Critique d’album: Catharsis (Belgique) – M-VIII B.C. (5 octobre 2024)

Catharsis – M-VIII B.C.

Le groupe belge Catharsis arrive en force avec leur deuxième EP en carrière intitulé « M-VIII B.C. ». Cet opus est sorti sous le label Gio Smet Records le 5 octobre 2024. Mélangeant le death metal moderne ainsi qu’un son plus « old school », Catharsis n’hésite pas à donner une bonne leçon de death metal à la bonne vieille façon européenne, rappelant les groupes comme Dismember, Hypocrisy et compagnie.

Formé en 2020, ce groupe est composé de plusieurs musiciens vétérans de la scène européenne ayant joué dans les groupes Death’s Bride, Solipsist, Brutal Exposure, Body of Christ et Signs of Cain. Ayant joué dans ces groupes dans les années 90, ce ne sont pas leur premier rodéo et ça paraît ! La qualité est au rendez-vous dans cet album qui s’étend sur plus de 25 minutes. Chacune des pièces proposées apportent un petit vent de fraîcheur.

Catharsis est un groupe composé de 4 musiciens autant talentueux les uns que les autres. Du côté vocal, nous avons Larz qui propose une voix guttural aux allures de John Tardy d’Obituary et Chuck Schuldiner de Death tout en gardant son petit côté à lui. Nous avons Werner à la guitare qui propose des riffs intéressants sur les pièces jouées accompagné par Gert à la bass et Luc aux drums.

Au point de vue musical, l’album commence avec un coup de boom. Peut-être un peu trop même. Sur la pièce d’ouverture « Paradise Lost », nous avons un cri de sirène comme si nous recevons une alerte Amber sur notre cellulaire… est-ce vraiment nécessaire ? Je n’ose même pas imaginer quelqu’un qui écoute une playlist et la pièce passe sur le mode aléatoire dans son véhicule et entendre le gros bruit d’Alerte Amber … bref, à part ce petit détail que je ne comprends totalement pas la pertinence, ce mini EP est bien agréable à écouter. Les 5 pièces figurant sur cet ouvrage sont excellentes et représentent bien l’essentiel du death metal. Des riffs accrocheurs, un vocal guttural et un drum bien sympathique.

En conclusion,  « M-VIII B.C. » ne va pas redéfinir le death metal en tant que tel mais est vraiment un ouvrage intéressant par Catharsis. Outre le bruit de sirène d’alerte Amber que je trouve totalement inutile et peut-être un peu trop surprenant, l’album est excellent du début à la fin. Le groupe a lancé l’album lors du GioFest et l’album est limité à seulement 100 copies.

Belgian band Catharsis is coming out strong with their second career EP entitled « M-VIII B.C. ». This opus was released under the Gio Smet Records label on October 5, 2024. Mixing modern death metal with a more « old school » sound, Catharsis does not hesitate to give a good lesson in death metal in the good old European way, reminiscent of bands like Dismember, Hypocrisy and company.

Formed in 2020, this band is made up of several veteran musicians from the European scene who played in the bands Death’s Bride, Solipsist, Brutal Exposure, Body of Christ and Signs of Cain. Having played in these bands in the 90s, this is not their first rodeo and it shows! The quality is there in this album which spans more than 25 minutes. Each of the pieces offered brings a breath of fresh air.

Catharsis is a band made up of 4 musicians who are as talented as each other. On the vocal side, we have Larz who offers a guttural voice that resembles John Tardy from Obituary and Chuck Schuldiner from Death while keeping his own little side. We have Werner on guitar who offers interesting riffs on the pieces played accompanied by Gert on bass and Luc on drums.

From a musical point of view, the album starts with a boom. Maybe a little too much even. On the opening track « Paradise Lost », we have a siren cry as if we received an Amber Alert on our cell phone… is it really necessary? I don’t even dare to imagine someone listening to a playlist and the song goes on random mode in their vehicle and hearing the loud noise of Amber Alert… in short, apart from this small detail that I totally don’t understand the relevance of, this mini EP is very pleasant to listen to. The 5 songs on this book are excellent and represent the essence of death metal. Catchy riffs, guttural vocals and a nice drum.

In conclusion, « M-VIII B.C. » is not going to redefine death metal as such but is really an interesting work by Catharsis. Besides the Amber Alert siren noise that I find totally useless and maybe a little too surprising, the album is excellent from start to finish. The band launched the album at GioFest and the album is limited to only 100 copies.
