Critique d’album: Obituary – Dying Of Everything (Janvier 2023)

Fondé en 1988, Obituary est un band Death Metal légendaire de la région de Tampa en Floride. Ville reconnue pour nous avoir donné des groupes comme Deicide, Death et Morbid Angel parmi tant d’autres. John Tardy est toujours à la voix ainsi que son frère Donald à la batterie, tous deux membres fondateurs depuis 1984 avec le groupe Xecutioner. Trevor Peres, aussi membre fondateur et compositeur principale s’occupe des rythmes guitares tandis que Kenny Andrews est au lead guitare depuis 2014. Terry Butler occupe le poste de bassiste depuis 2010, il avait d’ailleurs joué la basse sur l’album Spiritual Healing du groupe Death en 1990.

Dying of Everything est un album hautement anticipé pour les amateurs de la scène Old School Death Metal de Tampa, FL. Les fans ne seront pas déçus puisque c’est un album qui nous ramène au son qu’on a connu sur les incontournables Slowly We Rot (1989) et Cause of Death (1990) mais avec un son moderne.

Produit pas Joe Singada et enregistré dans leur propre studio qu’ils ont construit en 2007 pour l’enregistrement de Xecutioners Return. L’artiste qui a contribué à la pochette de l’album, Mariusz Lewandowski, est un Polonais qui a travaillé avec plusieurs dizaines d’autres artistes dans le genre de metal extrême. Il est d’ailleurs décédé le 20 juillet 2022. Ça vaut la peine d’aller voir ces œuvres.

Dying of Everything est leur 11ième album studio distribué par Relapse Records. Ils ont aussi cinq albums live et un album split en 1992 sur Roadrunner Records.

La première piste, Barely Alive nous emmène immédiatement dans le monde d’Obituary des années 80s. Pas d’intro et pas de fla fla, l’album commence comme un coup de masse. La piste la plus courte, mais avec un tempo accéléré et brutal jumelé avec la voix familière et incontournable d’Obituary. Servi de deux solos à la Ken Andrews avec des dive bombs et whammy bar inclus.

The Wrong Time est le premier single de l’album qui est d’ailleurs accompagné d’un vidéoclip officiel. Composé principalement par Ken Andrews, il nous présente un rythme mid tempo. Le solo de guitare est composé de multiples dive bombs classiques qui vont très bien avec l’ambiance de la piste.

Without a Conscience me fait penser a du Celtic Frost avec un beat plus lent et pesant. Vers les 2 minutes dans la piste on a le droit à un breakdown syncopé de chug accrocheur. War commence avec un sample de scène de guerre pour nous mettre en contexte et tranquillement les guitares, la basse et le drum entrent pour nous donner un groove d’attaque. Un crescendo qui cumule pour nous donner une atmosphère effrayante qui est la guerre.

Dying of Everthing est le deuxième single de l’album qui est accompagné d’un vidéoclip audio nous annonçant la sortie de l’album le 13 janvier. Un tempo rapide d’attaque composé principalement par Ken Andrews. On a droit à deux solos de guitares mélodieux.

Accompagné d’un lyric vidéo, My Will to Live est le troisième single de l’album. Quand même 5:17 minutes avec un ton plus pesant et lent, mais tout au plus agressif. Pour cette track, pas de solo compliqué, seulement une petite passe de wah wah. Une track remplie de chug qui donne une atmosphère puissante et solide pour satisfaire le headbanger en vous.

By The Dawn débute doucement suivi de guitare galopant ensuite la voix de John embarque pour nous donner l’atmosphère diabolique de la piste. Les riffs simples, les harmonies et les breakdowns sont tous solides. Solo de guitare simple placé plutôt au début de la piste qui emmène un air différent.

Weaponize the Hate ouvre avec un growl plus sombre. La track est composé principalement de deux bons riffs solides avec de petites variantes. L’énergie est haute et les breakdowns sont multipliés dans cette piste.

Torn Apart est plus sombre avec des chugs gallopants. La structure est simple mais très efficace pour nous donner la sensation de perdre la tête, qui est le thème de cette piste. Be Warned est la piste parfaite pour clore l’album avec son tempo lent et diabolique. Très doom comme atmosphère à la Autopsy. La plus longue piste de l’album.

