Quand j’ai reçu le nouvel album de FINSTERFORST, je me suis dit que j’étais pour écouter ça tout de suite puisque le groupe allemand mentionnait que c’était l’album qu’il avait toujours voulu faire et après avoir écouté l’extrait sur youtube, je me préparais pour un beau petit voyage. J’étais toutefois surpris et inquiet de voir sur la pochette que le viking était passé au sombre royaume et avait été remplacé dans la lumière par un hipster qui aurait été plus à sa place sur un album de LMFAO.
Mon inquiétude prémonitoire s’est rapidement confirmée en certitude et l’album n’a réussi à garder mon attention que le temps des deux premières pièces. Ensuite, c’est devenu un peu n’importe quoi avec des covers qui minent l’atmosphère de l’album. Je ne crois pas que la reprise de «Beat It» amène quoi que ce soit et encore moins «Wild Rover» dont je me souviens de la version par The Pogues qui était beaucoup plus pertinente et juste comme ça, sans l’accent irlandais, ça perd de son charme. Et sérieusement, «Wrecking Ball» de Miley Cyrus…
J’imagine que l’idée de faire ce genre d’album a pu paraître bonne quelque part dans un bureau mais je suis désolé, je n’ai pas accroché. Pourquoi prendre la peine d’en parler? Tout simplement parce que c’est décevant de voir des vétérans faire un album aussi quelconque. Aucune des reprises ne porte vraiment la touche de FINSTERFORST et les chansons originales sont ordinaires à part les deux premières qui sont entraînantes surtout «Bottle Gods» à cause de la présence de la trompette et de l’accordéon principalement.

When I received the new FINSTERFORST album, I thought I was to listen to it right away because the German group states that it is the album they always wanted to do and after listening to the extract on youtube, I was preparing myself for a nice little trip since it sounded like what I heard on «Mach Dich Frei». I was however surprised and a bit concerned to see on the album cover that the Viking moved down to the Dark Kingdom and had been replaced in the light by a hipster who would have been better of on an album of LMFAO.
My concern about the signification of the presence of this creep on the sleeve was quickly confirmed and the album only managed to keep my attention for the first two songs. Then it became a little like listening to karaoke with covers that undermine the atmosphere of the album. I do not think the cover of «Beat It» brings anything to music in general, much less «Wild Rover» of which I remember the version by The Pogues which was much more relevant and just like that, without an Irish accent, it loses its charm. And seriously, Miley Cyrus‘ «Wrecking Ball»…
I guess the idea of this kind of album looked appealing in some office but I’m sorry, I have not been hooked. Why bother to talk about it then? Just because it is disappointing to hear such an album. None of the covers really carry the FINSTERFORST vibe and the original songs are ordinary and could be left over tracks from «Mach Dich Frei» but still I liked the first two, especially the catchy «Bottle Gods».
