Ceux qui me lisent savent que j’aime bien quand la musique me déstabilise, me sort de ma zone de confort. Une affirmation qui qualifie bien l’effet provoqué par le projet grec Abstruse gouverné par Substant qui est maintenant seul à la barre de ce projet débuté en 2002 sous forme de trio. Le genre musical apposé sur la page facebook dit psychedelic/ contemporary/ cinematic/ avantgarde/ experimental/ world/ metal qui, pour certains se lira comme une invitation au jeu et à la découverte alors que d’autres y verront au contraire un panneau «Entrer à vos risques» annonçant un champ de mines. C’est exactement la réaction qu’il semble avoir obtenue. Les appréciations sont divisées et très tranchées au sein des revues que j’ai consultées par curiosité. Ça se partage entre la proclamation au génie et le rejet à titre de divagation musicale. Mais a t-il justement pris trop de chances? Je vous donne mon opinion puis ensuite, j’ai demandé à mes collègues de me donner la leur alors ce sera une revue triple d’album.
Je dois avouer que dès le début de l’album, j’ai été très agréablement surpris par la complexité de la première pièce, «Outer Void»; pas à cause de trucs musicalement incompréhensibles mais par la nature imprévisible de la composition. Tout de suite aussi, j’ai apprécié le côté théâtral qui avait fait de Lux Occulta, un de mes groupes favoris des années 1990. On navigue dans un univers torturé où les atmosphères mêlent black metal (dont certains riffs en tremolo mais surtout l’ambiance déchirée du atmospheric black) et opéra mais pas de façon à faire du black symphonique mais plutôt afin de créer la trame sonore d’un film au scénario tordu qui plairait à David Lynch ou David Cronenberg.
Bien que je ne sois pas sûr que l’ensemble des expérimentations soient réussies, je dois avouer que plus d’un passage m’ont interpelé. Il faut aussi dire que les 2 albums totalisent près de 3 heures de musique et qu’une telle musique se digère à petites doses. Je devrai donc y revenir mais même si vous n’avez pas à vous taper cet exercice de réécoute, je vous assure que vous devez essayer au moins une fois si vous aimez la musique éclectique. Installez-vous avec des écouteurs pour profiter de l’enregistrement binaural et vraiment vous immerger dans cet univers musical qui tournoie dans tous les sens tant à l’intérieur des compositions qu’autour de votre tête pendant l’écoute. Le but est de donner des sensations via la musique qui, bien qu’elles soient à la base auditives, se veulent des expériences sensorielles globales c’est-à dire sollicitant l’ensemble de nos 5 sens. D’ailleurs, il est révélateur de constater que l’avant-dernière pièce du disque 1 est intitulée «A/S/M/R (A sun may rise)». Pourquoi, direz-vous. Parce que «ASMR» veut dire «Autonomous sensory meridian response» qui se traduit par «Réponse autonome des méridiens sensoriels» et se définit comme une sensation personnelle distincte, agréable et non sexuelle de picotements ou frissons au niveau du crâne, du cuir chevelu ou des zones périphériques du corps, en réponse à un stimulus visuel, auditif, olfactif ou cognitif. Étrangement bon!
Il n’est pas facile d’être ouvert à plusieurs styles musicaux différents. On est souvent plus confortable avec un ou deux styles de musique bien à nous. Mais, à force d’écouter toutes les catégories de styles de musique, j’ai appris à sortir de ma zone de confort. C’est une chose que j’ai développée au long de mon parcours avec Ondes Chocs. Dernièrement, Lex m’a présenté un groupe qui m’a complètement déstabilisé. Un réel mélange de bruit, de délire musicale, de trip d’acide, d’ambiance de rituel quelconque ou d’ambiance totalement psychédélique, qui est loin de nous laisser indifférent. J’ai beaucoup de difficulté à décrire ce groupe expérimental.