Ceci est un album de dix pistes pour un total de 44 minutes qui s’écoute comme on écoute un vinyle, du début à la fin sans sauter de pistes. Toutes les pistes sont bonnes ayant chacune sa saveur particulière.

Très bien produit et mixé. Les instruments sont bien définis dans le mix, mais toujours avec l’atmosphère sale et sloppy qu’est Obituary. L’album est disponible sur les plateformes digitales, en CD et treize différents types de vinyles dont plusieurs sont déjà sold out. N’oublions pas, aussi en format cassette, pour les collectionneurs. Obituary sont présentement en tournée en Allemagne pour terminer en février au Royaume-Uni. On attend toujours des dates pour la tournée Nord-Américaine.

Founded in 1988, Obituary is a legendary Death Metal band from the Tampa, Florida area. City known for giving us bands like Deicide, Death and Morbid Angel among many others. John Tardy is still on vocals as well as his brother Donald on drums, both founding members since 1984 with the group Xecutioner. Trevor Peres, also a founding member and main composer, takes care of the guitar rhythms while Kenny Andrews has been on lead guitar since 2014. Terry Butler has been the bassist since 2010, he had also played bass on the album Spiritual Healing of the group Death in 1990.

Dying of Everything is a highly anticipated album for fans of Tampa, FL’s Old School Death Metal scene. Fans will not be disappointed since it is an album that brings us back to the sound we knew on the essential Slowly We Rot (1989) and Cause of Death (1990) but with a modern sound.

Produced by Joe Singada and recorded in their own studio which they built in 2007 for the recording of Xecutioners Return. The artist who contributed the album cover, Mariusz Lewandowski, is a Pole who has worked with several dozen other artists in the extreme metal genre. He also died on July 20, 2022. It is worth going to see these works.

The first track, Barely Alive immediately takes us into the 80s world of Obituary. No intro and no fla fla, the album begins as a blow of mass. The shortest track, but with an accelerated and brutal tempo paired with the familiar and unmistakable voice of Obituary. Served with two solos like Ken Andrews with dive bombs and whammy bar included.

The Wrong Time is the first single from the album, which is accompanied by an official music video. Composed mainly by Ken Andrews, it presents us with a mid-tempo rhythm. The guitar solo is made up of multiple classic dive bombs that go really well with the vibe of the track.

Without a Conscience reminds me of Celtic Frost with a slower and heavier beat. Around 2 minutes into the track we have the right to a syncopated breakdown of catchy chug. War starts with a sample of a war scene to put us in context and quietly the guitars, bass and drums come in to give us an attack groove. A crescendo that accumulates to give us a frightening atmosphere that is war.

Dying of Everthing is the second single from the album which is accompanied by an audio clip announcing the release of the album on January 13th. A fast tempo attack composed mainly by Ken Andrews. We are entitled to two melodious guitar solos.

Accompanied by a video lyric, My Will to Live is the third single from the album. Still 5:17 minutes with a heavier and slower tone, but at most aggressive. For this track, no complicated solo, only a little wah wah pass. A track filled with chug that gives a powerful and solid atmosphere to satisfy the headbanger in you.

By The Dawn begins softly followed by galloping guitar then the voice of John embarks to give us the devilish atmosphere of the track. The simple riffs, harmonies and breakdowns are all solid. Simple guitar solo placed rather at the beginning of the track which brings a different air.

Weaponize the Hate opens with a darker growl. The track is mainly composed of two good solid riffs with small variations. The energy is high and the breakdowns are multiplied in this track.

Torn Apart is darker with galloping chugs. The structure is simple but very effective in giving us the feeling of losing our minds, which is the theme of this track. Be Warned is the perfect track to close the album with its slow and devilish tempo. Very doom like atmosphere like Autopsy. The longest track on the album.

This is a ten-track album for a total of 44 minutes that can be listened to like listening to vinyl, from beginning to end without skipping tracks. All tracks are good, each with its own flavor.

Very well produced and mixed. The instruments are well defined in the mix, but still with the dirty and sloppy atmosphere that is Obituary. The album is available on digital platforms, on CD and thirteen different types of vinyl, many of which are already sold out. Let’s not forget, also in cassette format, for collectors. Obituary are currently on tour in Germany, finishing in February in the UK. We are still waiting for dates for the North American tour.
