Aujourd’hui, je me suis tournée vers l’Autriche pour découvrir TEUFELSKREIS dont NRT-Records a fait reparaître l’album de 2009, «Spuren de Vergangenheit». Comme je ne les connaissais pas, j’ai été attirée par le fait qu’ils annoncent leur musique comme similaire à celle de Rammstein, Megaherz et Oomph! mais en plus heavy metal. Ça m’a intriguée, mais je dois dire que je n’ai pas vu la ressemblance ou que très vaguement. À la limite, peut-être, mais ce qui ne marche pas dans la comparaison est qu’ils ne sont pas plus heavy metal que ces groupes… ils ne sont tout simplement pas electro/industrial ou gothic. En fait, je n’ai entendu de claviers que dans «Eifersucht». Bon ok ils ont parfois la rythmique de batterie des groupes mentionnés, mais c’est pas mal tout.
Maintenant que le quiproquo identitaire est réglé, voyons ce que TEUFELSKREIS m’a offert puisque je suis aussi bien de vous en parler maintenant que j’en ai fait l’écoute. Le heavy metal, ou dans le cas présent le hard rock, n’est pas mon genre préféré. De nombreux groupes peuvent rentrer dans cette catégorie et beaucoup de groupes se ressemblent. Ici TEUFELSKREIS se démarque par le fait qu’il est resté dans sa langue et n’est pas embarqué dans le cliché «on va chanter en anglais pour pouvoir conquérir le monde». J’adore découvrir des nouveaux groupes et de pouvoir les entendre chanter dans leur langue. Les différentes sonorités du vocabulaire enrichissent la musique.
Musicalement, j’ai trouvé l’album un peu redondant. La musicalité heavy rock, peu importe le pays d’où tu viens, ça revient pas mal au même si tu n’y ajoutes rien de particulier. Par contre, ici ce n’est pas du rock du passé, c’est du hard rock commercialisable d’aujourd’hui. Il y a beaucoup de mélodies et sons qu’on a déjà entendus, qu’on aime réentendre et qu’on ne se tanne pas d’écouter.
En ce qui concerne la production, j’ai vraiment aimé entendre TOUS les instruments et ce dans toutes les pièces. J’avais à peine besoin de tendre l’oreille pour bien isoler chaque instrument et comprendre son pattern musical.
À la fin de la première écoute, j’ai été surprise d’entendre un remix «dance» de la 6ième pièce «Ein Leben Lang». C’est dommage à dire, mais si tout l’album avait été comme ça… enfin c’est à ce moment que je me suis réveillée et que j’ai eu tout à coup un intérêt certain pour une des chansons. Malheureusement, après un peu moins de quatre minutes, il était terminé.
L’album en général s’écoute bien, il n’est pas mauvais. Ce groupe mérite d’être découvert. Je crois que les fans de hard rock et de rock vont vraiment apprécier ce type de groupe et leur musique. En ce qui me concerne, c’est un album que j’écouterais sans trop porter attention, en musique de fond.

Today I discovered an Austrian band, TEUFELSKREIS, through the NRT-Records‘ reissue of its 2009 album «Spuren de Vergangenheit». As I didn’t know the band, I was attracted by the fact that their presskit announce it’s similar to the music of Rammstein, Megaherz and Oomph! but more heavy metal. It intrigued me but I must say right away I didn’t see the resemblance or maybe vaguely. There’s something that doesn’t work in the comparison. It’s not more heavy metal than these groups, the real fact is just TEUFELSKREIS is NOT electro/industrial neither gothic. In fact, the only place I heard keyboards is in «Eifersucht». Ok, they sometimes have the drum rhythmic of the mentioned groups, but that’s about it.
Now that the identity misunderstanding is settled, let’s see what TEUFELSKREIS offered me since I’ve actually listened to it. Heavy metal, or in this case hard rock is not my favorite kind of music. Many bands fit in this category and many are alike. Here, TEUFELSKREIS is distinctive by the fact that lyrics are in their mother tongue and they didn’t fall for the cliché «we will sing in English to be able to conquer the world». I love discovering foreign bands and hear them sing in their language. The sonority of a different language brings its flavor to the music.
Musically, the album is a bit redundant. The heavy rock musicality, regardless of the country where you come from, is quite the same thing if nothing remarkable is added to the mix. By cons, here that’s not rock from the past but marketable modern hard rock. There are a lot of melodies that we have already heard, that we love to hear again and and again and…
I was pleased by the production. I really enjoyed hearing ALL instruments for all songs. I hardly needed to concentrate to isolate each instrument and understand the musical pattern of each.
At the end of my first listen, I was surprised to hear a «dance» remix for «Ein Leben Lang». It’s a shame to say but if the whole album was like that… well at least this one sparked a real boost of interest for one of these songs. Unfortunately, after just under four minutes, it was over.
The album in general is a good listen, it’s not bad but doesn’t stand out. Still this band deserves to be discovered. I think fans of hard rock and rock should enjoy it but for me, this is an album that fits in the category of easy listenable background music, the kind I won’t put on but that will be ok if it comes out of the speakers.