Après la deuxième écoute de l’album «Inner Space-Outer Void» de Abstruse, je suis allée m’informer à propos du groupe. C’est un groupe de la région de Athènes, en Grèce, qui est actif depuis 2002. Les thèmes principaux de leurs pièces sont la réalité et l’illusion. J’ai trouvé une définition de l’adjectif Abstruse : «qui est difficile à comprendre, obscur». Bon, jusqu’ici, je n’ai pas appris grand chose sur le groupe, mais ils portent très bien leur nom de groupe.
Je ne suis pas à ma première écoute de cet album et plus je l’écoute, plus j’aime cela. Les premières chansons sont pour moi moins intéressantes que les autres. Elles nous mettent en contexte qu’on est entrain d’écouter un album très différent des autres. Par contre, contrairement au reste de l’album, je les ai trouvés accessible. J’avais l’impression d’écouter un vieil album de Marilyn Manson légèrement décousu. On ressent beaucoup plus les influences de la musique progressive. Les percussions et les riffs de guitare aigus, sont très présents. Il y a beaucoup de variation musicale, qui nous introduisent beaucoup à ce qui nous attend.
Mon plaisir personnel à commencé à partir de la pièce «Enchanting The Snake». L’ambiance de cette pièce m’a fait penser à un vieux film d’horreur des années 80. Elle a une petite mélodie qui se répète et qui évolue dans un amalgame de sons tout aussi inquiétants les uns que les autres. Les deux pièces qui suivent m’ont fait penser à un jam d’un vieux groupe psychédélique des années 60-70. Je ne sais pas si c’est voulu mais parfois, j’avais l’impression que la musique était étouffée par un effet de bruit.
L’album se termine bientôt et j’ai une révélation. La pièce «Temple Ov the Android» est ma pièce préférée de l’album. On aurait dit qu’ils ont pris la musique d’un jeu vidéo et qu’ils en avaient fait une pièce de musée des horreurs. Tout est à contre temps et sonne faux. J’adore ça. Aussi, la pièce «A/S/M/R (A Sun May Rise)» est l’autre pièce sur laquelle j’ai accrochée. J’ai beaucoup pensé a l’expérimentation de Skinny Puppy avec les boulons et la sécheuse. Parfois la voix du chanteur me rappelle celle de David Bowie. Ce qui est cool de ces deux pièces, c’est que le son voyage de côté et de l’autre dans mes hauts parleurs. C’est vraiment cool quand on s’en rend compte.
À ma grande surprise, après que j’eus écouté l’album, Lex me dit:
Il y a un deuxième album à son délire musical psychédélique.
Le deuxième album, «Outer Space – Inner Void», est directement la suite de l’autre album. Au début, tu n’as pas l’impression que c’est le même groupe. La première chanson n’est pas aussi décousue que ce que j’avais entendu avant. Arrivée à la deuxième, je suis tombée dans le même tourbillon de musique étrange, voire même légèrement inquiétante.
Un moment donné après plusieurs écoutes, j’ai réalisé que les pièces sont très longues et il y a beaucoup de variations différentes dans une chanson. Je me suis un peu perdue là-dedans. J’avais l’impression que j’étais à la moitié de l’album et finalement, je n’étais encore qu’au début de celui-ci. Par contre, à la quatrième chanson, j’ai totalement accroché sur l’ambiance étrange, inquiétante et très chaotique. Autant tu entends des sons qui semble être un carillon, que tu es transporté dans un autre monde électro/ dark/ métal/ psychédélique, qui peut rendre agressif.
