Ohhhhhh!! Si vous cherchez quelque chose de pesant, je crois que c’est ici que votre quête se termine.
«The Felon’s Claw» le quatrième album du groupe états-unien ILSA vient de tomber dans mes oreilles et il a tellement le son downtuné que ça n’a quasiment pas de sens. J’ai l’impression d’entendre la membrane du subwoofer des hauts-parleurs vibrer comme lorsqu’elle est déchirée. Pourtant, c’est vraiment parfait et ça ajoute une facette particulière à sa musique qui n’est pas très compliquée et s’appuie beaucoup sur la rythmique.
«Oubliette» débute l’album pesamment, tranquillement puis enchaîne avec un beat Crust, et je le répète… Le son est tellement gras et pesant. La seule chose aigüe est le vocal écorché d’Orion.
«25 Cromwell» nous amène du côté Doom de leur style.
Les deux premières pièces permettent d’entrevoir l’étendue de leur registre qui navigue entre le Doom et le Crust mais il se passera également plein d’autres choses dans cet album dont une maudite bonne dose de gros rock sale.
«Pandolpho» est la plus catchy avec sa première partie stoner rock qui donne le goût de se branler la tête et les fesses au rythme de la musique mais comme pour toutes leurs compositions rien ne dure et elle évolue vers un Doom totalement déchiré et dépressif rehaussé par les cris d’agonie d’Orion.
Le début de «Enter the Void» m’a fait penser à «Troops of Tomorrow» (originalement composée par The Vibrators mais probablement plus connue pour la reprise que The Exploited en a faite) dans sa rythmique de batterie mais également par son côté répétitif et hypnotisant.
Que ce soit dans les moments les plus lents ou dans les plus rapides de leurs compositions, la tonalité est parfaite et permet de bien suivre les instruments même si à la première écoute, on les perd dans le faux-fondu créé par l’édition et le mixage des pièces.
L’album se termine avec la pièce la plus groovy du lot et bien que répétitive, elle fait la job car elle a un petit côté catchy.
L’univers d’ILSA est glauque à souhait et la production finale de sa musique sert très bien cet univers. D’ailleurs afin de mieux sentir cet univers glauque, j’ai recherché le sens du titre de certaines compositions qui m’intriguaient et, pour ceux que ça intéresse….
– «25 Cromwell» est l’adresse du couple de psychopathes Fred et Rose West qui ont assassiné, démembré et enterré au sous-sol neuf personnes;
– «Armstrong’s mixture» est un explosif hautement réactif à base de phosphore et chlorate de potassium;
– «Katabasis» or catabasis (from Greek κατὰ «down» and βαίνω «go») peut-être interprêté comme une déchéance ou une descente aux Enfers;
– «Pandolpho» est une adaptation de la chanson «Pour Down You Powers Divine» de Robert Parsons écrite au XVIème siècle qui raconte les tourments du personnage central de la chanson Pandolpho…
Je termine en vous suggérant de donner une chance à ILSA si vous êtes un fan de Doom et de Crust à la Amebix mais également si vous aimez le type de son que Crowbar ou Bolt Thrower nous offrent. Depuis, le groupe a sorti un split avec Coffins et il aura une pièce exclusive sur le cd promo du prochain Decibel Magazine. Je vous en parlerai peut-être mais faites-vous donc votre propre idée.

«The Felon’s Claw», the fourth album of the US group ILSA just fell in my ears and it sound is so much downtuned that it hit you right in the guts. It feels like subwoofers skin vibrates like when torn. Yet it is really perfect as it adds a dark gloomy aura on the music.
«Oubliette» starts the album heavily but slowly before exploding in a Crust beat, and I repeat it… The sound is so low and heavy. The only thing that is high pitch is Orion‘s vocals.
«25 Cromwell» leads us on the Doom side of ILSA‘s music.
The first two songs shows the extent of their musical range which sails between Doom and Crust but ILSA also offers a good dose of greasy dirty rock.
«Pandolpho» is the catchiest one with its beginning in a stoner rock fashion making me headbang slowly to the rhythm of music but as for all the compositions on this album, nothing lasts and it evolves into a Doom completely depressive and tortured enhanced by Orion‘s screams of agony.
The beginning of «Enter the Void» reminded me «Troops of Tomorrow» (originally composed by The Vibrators but probably best known for the cover made by The Exploited) in its drum line, but also by its repetitive hypnotizing side.
Whether in the slower or the fastest parts of their compositions, the tone is perfect and though at first listen I felt I was losing instruments in the mix, it just fell in place after a couple more listenings.
The album ends with the grooviest song of the lot and although repetitive, it did the job with its little catchy side.
Their universe is dark and gloomy, and the sound of their music darkens it. This gloomy feeling got me curious and I sought the meaning of the title of some compositions that intrigued me, and for those interested….
– «25 Cromwell » is where lived the couple of psychopaths, Fred and Rose West, who murdered, dismembered and buried nine persons in its basement;f
– «Armstrong’s mixture» is a highly reactive explosive composed on phosphorus and potassium chlorate;
– «Katabasis» or catabasis (from Greek κατὰ «down» and βαίνω «go») may be interpreted as a fall or a descent to Hell;
– «Pandolpho» is an adaptation of Robert Parsons‘ song, «Pour Down You Powers Divine», written in the sixteenth century which tells the torment of Pandolpho, the main character of the song.
I conclude by suggesting that you give a chance to ILSA if you are a fan of Doom and Crust like Amebix and also if you like the type of sound Crowbar and Bolt Thrower offer. Since this album, ILSA released a split with Coffins and it will have an exclusive song on the next Decibel Magazine‘s promotion CD. I might talked to you again about ILSA but I suggest you get your own idea about ILSA with the bandcamp player accompanying this text.
