Après une absence totale de la scène Black Metal causée par une séparation de 15 ans (2000-2015) et une absence d’album complet ayant duré 20 ans, la formation polonaise SACRILEGIUM nous revenait enfin en mars avec un album pleine longueur intitulé «Anima Lucifera». Ayant été ébloui l’an passé par la réédition remastérisée de leur chef-d’œuvre de Black Metal païen, «Wicher» (lire ma revue en cliquant ce lien), paru originalement en 1996, j’étais donc très curieux de découvrir ce que SACRILEGIUM nous offrirait en 2016. Est-ce que la troupe parviendrait à surpasser ou à rencontrer les attentes après une si longue absence? Telle était ma question de départ en entamant mes écoutes de ladite galette de plastique.
Tout d’abord, la première chose qui me sauta aux oreilles et aux yeux dès les premières écoutes de «Anima Lucifera» fut l’abandon du côté «païen» qui caractérisait autant le son que l’imagerie du groupe à ses débuts. En effet, sur ce nouvel opus, SACRILEGIUM délaisse les mélodies importées du folklore slave accompagné de «blastbeats» mur à mur pour un Black Metal teinté de Death/Thrash mélodique où on sent une forte influence de la célèbre formation suédoise Dissection. De plus, l’imagerie du groupe se veut maintenant plus luciférienne que païenne. Seule «Preludium», l’introduction, un interlude et «Epilog, la conclusion, présentent des sons nocturnes et forestiers qui rappellent le passé «païen» du groupe. Pour terminer cet aspect, je soulignerais aussi que le groupe a abandonné sa langue natale pour utiliser l’anglais et le latin, ce qui marque aussi une coupure avec le côté «folklore païen» de leur musique dans les années 1990.
Cela dit, la transformation sonore est bien opérée avec des motifs de guitare superbes, mélodiques et entraînant surplombant une batterie variée qui alterne entre passages groovys et «blastbeats» furieux. Les claviers prennent aussi du recul par rapport au rôle constant qu’ils avaient sur «Wicher». Si à cette époque les nappes de claviers en fond sonore omniprésentes caractérisaient la musique des Polonais, maintenant ils ont un rôle plus circonscrit à introduire certaines pièces ou à en rehausser quelques passages sporadiques.
L’approche vocale non orthodoxe adoptée par Nantur Aldaron, contribue aussi à distinguer le nouveau SACRILEGIUM du lot. Effectivement, celui-ci place son chant de façon plus viscérale que purement musicale en suivant des patrons non conventionnels par rapport à ce qui se fait habituellement dans ce type de Death/Black mélodique. De plus, comparativement au passé, sa voix râpeuse prend une tonalité sensiblement plus grave que ce qu’on pouvait entendre sur «Wicher».
Enfin, au chapitre de la production, la troupe polonaise nous présente un son très moderne et léché, délaissant le caractère crasseux du Black Metal des années 1990. Bien que cela leur permette de mieux mettre en valeur des compositions plus subtiles et nuancées que leurs œuvres précédentes, l’excès de propreté est peut-être à craindre ici, car j’ai constaté un certain manque de spontanéité et d’atmosphère au cours de mes nombreuses écoutes. Cependant, il va de soi que ce type de production est plus adapté à montrer les fioritures plus élaborées de leurs nouvelles pièces.
En somme, avec «Anima Lucifera», SACRILEGIUM marque un changement de style qui rend toute comparaison avec leurs efforts précédents difficile, délaissant le Black païen typiquement slave pour un Death/Black mélodique rappelant l’école suédoise des Dissection, Dawn, Sacramentum et compagnie. Si le groupe maintient certains aspects propres à lui, notamment en ce qui a trait au vocal, le changement sera sans doute surprenant pour ceux qui s’attendaient à une poursuite de ce qu’ils faisaient il y a quinze à vingt ans et il demeure difficile de se prononcer à savoir si le groupe n’a pas perdu un pan de sa personnalité propre à travers une longue pause et un changement stylistique. Toutefois, des motifs de guitare très intéressants et une production moderne de qualité en appelleront certainement à de nouveaux fanatiques pour SACRILEGIUM, même si certains de leurs aficionados de la première heure descendront peut-être en gare.

After a total absence of the Black Metal scene caused by a separation of 15 years (2000-2015) and a complete absence of album lasting 20 years, the Polish group SACRILEGIUM finally returned in March with a full length album entitled «Anima Lucifera». Having been dazzled last year by the remastered reissue of their pagan Black Metal masterpiece, «Wicher» (click here to read my review), originally released in 1996, I was very curious to discover what SACRILEGIUM would offer us in 2016. Would the troupe manage to surpass or meet expectations after such a long absence? That was my question when starting my listening of the said album.
First of all, the first thing that caught my ears and eyes from the first listenings of «Anima Lucifera» was the abandonment of the pagan side that characterized both the sound and the imagery of the group at its beginnings. Indeed, on this new opus, SACRILEGIUM abandons the melodies imported from the Slavic folklore accompanied by blastbeats for a Black Metal tinged with Melodic Death/Thrash where one feels a strong influence of the famous Swedish formation Dissection. Moreover, the imagery of the group is now more luciferian than pagan. Only the introduction «Preludium», an interlude and the conclusion, «Epilog», present nocturnal and forest sounds that recall the pagan past of the group. To conclude on this, I would also point out that the band abandoned their native language to use English and Latin, which also marks a break with the pagan folklore side of their music in the 1990s.
That said, the sound transformation is well operated with superb melodic and dramatic guitar patterns, overhanging varied drum beats that alternate between groovy passages and furious blastbeats. The keyboards also stand back from the constant role they had on «Wicher». If at that time, the omnipresence of keyboards in the background characteristized the music, now they have a more circumscribed role to introduce certain songs or to enhance some sporadic passages.
The non-orthodox vocal approach adopted by Nantur Aldaron also helps to distinguish the new SACRILEGIUM from the lot. Indeed, he delivers in a more visceral than purely musical fashion, following unconventional patterns compared to what is usually done in this type of Melodic Death/Black Metal. Moreover, compared to the past, his raspy voice takes on a significantly deeper tone than what could be heard on «Wicher».
Finally, in terms of production, the Polish troupe presents a very modern and licked sound, neglecting the filthy character of the Black Metal of the 1990s. Although this allows them to better showcase more subtle and nuanced compositions than their previous works, the excess of cleanliness is perhaps to be feared here, for I have observed a certain lack of spontaneity and feelings during my numerous listening sessions. However, it goes without saying that this type of production is more suitable to show the more elaborate new songs.
In short, with «Anima Lucifera», SACRILEGIUM marks a change in style that makes any comparison with their previous efforts difficult, abandoning the typically Slavic Pagan Black Metal for a Melodic Death/Black Metal reminding the Swedish school of Dissection, Dawn, Sacramentum and als. While the group maintains certain of its specific aspects, particularly with respect to the vocal, the whole change is likely to be surprising for those who expected the pursuit of what they did fifteen to twenty years ago, Difficult to decide whether the group lost a part of its own personality through a long break and a stylistic change. However, very interesting guitar patterns and a modern production of quality will certainly appeal to new fanatics for SACRILEGIUM, even if some of their aficionados of the first hour may jump off the wagon.