J’ai trouvé les pièces encore moins musicales que sur le premier album. Il nous arrive à tous de taper du pied ou de la main quand on écoute de la musique. Dans ce cas ci, c’est totalement impossible. Sa voix était criarde et beaucoup moins intéressant que «Inner Space – Outer Void». Je ne sais pas si son but est la provocation de l’agressivité, mais contrairement à sa première partie, «Outer Space – Inner Void» est venu me chercher plus d’émotion agressive. Chaque pièce commence avec un thème intéressant qui devient une sorte de chaos comme si on vivait un mauvais trip d’acide musical ou simplement un cauchemar dont on n’est pas capable de sortir. Une chance qu’il y a eu une accalmie vers la fin de l’album. Je crois que j’aurais eu de la difficulté à l’écouter plusieurs fois sans ça. Même si cet album est moins musical, l’utilisation du bruit et d’instrument de musique très variable donne un plus à l’appréciation de cet opus. (À la fin de l’album, j’ai cru entendre de la harpe).
C’est très risqué pour un groupe de faire ce genre de musique, car c’est compliqué à comprendre. Cela prend de l’écoute attentive, de l’écoute fréquente et surtout être en mesure d’apprécier la musique totalement désordonnée. Pour mon appréciation personnelle, j’ai vraiment adoré la première partie, mais la seconde, malgré qu’elle est très intéressante, m’a laissé sur des émotions de destruction et de haine.
L’album est disponible sur leur Bandcamp pour téléchargement À VOTRE PRIX si jamais vous voulez vous le procurer ou simplement l’écouter. Je crois que c’est une expérience qui en vaut la peine. C’est un bon moyen de découvrir un tout autre genre de musique, non traditionnel.

Those who read me regularly know that I like it when music destabilizes me and gets me out of my comfort zone. A statement that qualifies well the effect caused by the Greek project Abstruse governed by Substant who’s now alone at the helm of this project began in 2002 as a trio.
The musical genre affixed to the band according to their facebook page says psychedelic/ contemporary/ cinematic/ avantgarde/ experimental/ world/ metal, which for some will read as an invitation to play and discovery, while others will rather see a sign saying «Enter at your own risk» as if announcing a minefield. This is exactly the kind of reaction the band seems to have achieved. The assessments about the album are opposed and strong opinions are held in the album reviews I consulted by curiosity. It is divided between calling it «sheer genius» and rejection as a musical wandering. But did he just take too many chances? Here’s what I think and then I asked my colleague, Marie, to bring forth her tohoughts too so we’ll propose you a double album review.
I must confess that from the beginning of the album, I was very pleasantly surprised by the complexity of the first song, «Outer Void»; not because of musically incomprehensible stuff but by the unpredictable nature of the composition. Immediately I enjoyed the theatrics that made Lux Occulta, one of my favorite bands of the 1990s. Navigating in a tortured world where atmospheric black metal (some tremolo riffs but mostly torn atmospheres of atmospheric black) mix with operatic parts but not so as to make symphonic black metal but rather to create the soundtrack of a movie with a twisted scenario that would have pleased David Lynch or David Cronenberg.
Although I’m not sure that all the experiments are successful, I have to admit that more than one passage have attracted my full attention. I must also say that the two albums total nearly 3 hours of music, and this kind of music is better digested in small doses. I will have to come back to it for many more listenings before I really get into it but even if you do not have to do this exercise of listening to it again and again, I assure you that you must try it at least once if you like eclectic music.
Sit down with headphones on to enjoy the binaural recording and really immerse yourself into this musical world whirling in all directions, both within compositions and around your head while listening. The goal is to give feelings through music, and although starting as an auditory sensation, aims to be complete sensory experience that is to say, solliciting all of our five senses. Moreover, it is significant that the penultimate song of disc 1 is entitled «A/S/M/R (A Sun May Rise)». Why, you say. Because «ASMR» means «Autonomous sensory meridian response» and is defined as a distinct personal feeling, pleasant and not sexual of tingling chills in the skull, scalp or peripheral areas of the body, in response to a visual, auditory, olfactory or cognitive stimulus. Strangely, weirdly good!!
It is not easy to be open to many different musical styles. People are usually more comfortable with one or two musical styles, but by dint of listening to all types of musical styles, I learned to get out of my comfort zone. This is something I have developed throughout my collaboration with Ondes Chocs. So recently, Lex proposed me to listen to a band that completely destabilized me. A real mix of noise, musical delirium, acid trip, ritualistic and totally psychedelic atmospheres which is far from leaving me indifferent. Though I have great difficulties to describe this experimental band.
