Bien que les girondins de BERSERKERS n’en soient plus à leurs prémices, je n’ai jamais eu l’occasion d’écouter ne serait-ce qu’une seule seconde de leurs précédentes sorties, dont déjà un album. Le deuxième, «Lock & Load», vient justement d’arriver afin, entre autres, de me permettre de combler ce vide.
Ce qui s’avère évident quasiment dès les premiers instants de la piste de lancement «Outlaw», c’est que ces hors-la-loi de la musique fleurent bon l’Est lointain à certains instants. Cependant, avant toute chose ils ont surtout décidé de faire claquer les fûts pour nous démontrer qu’ici la délicatesse n’était pas la priorité. Dans le même ordre d’idées, on apprécie grandement le passage en début de deuxième partie où les solis et le bon gros tambourinage savent aller de paire, afin d’en remettre une couche. Pas du tout dégoûté d’entrée, on y va à l’aveuglette concernant la suite, on fait déjà confiance au band. On dénote à nouveau qu’il adore couper son chanteur afin de placer des ponts souvent bien relevés, mais qu’il sait également les faire groover, cela se trouvant être parlant au cours de «Blind Taste».
On change totalement d’ambiance avec «Vampire Lady» et tant mieux, car il serait dommage de rester cloitré dans la même rengaine. Cela en sera même sûrement déroutant pour celles et ceux préférant le train-train quotidien et les disques uniformes. On évoquait des ponts qui parfois se mettent à groover, mais ici on a carrément droit à tout un morceau mixant groove et rock.
Au moins tout autant funky, «The Foolish Man» n’en oublie cependant pas lui aussi de varier les plaisir, en y intégrant du solo typiquement Heavy Metal des années 70 et 80. Clairement l’influence principale de BERSERKERS tout au long de «Lock & Load» mais loin d’être la seule, tant la formation sait jouer avec les codes du genre, en les torturant parfois et en les laissant s’exprimer de manière classique à d’autres moments. Nos hardos s’avèrent en sus capables de dégainer des hymnes à l’essence catchy, dont «Starlight City» est probablement le meilleur exemple. Cette spécificité crée d’ailleurs une certaine opposition bien sentie, la première moitié du titre de conclusion «Hangöverhead» s’avérant probablement le passage le plus sombre et lourd du CD.
«Lock & Load» s’avère une très bonne expérience pour les adeptes du Heavy Old School, mais pas uniquement. Le son si groovy de BERSERKERS fait sa grande force et offre ainsi un cocktail original.

Though the French group BERSERKERS is not a newcomer, I never had the opportunity to listen to even a single second of their previous releases, that including the first album. The second, «Lock & Load» has just arrived to rectify the situation.
What proves almost obvious from the first moments of the first track «Outlaw» is that these bad guys of music seems to be from a distant East at certain times. But above all, they have mostly decided to slam drums to demonstrate that here the delicacy was not the priority. In the same vein, I greatly appreciate the passage early in the second song where the solis and big fat drumming go hand in hand, to step further. Caught in by these tracks, I go blindly to the following, already trusting the band. I denote again they love to perform some techy bridges, but also know how to make them groove, this being hightlighted in «Blind Taste».
Totally changing the atmosphere with «Vampire Lady» and that feels good because it would be a shame to remain cloistered in the same old rythm. This could on the other hand confuse those preferring a more in the same mood album. I talked about those bridges which sometimes start to groove, well here it was an entire song mixing Rock and Groove.
At least equally funky, «The Foolish Man» however does not forget to vary the pleasure, incorporating the typical Heavy Metal solo from the 70 and 80’s. Clearly the main influence of BERSERKERS throughout «Lock & Load» but far from the only one, as the band can play with the codes of the genre, sometimes torturing them and expressing them conventionally at other times. These hardheads also prove capable of creating catchy anthems, like «Starlight City» probably the best example. This catchyness creates a clash that felt good with the first half of the concluding song «Hangöverhead», probably the most dark and heavy part of the CD.
«Lock & Load» proves to be a very good experience for fans of Old School Heavy Metal, but not only for them. The groovy sound of BERSERKERS is its great strength and offers an original cocktail.
