Formé en 2011, le groupe états-unien BARBELITH a fait paraître en novembre 2014 son premier album complet, «Mirror Unveiled», qui s’ajoute aux deux EP que contenait déjà sa discographie. II a fait l’objet d’une reparution sous format vinyl en juin 2015. Pourquoi vous en parler après plus d’un an. Tout simplement parce que c’est un très bon album que vous devez découvrir.
L’album débute sur un genre de jam pendant une minute qui crée un crescendo apocalyptique puis la pièce s’élance dans un Black Metal intense entrecoupé de moments plus mélodiques dans un style Post-Rock lorsque les guitares ralentissent.
Par la suite, les pièces qui suivent offre un mélange entre Atmospheric et Raw Black Metal auxquels s’ajoute des influences Post-Rock. J’avais des appréhensions en voyant que deux des compositions dépassaient les treize minutes ce qui me prédisait de longs passages hypnotiques et languissants mais oubliez-ça, les pièces ont une superbe progression et les transitions sont tellement bien orchestrées qu’elles se font sans à-coups. De plus, ce qui m’a particulièrement charmé sur cet album est la progression de la batterie afin d’atteindre le climax nécessaire pour emmener les mélodies à un autre niveau.
Ceux qui me connaissent savent que je ne tripe pas sur le Modern Black Metal et encore moins sur le Post-Black. Ce qui me gosse avec ce genre de musique est le fait que le chanteur est toujours en train de s’époumonner à l’agonie. Aussi ironique cela puisse t’il être, c’est également le cas ici mais je peux l’accepter quand c’est accordé avec un son quelconque dans la musique et non juste du criage. Ici justement, les guitares ont une tonalité que la voix vient bien compléter.
BARBELITH réussit parfaitement son mix Post-Rock/Black Metal. J’ai trouvé une ressemblance avec Deafheaven quand c’est intense et rapide et avec Alcest quand c’est vaporeux et éthéré mais peu importe car le résultat est épique. C’est un beau croisement des deux. Remarquez que si vous avez aimé le grunge (!?), vous y trouverez également des mélodies qui vous accrocheront.

The one I have is the re-release in vinyl format in June 2015. Why talk about it after more than a year. Just because it is a very good album that you must discover.
The album begins on a kind of jam for a minute that creates an apocalyptic crescendo and the song then soars in intense Black Metal interspersed with more melodic moments in a Post-Rock style when the guitars slow down.
Thereafter, the songs which follow offer a mixture between Atmospheric and Raw Black Metal filled with Post-Rock influences. I was apprehensive seeing two compositions exceeding thirteen minutes which predicted me long passages languid and hypnotic but forget it, the songs have a beautiful progression and the transitions are so well orchestrated that they are not abrupt like it is often the case. Also, I was particularly delighted on this album by the progression of the drum to reach the climax necessary to take the songs to another level.
Those who know me know that I do not enjoy much Modern Black Metal and even less Post-Black. What bothers me with this kind of music is that the singer is always screaming in agony. Ironically, it is also the case here but I can accept it when it accompanies some instrument sound in the music and not just screaming for screaming. Here precisely, the guitars have a tone that the vocal completes very well.
BARBELITH perfectly managed its mix of Post-Rock/Black Metal. I found a resemblance with Deafheaven when it is intense and fast, and with Alcest when it is haunting and ethereal; the result is epic. It is a beautiful mix of the two styles. Note that if you like Grunge (!?), you will also find melodies that will get you into their music.
