« A New Life is Born » EP
Self-Released/Independent
2014
With the advent of technological improvements and the explosion of social media, putting together a «band» or recording an album by yourself can be achieved by virtually anyone with enough know-how in which to get it done. But are all «one-man» projects worthy of critical praise? No. However, Poland’s, Grzegorz Makosky’s solo project, BENEATH THE SOLAR FIELDS, has released a debut EP entitled, « A New Life is Born » that is set to prove the naysayers wrong. Playing all instruments himself, Makosky defies the standard «programming ethos» long been known to «plague» one-man artists.
Opener, « Of Puridity and Hope » sets in motion the tone of the record in typical devastating Death Metal though with some interesting twists of slick riffing sprinkled throughout. The slower sections truly bring forth the real talent for crafting decent songs that, here, including a melodic solo against a backdrop of kick drums. Beneath the Solar Fields also slows the pace down considerably with juxtaposition between both extremes which reminds one of NILE’s penchant for the dramatic. With all the «shadow and light» aspects of the album, what is most striking about, « A New Life is Born« , is the musicianship with which the EP was crafted. Sure, there isn’t anything really new on offer here, idea-wise, but the simple fact that Makosky performs all instruments is testament to real dedication and ability.
For instance, closer, « Through the Void and the Flying Islands » runs the gamut of busy noise, progressive leanings and harmonious leads which translates to a epic-quality piece and one which certainly will propel him further towards international recognition (if he continues to develop in this way). BENEATH THE SOLAR FIELDS is a fair step onto the Death Metal stage, and for all intents and purposes, the sound/production is by far very decent along with Grzegorz Makosky’s talent in creating these five songs. However, do the songs distinguish themselves from the pack? Not necessarily, but one must remember, as a first time attempt, this has potential!
