J’ai découvert dernièrement dans la fosse aux promos de Lex, THE SILVERBLACK, un groupe de musique industrial metal de Turin (Torino) en Italie qui existe depuis environ 3 ans. En plus d’avoir des belles voitures et de la bonne bouffe là-bas, il y aurait aussi de la bonne musique. Pour ceux qui veulent un indice avant de continuer la lecture, pensez à des trucs comme The Kovenant, Pain, mais comme je l’ai dit… juste à titre d’indice. «The Grand Turmoil» est son deuxième album. Le premier album éponyme est paru en 2014.
Le groupe se dit Industrial Metal mais dans les deux premières pièces, j’ai trouvé que l’utilisation de la musicalité electro-dubstep était très forte. J’ai trouvé leur arrangement original par contre. Il y a un bel amalgame entre la voix du chanteur qui gueule et celle de la chanteuse qui a une mélodie plus pop. Ce contraste sera intéressant tout au long de l’album. La deuxième chanson, «Anymore», est celle qui m’a le plus marquée dans tout l’album. J’ai bien aimé son petit air pop electro tout en restant agressive et rythmée. C’est définitivement une pièce pour le plancher de danse.
«King-Size Vandalism» et la neuvième pièce «Great Expectations» sont des drôles de mélange d’electro et de musique punk/heavy metal. C’est excellent. On peut même entendre vers la fin des deux pièces un solo de guitare à la heavy metal des années 80. C’est vraiment excellent (ooops je me répète). La rythmique donne toujours le goût de danser, mais là il va falloir faire attention et éviter le passage de ceux qui thrasheront sur les riffs de guitare et le bombardement du drum.
«Retaliation» et «Fragmentary blue» sont des balades goth/electro qui ne sont pas sans rappeler l’atmosphère de «Spaceman» de The Kovenant. «Make it worth the Grime» et «Attic Hime» nous transportent dans un party avec blacklights et stroblights flashant.
THE SILVERBLACK a su développer une sonorité personnelle bien que parfois j’ai eu l’impression de réentendre la même musicalité dans certaines pièces. Souvent, on sent les mêmes patterns musicaux qui reviennent autant dans la section électronique, dans les voix, que dans la musicalité instrumentale. Ce n’est toutefois pas alarmant puisque l’ajout d’une voix féminine ici et là adoucit ou rend plus mélancolique les chansons. De plus, le retour du dubstep vers la fin et le fait que la musique laisse place aux instruments bien qu’elle contient beaucoup de séquences et autres artifices électroniques, contribuent à changer la dynamique des pièces.
En général, c’est une excellente découverte. Je ne suis vraiment pas fan de dubstep et je le répète souvent. Je suis toujours surprise de voir comment certains groupes réussissent à bien intégrer le genre à leur musique sans que ça me tape pas sur les nerfs. THE SILVERBLACK a réussi cet exploit avec brio. Ici, le mélange de plusieurs styles musicaux pourrait être un danger, mais c’est justement grâce à cet amalgame qu’il crée une belle sonorité unique. Cela me donne encore plus envie de les écouter et de les découvrir. Je ne me suis pas dit: «ça me fait penser à tel ou tel groupe» bien que comme je l’ai dit ça a parfois des airs de The Kovenant ou Pain. THE SILVERBLACK a réussi à créer une musique heavy, sombre et dansable que je vous recommande.

I discovered recently through another drop from Lex, THE SILVERBLACK, an Industrial Metal band from Turin (Torino), Italy, which has been around for about 3 years. Adding to hot cars and good food and wine, it seems there’s also some good music. «The Grand Turmoil» is their second album. The first album was self-titled and released in 2014. For those who want some clues before you continue reading, think about stuff like The Kovenant or Pain but as I said … just to have a clue of what you get into.
The band rates itself as Industrial Metal but in the first two songs, the use of electro-dubstep musicality was very strong. Their song arrangements were original though. There is a nice mix between the male singer’s aggressive vocals and the female singer who’s pop melodic and the contrast will be interesting throughout the album.
The second song, «Anymore» is the one I liked the most. I liked its electro pop atmosphere while remaining aggressive and rhythmic. This is definitely a song for the dance floor.
«King-Size Vandalism» and «Great Expectations» are an interesting mixture of electro and punk/heavy metal music. It’s excellent. There’s even, near the end of the two songs, a guitar solo «eighties heavy metal» style. This is really excellent I should add. Again the rhythmic will throw some of us on the dancefloor but now we’ll have to be careful and avoid the passage of those who’ll thrash on the guitar riffs and drum assault that burst through.
«Retaliation» and «Fragmentary blue» are electrogoth ballads that are reminiscent of the atmosphere of «Spaceman» by The Kovenant. «Make it worth the Grime» and «Attic Hime» bring us to a danceparty with blacklights and stroblights flashing.
THE SILVERBLACK has developed a sound of their own but at the same time, I sometimes felt that I heard the same musicality in certain songs. I felt the same musical patterns as much in the electronic or instrument parts as in the vocals, but this is not alarming because the addition of some female vocals here and there softens and pushes the songs on a more melancholic side. Furthermore, the return of dubstep towards the end of the album and the fact that the music leave space for the instruments although it contains many sequences and other electronic devices, changes the dynamics of the songs and give them their own.
In general, this album is a great discovery. I’m really not a fan of dubstep and I often repeat it. I’m alwayshappily surprised though to hear how some bands manage to integrate it well within their music so that it’s not getting on my nerves. THE SILVERBLACK has achieved this brilliantly. Here there is a mixture of many different musical styles, which could be a danger, but precisely thanks to this amalgam, they have a beautiful musical sound of their own. A good reason to listen and discover them. Throughout the whole album, I didn’t say, «it makes me think of this or that band», although as I said sometimes The Kovenant or Pain and some others come to mind. THE SILVERBLACK managed to create their own kind of music that is heavy, dark and danceable that I recommend.