After my second listening of the disc «Inner Space-Outer Void», I went on to get information about Abstruse. I found out it is a band from the Athens area, Greece, which is active since 2002. The main topics of their songs are reality and illusion. I found a definition of the adjective «Abstruse» which means «difficult to understand, obscure». Well, it didn’t tell me much, but I can tell their band’s name fit very well with their music.
As I said, I did repeated listenings of this album and the more I listen to it, the more I like it. The first songs are less appealing and interesting to me than the followers. Though they put us in the mood and tell us we are about to hear a very different album, by comparaison to the rest of the album, I found them accessible. I had the impression of listening to an old album of Marilyn Manson but done in a slightly disjointed fashion. I felt a lot of progressive music influences. The drum and guitar riffs are very present. There are a lot of musical variation, which introduce us much about what lies ahead.
My personal fun started at the fourth song «Enchanting The Snake».The atmosphere of this song made me think of old horror movies from the 80s. It has a little melody that repeats and evolves into a sound amalgam of which all parts are equally disturbing. The next two songs that follow made me think of a psychedelic jam right out of the 1960-70’s. I do not know if it is wanted, but sometimes I felt that the music was drowned out by a sound effect.
The album ends soon and I have a revelation. The song «Temple Ov the Android» is my favorite track of the album. It sounded like they had taken the music of a video game and transformed it so to fit into the Hall of Fame of horror flicks. Everything is time table challenging and sounds out of tune. I love it. Also, the song «A/S/M/R (A Sun May Rise)» is another song that sunk into me. It brought me back to Skinny Puppy‘s experimentions with bolts and dryer. Sometimes the singer’s voice reminds me of David Bowie. The cool thing about these two songs is that the sound travels from side to side in my speakers. It’s really cool when you realize it.
To my surprise, after I listened to the album, Lex told me there is a second album to his musical psychedelic delirium. The second album, «Outer Space-Inner Void» is directly following in the path of the first one. Yet at first, I did not have the impression that this is the same band. The first song is not as disjointed as what I had heard before. With the second song, I felt the same whirlwind of strange and even slightly disturbing music.
Even after several listenings of this second album, the length of the songs and the many variations therein were still confusing me and making me feel a little lost in there. I felt like I had already listened to half of the album and finally, I was still only at the beginning of it. For cons, I got totally hooked into the strange, disturbing and very chaotic atmosphere of the fourth song. As much as you hear sounds that seems to be a chime, yet you are transported into an electro/ dark/ metal/ psychedelic world, which can get you in an aggressive mood.
I found even less musical parts in this one than in the first album. It happens to us all to tap foot or hand while listening to music. Here, it’s totally impossible. His voice was more a high pitch shriek and far less interesting than on «Inner Space-Outer Void». I do not know if Abstruse‘s goal is to install an aggressive atmosphere but, unlike the first album, «Outer Space-Inner Void» brought me mainly aggressive emotions.
Each song begins with an interesting theme that becomes a kind of chaos like living a bad musical acid trip or simply a nightmare from which I was not able to get out. Luckily there was a lull towards the end of the album. I think I would have struggled to listen to it several times without these calmer parts. Although this album is less musical, the use of different sounds/noises and varied music instruments give a plus to the appreciation of this album. (At the end of the album, I thought I heard a harp).
It is very risky for a band to do this kind of music because it is complicated to understand. It takes careful listening, frequent listening and above all to be able to appreciate totally disordered music. Personally, I really loved the first album, but the second, although very interesting, left me with emotions of destruction and hatred.
The album is available on their Bandcamp as a «NAME YOUR PRICE» download if you ever want to get it or just listen to it. I think this is an experience that is worthwhile. This is a good way to experience a different kind of music, totally out of the box.
