Le groupe montréalais DEATHBRINGER n’a pas mis de temps avant de sortir son premier enregistrement puisqu’il s’est formé en 2015 et que cet opus est paru en juin 2016. Cette rapidité est d’autant plus surprenante puisqu’il donnait la responsabilité des textes et du chant à un novice qui y allait de ses premiers pas. J’étais donc curieux d’entendre cet EP.
Après une intro qui nous donne l’impression d’entrer dans un monde glauque et dément, «By The Will of God» explose en une charge de Nuclear Black Metal à la rythmique martiale qui ne dure pas et sombre dans un Blackened Doom crasseux. Déjà je peux constater que toutes mes questions concernant le vocal ont leur réponse. La variété proposée et l’utilisation des effets sert très bien la proposition vocale qui se veut tout aussi inquiétante qu’obsédante. Après la rage Black Metal alimentée de scream aigus, on sent bien le désespoir frisant la folie portée par l’effet d’échos psychédéliques dans la voix. Une belle façon de rendre les états d’âmes véhiculés par les paroles suicidaires de la pièce.
Quand «Fathered by the Warhead» a commencé et que j’ai entendu ce cri, je crois que Tom G. Warrior aurait approuvé et se serait lancé dans l’interprétation de «Triumph of Death». Si le début nous garde dans la rythmique Doom de cette pièce avec un vocal modifié assez semblable, elle incorpore quelques mesures plus Stoner avant de retourner au Black Crust corrosif de «By The Will of God».
Après deux pièces, il est évident que leur musique puise à même la veine originelle de la musique sombre bien servie par une production brute et crue qui gardent les cordes incisives et corrosives alors que la batterie est organique le tout plongé dans les échos et la réverbération. DEATHBRINGER possède un arsenal varié de brutalité qui sert très bien son côté malsain. DEATHBRINGER, c’est mauvais, féroce et méchamment tourmenté avec une certaine vision nihiliste. Même «Bone Weaver», qui se veut plus amicale(!?) en nous lançant d’entrée des beats vaguement dansant transportés par une rythmique qui n’est pas sans rappeler le Grunge, deviendra caustique avec son déferlement Black Metal qui nous mènera au final du EP à ces deux mots, «My Hate», qui caractérisent si bien l’émotion qui sous-tend cette musique.
J’ai mentionné Tom G. Warrior. Son aura sera omniprésente tout au long de mon écoute. Écoutez le début de «Bourreau des martyrs» qui ne pourra faire autrement que de vous faire penser à «Dethroned Emperor» de Celtic Frost. Je ne dis pas ici que DEATHBRINGER ne fait pas que copier le style mais plutôt embrasse cette attitude Crust/Punk qui colorait les premiers albums du légendaire compositeur suisse alors que se profilaient les premiers balbutiements de ce qui allait mener à l’apparition du Black et du Death Metal. Ça crée une belle variété grâce à l’utilisation de genres différents quoique complémentaires pour tisser cette trame poisseuse où la morbidité est un état de grâce permanent enveloppant ces cinq titres sulfureux.
Définitivement, pour un premier jet, DEATHBRINGER frappe fort avec «From Silence Was Born The Sound of Death» et devrait laisser une impression durable.

The Montreal group DEATHBRINGER did not take a long time to release its first recording since it was formed in 2015 and this opus appeared in June 2016. This quickness is all the more surprising since Étienne (vocal) was at his first step as frontman and had to integrate these new duties. So I was curious to hear this EP.
After an intro that gives us the impression of entering a gloomy and mad world, «By The Will of God» explodes in a Nuclear Black Metal charge fueled by the martial rhythmic that will collapse in a dark and dirty Blackened Doom. Already I can hear that all my questions concerning the vocal have their answer. The proposed variety and the use of the effects serve very well the vocal proposal which is just as worrying as obsessive. After the Black Metal rage with screams, I felt the desperation woven in madness carried by the effect of psychedelic echoes in the vocal. A beautiful way to portray the state of mind conveyed by the suicidal lyrics of the song.
When «Fathered by the Warhead» started, I believe Tom G. Warrior would have approved this scream and would have embarked on the interpretation of «Triumph of Death». If the beginning keeps us in the Doom rhythm of the said song with a modified vocal pretty similar, it incorporates some more Stoner measures before returning to the corrosive Black Crust Metal.
After two songs, it is obvious that their music taps in the original vein of the dark music, well served by a raw production that keeps the cords incisive and corrosive while the drum is organic, all soaked in echoes and reverberation. DEATHBRINGER possesses a varied arsenal of brutality which serves very well its wicked side. DEATHBRINGER is bad, ferocious and maliciously tormented with a certain nihilistic vision. Even «Bone Weaver» which wants to be more friendly by throwing at us some vaguely dancing beats transported by a rhythmic which is not unlike Grunge, will become caustic with Black Metal which will take us to the end of the EP to these two words, «My Hate», which characterize so well the emotion that underlies this music.
I mentioned Tom G. Warrior, his aura will be omnipresent throughout my listening. Listen to the beginning of «Bourreau des martyrs» which brings Celtic Frost’s «Dethroned Emperor» to mind. I do not say here that DEATHBRINGER does only copy the style of but rather embraces this Crust / Punk attitude that colored the first albums of the legendary Swiss composer while the first sounds of what would lead to the appearance of Black and Death Metal. It creates a beautiful variety thanks to the use of different but complementary musical genres to craft these furious and gloomy songs where morbidity is a state of permanent grace enveloping these five sulphurous titles.
Definitely, for a debut release, DEATHBRINGER hits hard with «From Silence Was Born The Sound of Death» and should leave a lasting impression. You should definitely give it a try.
