On May 13th, I was heading to what used to be the Civic Center and now called the TD Place. The place was closed for the longest time and has been recently renovated into this great venue. It was pretty awesome to go back there for this evening with Volbeat, Anthrax and Crobot, presented by AEG Live Canada. I have so much great memories of that place, all the shows I saw as a kid were there. That being said, let’s get to the interesting stuff! Since I had never heard of Crobot, I really didn’t have any expectations. They took the stage with their Black Sabbath meets Black Crowes groove. Their singer Brandon Yeagley looked like he was teleported from the 70s and dropped right off on that stage. Looking around the crowd, I saw that the metalheads in the attendance had the «how the hell are these bell-bottom wearing dudes going to get us pumped up for Anthrax!?!” look on their faces. Their cool blend of psychedelic, funk and soulful heavy sound got the crowd’s juices going and quickly got them interested. The hordes made their way up to the front of the stage and the connection was made. By the end of the set, the crowd was asking for more. It was a killer performance. These dudes were nuts!!! It was a win for me!
The lights went down and out came Anthrax. The boys from New York City aren’t as young as they used to be but still pack one hell of a punch. Scott Ian was true to himself as he raced around the stage and showed his appreciation for the crowd by throwing the horns! Frank Bello’s aggressive playing was flawless as ever and at one point was crouched so low that I thought he would scrape his bass off the stage. Joey Belladonna sounded awesome and had no problem getting that crowd pumped. The fans were singing, jumping, moshing and throwing up their horns. Jon Donais fits in perfectly and was a monster. His solos were jaw dropping. Drummer Jon Dette who has worked for Slayer, Testament and Iced Earth was solid. He is currently filling in for Charlie Benante who is sidelined while recovering from carpal tunnel surgery. It was a high energy set and they delivered a performance for the ages.
Take some Rockabilly, some Mister Cash, Some King of Rock’n roll, a dash of Misfits then throw in some Metallica and you get Volbeat.
Volbeat, the band everybody was waiting for, hit the stage and the crowd went crazy before a single note was played. Volbeat‘s front man Michael Poulsen knows how to command the masses and can rock with the best of them. Bass player Anders Kjolholm was as solid as they come. Ex-Anthrax Rob Caggiano seems to be happy with his new bandmates and shreds like a monster. Drummer Jon Larsen pounded on that kit like there was no tomorrow. It was Volbeat‘s first run in the Nation’s Capital and they delivered a high energy performance and left no prisoners.
At one point, Poulsen invited a bunch of kids onstage and introduced them as the new generation of heavy metal and rock’n roll fans. These tiny boppers were throwing the horns and pumping their fists!

Le 13 mai dernier, je me dirigeais vers ce qui était auparavant le Civic Centre et est maintenant devenu la Place TD pour assister au spectacle de Volbeat, Anthrax et Crobot présenté par AEG Live Canada. Cet endroit était fermé depuis déjà longtemps mais a récemment été rénové et cette salle de spectacle est maintenant super! J’ai vraiment aimé y retourner, j’ai tellement de bons souvenirs de cet endroit, Presque tous les concerts que j’ai vus quand j’étais plus jeune, je les ai vus là. Puisque je n’avais jamais entendu parler de Crobot, je n’avais pas d’attentes préconçues. Avec un son qui ressemble à Black Sabbath rencontre le groove de Black Crowes, Brandon Yeagley, chanteur du groupe, aurait très bien pu être téléporté sur scène directement des années ’70. Un coup d’œil autour de moi confirme que les «Metalheads» sont au rendez vous, mais aussi qu’ils se demandent clairement «Comment est ce que ce groupe de Hippies avec des jeans à pattes d’éléphants vont-ils réussir à nous pomper pour Anthrax?»
Je dois admettre que leur son bien rodé – un mélange psychédélique, funk, soul, heavy – a captivé la foule et les a rapidement interpellés. Les masses se sont approchées de la scène et la connexion s’est établie. À la fin de la prestation, les fans en redemandaient. Une performance solide… Une folie contagieuse!!! Une recette gagnante à mes yeux !
Les lumières se sont éteintes, Anthrax est apparu … Les gars de New York ont peut-être un peu vieilli, mais livrent encore tout un spectacle. Scott Ian, fidèle à lui même, courait sur scène et démontrait une appréciation certaine pour la foule en affichant fièrement ses cornes! Le style agressif de Frank Bello était parfait; à un certain point, il était tellement penché que je m’attendais à voir sa précieuse basse frotter le plancher de scène. Joey Belladonna n’eut aucun problème à embarquer la foule avec son excellent vocal. Les fans chantaient, sautaient, moshaient et affichaient leur cornes dans les airs. Jon Donais fait parfaitement au sein du groupe et était grandiose, ses solos ont su impressionner. Le batteur Jon Dette qui a travaillé avec Slayer, Testament et Iced Earth était tout aussi solide. Îl remplace présentement Charlie Benante qui récupère de sa chirurgie pour réparer un tunnel carpien.
Une prestation haute en énergie , une performance pour tous âges …
Prenez du Rockabilly, Monsieur Cash, le King du Rock’n Roll, une pincée des Misfits, ensuite ajoutez librement du Metallica et vous avez Volbeat…
Volbeat, le groupe tant attendu de cette soirée, a fait son entrée en scène et la foule était en délire avant même qu’une seule note ne soit entendue. Michael Poulsen le «frontman» du groupe commande les masses et rocke au même titre que les grands de l’industrie. Anders Kjolholm, bassiste, nous a offert une prestation solide et l’ex-guitariste d’Anthrax, Rob Caggiano, semble heureux dans son nouvel environnement et livre des solos monstres. Jon Larsen attaque son drum comme s’il n’y aurait pas de lendemain.
En cette première dans la Capitale Nationale, Volbeat a offert une prestation haute en énergie et n’a laissé aucun prisonnier. Fait inusité… Poulsen a choisi d’inviter un groupe de jeunes à monter sur scène et les a présentés à la foule comme la génération future de «fans» Heavy metal et Rock’n Roll , tout un spectacle de voir ces jeunes avec les cornes et les poings haut dans les airs …
Une soirée inoubliable et définitivement à recommander! Je veux remercier AEG Live Canada pour l’accès au spectacle.
