the music, each member dominated their space on stage, appearing possessed by the aural wall and just as soon as the set began…it was over with MkM casually leaving the stage, followed by the others; no encore to be had. Of course, what would anyone expect from such Satanic Nihilists? Beautiful.
