Diverses raisons font en sorte que mon attention se porte vers un groupe plutôt qu’un autre et j’imagine que c’est la même chose pour vous. Dans le cas du groupe serbe CARNIVAL OF FLESH, c’est le mot «carnival» qui a attiré mon attention. Je me suis dit que quand tu mets «carnival» dans ton nom, c’est qu’il va comme y avoir un côté flyé. Je suis peut-être un peu trop porté sur les jugements hâtifs mais à la quantité d’albums que j’écoute, ce ne sont plus des préjugés mais des constats. Quand on vient à voir passer une centaine d’albums devant soi, on finit aussi par faire des raccourcis pour décider ce qui mérite notre intérêt prioritaire.
Ceci étant dit, une fois mon attention attirée par l’album, il a besoin d’assurer; les premiers moments de l’écoute sont cruciaux parce que j’en ai une pile à écouter au nom aussi invitant ou non, qui peut-être finalement seront the next big thing. J’ai donc appuyé sur «Play» en allant fouiner et j’ai vu sur son profil Facebook qu’il dit être influencé par Anorexia Nervosa, Carach Angren, Dimmu Borgir et Edge of Sanity. Un «plus» drette là en partant, mais quand tu mets la barre haute, je le redis, tu as besoin d’assurer. J’ai aussi appris que le groupe s’était formé en 2002 et avait été actif jusqu’en 2008 sans jamais rien enregistrer de ses compositions. Les membres fondateurs Dachaz (voix) et Dam (claviers) ont décidé de reformer le groupe en 2014 et nous arrivent avec un premier album qui, selon la note de presse, renferme des pièces composées entre 2002 et 2008, arrangées de façon moderne suite à la reformation du groupe.
À l’écoute de «The beginning», j’ai tout de suite apprécié leur approche au symphonic black metal qui m’a fait penser à Lux Occulta. Et rendu dans la deuxième partie de la chanson, il y a un côté gothic super cool et tout à coup, le temps d’un instant un vocal féminin. Définitivement CARNIVAL OF FLESH part en grand car cette pièce n’a absolument rien de linéaire et surtout mêle avec goût goth et black.
Avec grandeur suit «The Promise» avec son intro de claviers accompagnée d’un vocal chuchoté qui m’a fait penser à Cradle of Filth ou même Bal-Sagoth. Ce côté Cradle of Filth est de retour dans «The Horror» qui est une pièce qui aurait eu sa place sur «Midian». Les pièces qui suivent continueront d’évoluer dans l’ombre ou l’aura bienfaisante de CoF (c’est selon votre appréciation du rapprochement) qui sera omniprésente tout au long de l’album. D’ailleurs, je ne sais pas si mon côté autiste me joue des tours mais CARNIVAL OF FLESH fait aussi CoF.
Avec ce premier album, CARNIVAL OF FLESH montre clairement à quelle adresse il se loge. Je ne peux faire autrement que me rappeler la musique des gros noms du symphonic black metal au tournant du millénaire dont principalement Cradle of Filth; le groupe a définitivement composé des chansons qui sont puissantes, variées et accrocheuses (parfois par association avec des trucs connus). Maintenant j’ai hâte de voir où il mènera sa musique car comme mentionné ci-haut, «Stories Of A Fallen World» renferme des pièces composées entre 2002 et 2008, arrangées de façon moderne suite à la reformation du groupe. Ceci peut expliquer cela. Toutefois, si le voyage offert dans «The Battle», la plus longue pièce de l’album, est ce que réserve l’avenir, je suis intéressé à entendre au plus tôt la suite.

Several little things bring my focus to one band over another, and I imagine it is the same for you. In the case of the Serbian band CARNIVAL OF FLESH, the word «carnival» caught my attention. I thought that when you put «carnival» in your moniker, it suggest a weird side. I may be a little too focused on hasty judgments but with the amount of albums that I listen to, it is not prejudice but facts. I have a pile of albums waiting for me so I need shortcuts to decide what deserves my interest in priority.
That said, once my attention is drawn to the album, it got to strike me; the first moments of listening are crucial because I have a stack of bands to listen to with name as inviting or not, that may finally be the next big thing. So I pressed «Play» while looking around for infos and saw on its Facebook profile the group says it is influenced by Anorexia Nervosa, Carach Angren, Dimmu Borgir and Edge of Sanity. A «Plus» right there, but when you put the bar high, you need to deliver. While gathering infos about the band, I also learned that it was formed in 2002 and was active until 2008 without ever recording its compositions. The founding members Dachaz (voice) and Dam (keyboards) decided to reform the band in 2014 and work on a first album which according to the press release, contains songs composed between 2002 and 2008, arranged in a modern way after the reformation of the band.
Listening to «The Beginning», I immediately appreciated their approach to Symphonic Black Metal that reminded me a bit of Lux Occulta. The second part of the song brings a super cool gothic side and suddenly, it is time for a female vocal. Definitely «Stories Of A Fallen World» starts with a great song in large part because it has nothing linear and especially blends tastefully Gothic and Black Metal.
With greatness follows «The Promise» with its keyboard intro joined by a whispered voice that reminded me of Cradle of Filth or even Bal-Sagoth. This Cradle of Filth impression is back in «The Horror», a composition that would have had its place on «Midian». The following songs will continue to evolve in the shadows or benevolent aura (that is according to your appreciation of the similarities) of CoF that will be omnipresent throughout the album. Besides, I do not know if my autistic side plays tricks on me but CARNIVAL OF FLESH also makes CoF.
With this first album, CARNIVAL OF FLESH clearly shows its influences. I can not help but remember the music made by the big names of Symphonic Black Metal at the turn of the millennium and especially Cradle of Filth: the band has definitely composed songs that are powerful, varied and catchy (sometimes by association with known stuff). Now I am eager to hear where it will lead its music because as mentioned above, «Stories Of A Fallen World» includes songs composed between 2002 and 2008, arranged in a modern way after the reformation of the group. This may explain that. However, if the trip offered in «The Battle», the longest song on the album, is what the future holds for them, I am interested in their new stock, earlier than later.
