Le groupe polonais ANTIGAMA formé il y a quinze ans et contenant toujours deux membres d’origine, a une discographie des plus remplies où foisonnent les splits de toutes sortes qui sont au nombre de treize en plus de ses deux démos d’introduction, deux EPs et sept albums. Les gars n’ont plus vraiment besoin d’introduction ayant fait les plus gros festivals dans le monde mais je voulais quand même vous parler de leur septième album sorti en mai parce qu’après toutes ces années, ANTIGAMA continue à composer de la musique pertinente qui offre une belle diversité.
En partant, les trois premières pièces sont straightforward drette dans notre face. Exactement ce que ça prend pour faire du bon grindcore. C’est rapide et violent mais il y a aussi plus que ça. Pas besoin de se concentrer beaucoup pour capter la passe jazzy de «Foul Play». Toutefois, une oreille attentive vous permettra aussi de capter beaucoup d’autres subtilités.
Avec «Used To», le côté progressif fait son apparition de façon beaucoup plus évidente et au lieu de me faire pilonner, j’ai l’impression de rebondir comme une pinball. Pour sa part, la pièce-titre est un bel exemple de faire autre chose avec une approche semblable car ici j’entends pas mal la rythmique de base de «Reward Or Punishment», reste que c’est ce qu’il tricote autour qui la distingue.
Si la première partie de l’album offre les usuelles pièces courtes de moins de 2:30 minutes qui renferment tout ce qui plait aux fans de Napalm Death jusqu’à The Locust, ANTIGAMA se lance dans quatre compositions plus ambitieuses pour la seconde partie dont la plus courte fait 3:46. Il se permet alors de se promener à l’extérieur du grindcore et ici, les fans auront à faire des choix.
«Sentenced To The Void» présente un autre visage de leur musique avec sa vibe punkrock qui lui donne un côté groovy et elle enchaîne avec la plus flyée de l’album «Out Beyond» avec son mur de claviers accompagné de roulements de tambours qui seront finalement rejoints par un pilonnage lent de la basse et un solo de claviers inconcevable reproduit ensuite par la guitare. Serions-nous témoin de la naissance du post-grind? Ou du atmospheric grindcore?!!
Même «Eraser» bien que plus brutale dans son approche pourra sembler trop death ou sludgy pour plusieurs et la monumentale «The Land Of Monotony» avec ses sept minutes m’a permis de songer à l’avenir du atmospheric post-grind ainsi qu’à la signification réelle du titre de la pièce (?!).
ANTIGAMA montre avec «The Insolent» qu’il mérite encore sa place parce qu’il n’hésite pas à innover. Il a compris que le grindcore est une musique anarcho-progressive qui doit démolir les conventions établies mais sans nécessairement être obligé de tomber dans le Mathcore. Allez écouter et préparez-vous à la pulsion ANTIGAMA.

The Polish veterans group ANTIGAMA formed fifteen years ago, has a discography filled with numerous splits of all kinds in addition to its two starting demos, two EPs and seven albums. The guys do NOT really need any introduction as they made the biggest festivals in the world but I still wanted to talk about their seventh album released in May because after all these years, ANTIGAMA continue to compose relevant music which offers a beautiful diversity.
Starting the album with a bang, the first three songs are straightforward and right in our face. Exactly what it takes to do good Grindcore. It is fast and violent but there are also more than that. No need to concentrate much to catch the jazzy part in «Foul Play». However, close attention will also allow you to capture many other subtleties.
With «Used To» the progressive side becomes much more obvious and instead of feeling pounded by the music, I feel more like a pinball bouncing.
The title track is a good example of doing something else with a similar approach because here I hear quite the basic rhythm of «Punishment Or Reward» but that is what is knitted around that distinguishes it.
If the first part of the album offers the usual short songs under 2:30 minutes containing everything that appeals to fans of Napalm Death to The Locust, ANTIGAMA embark, for the second part (starting with «Sentenced To The Void»), on four more ambitious compositions of which the shortest is 3:46 minutes. These songs wander out of Grindcore and fans will have to make choices.
«Sentenced To The Void» shows another side of their music with its punk rock vibe that makes it groovy and is followed by the weirdest song of the album, «Out Beyond», with its wall of keyboards accompanied by drumbeat that will eventually be joined by a slow bass pounding and an inconceivable keyboard solo followed by a guitar duplicate. Are we witnessing the birth of post-grind? Or atmospheric grindcore?!!
Even «Eraser», though more in a brutal approach, may seem too sludgy or death for many and the monumental «The Land Of Monotony», with its seven minutes, allowed me to think about the future of the atmospheric post-grind and the real signification of the title of the song (?!).
ANTIGAMA shows with «The Insolent» they still deserve a place among the best Grindcore bands because they do not hesitate to innovate. This band understood a long time ago that Grindcore is an anarcho-progressive music to demolish the established conventions without necessarily needing mathcore. Go listen and get prepared for the ANTIGAMA drive.
