Mike Usifer (guitare) et Andy Eichhorn (voix) ont décidé en 2010, après un arrêt de dix-huit ans, qu’il était temps de repartir PRIME EVIL qui avait thrashé de 1984 à 1992, époque qui avait vu la sortie de trois démos et un single. Le retour a été suivi du EP «Evilution» (2012). Le groupe new-yorkais a finalement sorti en juin son premier album complet en carrière, «Blood Curse Resurrection». Bon, les plus rigoureux vont dire qu’il a moins de 30 minutes et que, dans ce cas, ce n’est pas un pleine longueur mais je répliquerai qu’il contient tout de même dix pièces originales.
Dans la foulée des comebacks et de la prolifération de groupes de metal de tout acabit et provenance, il est intéressant de voir si le retour de PRIME EVIL a la moindre pertinence et apportera de l’eau au moulin ou s’il ne fait pas que profiter de la vague de sympathie existante de nos jours envers les groupes de l’époque originelle.
Vous voyez que j’avais des attentes, et sûrement que les fans de la première heure en ont plus que moi. Ils seront alors surpris de constater que le son a délaissé le thrash et évolué vers le death metal même s’il garde tout de même sa part de riffs thrash et de solos à l’emporte-pièce lancés à l’improviste. En tout cas, cette évolution montre que PRIME EVIL ne fait pas que surfer la vague mais ça lui fait du même coup de grandes bottes à chausser d’arriver avec un premier album pleine longueur en carrière dans un son qui diffère de ce auquel ils nous avaient habitués.
Je peux dire que PRIME EVIL réussit très bien le pari avec cet album. Dès le début de «Blood Curse», l’arrivée différée des instruments donne le ton, permettant de bien sentir chacun dans le mix et, plaisir additionnel, la chanson s’emballe avec à peu près tout ce que j’aime du death metal. Par la suite, sans dérougir tout au long de l’album, on aura des compositions lourdes et variées qui ne chercheront jamais à imposer un truc qui ne colle pas.
Depuis le début, je me dis que le vocal a une tendance à ressembler à Schuldiner. Or, c’est avec «Blacken The Sun» que mon impression du groupe culte Death est la plus forte. Vous pouvez toutefois oublier la tendance actuelle qui consiste à sonner comme un tribute au old school en reprenant soit le son ou les riffs (ou les deux) de groupe fétiche puisque PRIME EVIL trouve le moyen d’être original en restant cohérent et pertinent à leur style, sans chercher à faire des trucs techdeath ou deathcore. Ils mêlent efficacement les passes mid-tempo groovy avec les blast beats et, en plus d’avoir aussi un côté progressif, ils construisent des pièces qui nous accrochent plus par les structures que par la pure brutalité. C’est au niveau des refrains que j’ai senti qu’ils ont bien travaillé leurs structures mélodiques, ceux-ci restent en tête rapidement et devraient aisément être repris en choeur par la foule en spectacle. Soyez avertis: le headbanging est continuel, pas de temps morts ici. Toutes les pièces sont fortes.
Si vous avez aimé les débuts du death metal, quand le style incorporait encore une bonne dose de riffs thrash et de solos à l’emporte-pièce dans un esprit Slayeresque, je crois que «Blood Curse Resurrection» doit se retrouver dans votre collection. C’est définitivement un excellent album.

Mike Usifer (guitar) and Andy Eichhorn (vocal) decided in 2010, after an eighteen years break, it was time to bring back the thrash entity PRIME EVIL, and add some more to their discography of three demos and a single released between 1984-1992. The return was followed by the EP «Evilution» (2012). The New York group finally issued in June its first complete album, «Blood Curse Resurrection». Well, the most strict critics will say it has less than 30 minutes and in this case it is not a full length but I shall reply that it still contains ten original compositions which for me is enough.
In the wake of all the comebacks and the proliferation of Metal bands of all kinds and origin, it is interesting to see if the return of PRIME EVIL has any relevance and will bring water to the mill or if they just try to surf on the sympathy wave existing today towards the groups of the original era.
You can feel I set the bar high for PRIME EVIL and I hope they will walk the walk, especially since it is their first full length album.
Well forget about surfing on nostalgic fame, I can say that PRIME EVIL cleared the bar cleanly with this album considering that they also challenge the fans of the first hour who will be surprised that the sound has evolved from Thrash Metal to Death Metal though still keeping its share of thrash riffs and out of nowhere guitar solos.
Right from the start «Blood Curse» set the tone with the delayed arrival of the instruments which allows me to feel them well in the mix and to my delight, it brings in about everything I love in Death Metal. Thereafter, without slowing the pace throughout the album, there will be heavy and varied compositions without trying to do things that do not fit.
From the beginning, the voice had a tendency to sound like Schuldiner and it is with «Blacken The Sun» that my impression of the cult band Death got the strongest. However, don’t think they follow the current trend to sound like a «tribute to old school» by taking either the sound or the riffs (or both) of fetish group, PRIME EVIL finds a way to be original though remaining consistent and relevant to the style without tipping into Techdeath or Deathcore.
As true death was done, it relies on wicked melodic twist more than brutal linear aggression. The structures and rythms of choruses are also well worked so they rapidly stay in mind and become sing along parts. Their songs mix very well groovy mid-tempo parts with furious blast beats counterparts while blending at time in a progressive approach. Be warned: The headbanging is non-stop. No down time here. All songs are dynamite.
If you liked the beginnings of death metal when it incorporated a healthy dose of thrash riffs and psychotic frenetic out of nowhere solos (in a Slayeresque way), I think «Blood Curse Resurrection» should be in your collection. This is definitely a great album.
