SPIRIT OF THE FOREST est une des formations pionnières du Black Metal atmosphérique au Québec, ayant été fondée dès 2005 à Montréal. Après deux premiers efforts montrant une évolution vers une musique plus travaillée et élaborée, le quatuor récidivait fin 2016, avec un troisième opus complet en carrière. J’étais donc curieux de savoir, lorsque vint le moment de faire ma première écoute de ladite galette, si la formation allait poursuivre son évolution vers un Black Metal plus progressif et élaboré.
Je fus donc heureux de constater un premier signe que cette évolution se poursuivait en consultant la liste des pièces et les paroles de ce nouvel album. En effet, pour la première fois de son histoire SPIRIT OF THE FOREST nous présente des compositions francophones. En fait, l’album se divise en une première moitié anglophone et une seconde moitié francophone. Le fait de mélanger les deux langues est parfois risqué, car cela peut briser la continuité d’un opus, mais cette fois SPIRIT OF THE FOREST remporte son pari en ayant justement divisé l’album en deux parties complémentaires et Phobetor (guitares, paroles) y démontre un talent égal pour écrire et en anglais et en français. Lucyber (Chant) nous y fait aussi la démonstration que son vocal râpeux est aussi efficace dans une langue que dans l’autre.
Mon second constat concernant l’évolution de SPIRIT OF THE FOREST sur cet album est le caractère encore plus aéré et élaboré qu’auparavant des compositions qui y sont présentées. Cela nous permet d’apprécier pleinement les mélodies de guitare d’Ekinox (guitares, basse, claviers, chant) et Phobetor, ainsi que leurs superbes solos tranchants ponctuant les pièces d’un caractère épique indéniable. Auster, à la batterie, nous fait aussi pleinement démonstration de son talent immense avec une performance impeccable et variée. De plus, pour la première fois, SPIRIT OF THE FOREST a bénéficié de la collaboration de Doom Berden (Hiverna, Crépuscule) à la flûte, qui rajoute beaucoup au caractère atmosphérique et épique de l’album. Enfin, la production, oeuvre d’Ekinox, est très bien balancée et moderne tout en ayant un petit côté sale typiquement Black Metal. Mon seul bémol est que la basse y manque parfois un peu de présence, ce qui est paradoxal puisqu’Ekinox y excelle à faire des lignes «groovys» qui rajoutent une troisième ligne mélodique entre les guitares.
En conclusion, avec «A Void into the Fields of Silence/La nature oubliée», SPIRIT OF THE FOREST nous offre en quelque sorte son magnum opus, c’est-à-dire son album jusqu’ici le plus élaboré et le plus réussi. Cela n’est pas peu dire compte tenu de la grande qualité de ses deux albums précédents. Il s’agit donc d’un incontournable dans les sorties Black Metal de 2016 et le restera aussi assurément pour 2017!
À consommer d’un bout à l’autre sans modération! 9/10

SPIRIT OF THE FOREST is one of the pioneering formations of Atmospheric Black Metal in Quebec, founded in 2005 in Montreal. After two first efforts showing an evolution towards a more worked and elaborate music, the quartet was back at the end of 2016, with a third full length in career. So I was curious to know, when it came time to make my first listening, if the formation would continue its evolution towards a Black Metal more progressive and elaborate.
I was therefore pleased to note a first sign that this evolution was continuing by consulting the list of songs and the lyrics of this new album. Indeed, for the first time in its history SPIRIT OF THE FOREST presents french compositions. In fact, the album splits into an English first half and a French second half. Mixing the two languages is sometimes risky, because it can break the continuity of an album, but this time SPIRIT OF THE FOREST wins its bet by having divided the album into two complementary parts and Phobetor (guitars, lyrics) demonstrates an equal talent for writing in both English and French. Lucyber (vocal) also demonstrates that his raspy vocal is as effective in one language as in the other.
My second observation concerning the evolution of SPIRIT OF THE FOREST on this album is the character even more airy and elaborated than before of the compositions that are presented here. This allows us to fully appreciate the guitar melodies of Ekinox (guitars, bass, keyboards, vocals) and Phobetor, as well as their superb sharp solos punctuating the songs of an undeniable epic character. Auster, on drums, is also fully demonstrating his immense talent with an impeccable and varied performance. Moreover, for the first time, SPIRIT OF THE FOREST benefited from the collaboration of Doom Berden (Hiverna, Crépuscule) playing the flute, which adds much to the atmospheric and epic character of the album. Finally, the production done by Ekinox is very well balanced and modern while having a small dirty side typically Black Metal. My only downside is that the bass sometimes is not present enough, which is paradoxical since Ekinox excels there to perform groovy lines that add a third melodic line between the guitars.
In conclusion, with «A Void into the Fields of Silence/La nature oubliée», SPIRIT OF THE FOREST offers us in a way its magnum opus, that is to say its album so far the most elaborate and the most successful. This is no small saying given the high quality of its previous two albums. It is therefore a must in the Black Metal releases of 2016 and will also remain so for 2017!
To consume from start to end without moderation! 9/10
