Critique d’album: Midnightmares – Shadow People (21 octobre 2024)

Le groupe belge/mexicain Midnightmares arrive en force avec leur premier album en carrière intitulé « Shadow People ». Cet opus est sorti sous le label Gio Smet Records le 21 octobre 2024. Mélangeant un style de metal symphonique et gothic, Midnightmares arrive en force afin de nous présenter un metal présentant une voix style opéra tout en harmonisant le tout avec un growl hors du commun.

Formé en 2023, le groupe nous apporte dans leur univers propre à eux avec les différentes pièces suggérées. Mixant le chant d’opéra de Mariel Gimeno et la voix guttural de Giovanni Smet, Midnightmares offre des chansons bien structurées à la touche gothique qui nous rappellent les bonnes vieilles années des groupes mythiques de ce style tels que : Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation, etc.

Pendant plus d’une heure, Midnightmares nous fait passer par plusieurs gammes d’émotions. Parfois mélancolique, parfois agressif, les différentes chansons proposées s’harmonisent à perfection avec le style gothique. Le clavier et la voix style opéra ont été un point fort sur cet album qui m’a totalement émerveillé. Les pièces « Leave Me With My Demons » et « Shadow People » ont été sans aucun doute mes coups de cœur. Par moment, nous croyons écouter le frère jumeau d’Epica puisque ce groupe propose aussi ce mix de voix.

En conclusion, cet album m’a fait redécouvrir ce style que j’avais délaissé dernièrement. Même si le groupe est seulement composé de deux membres, nous avons l’impression de faire face à plusieurs musiciens en même temps. Chaque instrument est bien joué et nous démontre le potentiel du groupe. Le groupe s’est produit en spectacle pour la première fois le 5 octobre dernier au GioFest.

The Belgian/Mexican band Midnightmares arrives in force with their first album in their career entitled « Shadow People« . This opus has been released under the label Gio Smet Records on October 21, 2024. Mixing a style of symphonic and gothic metal, Midnightmares arrives in force to present us with a metal featuring an opera-style voice while harmonizing everything with an extraordinary growl.

Formed in 2023, the band brings us into their own universe with the different suggested pieces. Mixing the opera singing of Mariel Gimeno and the guttural voice of Giovanni Smet, Midnightmares offers well-structured songs with a gothic touch that remind us of the good old years of the legendary bands of this style such as: Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation, etc.

For more than an hour, Midnightmares takes us through several ranges of emotions. Sometimes melancholic, sometimes aggressive, the different songs offered harmonize perfectly with the gothic style. The keyboard and the opera-style vocals were a strong point on this album that totally amazed me. The pieces « Leave Me With My Demons » and « Shadow People » were without a doubt my favorites. At times, we think we are listening to Epica’s twin brother since this group also offers this mix of vocals.

In conclusion, this album made me rediscover this style that I had recently neglected. Even if the group is only composed of two members, we have the impression of facing several musicians at the same time. Each instrument is well played and shows us the potential of the group. The group performed for the first time on October 5, 2024 at GioFest.
