Since their inception in 2001 with their demo, « Voice of Prophecy« , Russian Death Metal act, TACIT FURY has relocated to Moscow and revamped their sound and direction. Initially melting desperate hearts with atmospheric Doom/Death, the trio has decided to steer the ship into more streamlined, pure Death Metal waters. Latest album to show this renewed sense of purpose, « A Social Berserker » certainly hears angst and frustration but is it worthy of high accolades?
Gargling vocals and chuggy guitars open the album in « Lacerated, Strangled, Impaled » complete with proficient solo to end the number before « Run While You Can » continues the attack, this time incorporating more blast beats and politically charged lyrics. TACIT FURY indeed execute with conviction but tend to blend into the «Death Metal fabric» when the tension reaches full on blasting. Album closer, « War Against All Living » exemplifies this when it’s in «hot rage».
Slower, churning rhythms showcase the band’s ability to pen truly memorable songs. « Release the Lions« , for instance, reveals a catchy lead riff and chorus promising to be a fan favorite live with shouts of « Sacrifice » cascading over ears! « Chronology Bleached » also slows the proceedings down just enough to differentiate the Russian from the pack! Again, lush solos maintain a high standard of musicianship that harks back to 80’s Thrash. « The Saw Wheel of Fortune » actually sounds similar to Carcass when the riffs intricately deviate from minimalist crunch.
Very well produced, « A Social Berserker » is a nice, crisp sounding record with a lot of metallic highs and soaring leads make this album worth checking out. Although, TACIT FURY manage to sound like many other bands in the genre, when they veer off the generic course, they really have what it takes to breathe new life into Extreme Metal. Song ideas that compel headbanging with raised horns guarantee the Russians a bright future IF they decide to minimize the influence of so many others of this ilk.
