NECRONOMICON, composé de trois membres: Rob The Witch à la guitare et à la voix, Mars à la basse et Rick à la batterie (ne pas se confondre avec le groupe de Thrash Metal allemand du même nom), a été formé en 1988 ce qui en fait un des plus vieux groupes québécois encore actifs mais toutefois il ne compte seulement à son actif que cinq albums. Il n’est pas rare que certains groupes ne produisent pas autant, mais au moins, la qualité est là. Originaire du Saguenay et installé depuis des années à Montréal, il a fallu attendre jusqu’en 1999 pour la sortie du premier intitulé «Pharaoh Of Gods» via le label Hypnotic Records, puis reparu trois ans plus tard sur le label Unique Leader. Après la sortie du solide album «Rise Of The Elder Ones» en 2013, j’étais curieux de savoir comment le groupe avait évolué pour la prochaine sortie intitulée «Advent Of The Human God». Voyons voir ce que j’en pense.
En premier lieu, les intros donnent toujours un ton et une ambiance appropriée pour la chanson suivante. Mais personnellement, je trouve qu’il y a trop d’intro qui ne font que donner un nom de chanson supplémentaire à mettre sur l’album. Autrement dit, je trouve que ça devient un peu du remplissage. Par contre, il ne faudrait pas oublier le cover de l’intro culte «Innocence And Wrath» de Celtic Frost qui vient de l’album culte «To Mega Therion». Si on fait abstraction de ces interludes, les compositions du groupe restent très dévastatrices et sans merci. Le groupe offre un matériel encore plus travaillé, plus original et moins répétitif que sur «Rise Of The Elder Ones» (encore moins que sur «The Return Of The Witch»). D’ailleurs, on peut entendre des partitions moyen-orientales qui sont à la fois classiques, mais aussi à la fois accrocheuses sur la chanson «Crown Of Thorns».
Le seul truc que j’ai à redire, c’est de la façon que certaines chansons commencent. Personnellement, c’est la partie que je trouve la plus répétitive du groupe puisque la plupart de leurs compositions ont tendance à commencer de façon similaire, mais pas nécessairement avec les mêmes riffs. Et par rapport à l’album précédent, j’ai trouvé que les orchestrations sont encore plus épiques et accrocheuses. Je les ai remarquées davantage et elles sont venues capter mon attention. À vrai dire, ma première réaction en entendant les orchestrations sur plusieurs chansons a été: «Wow! C’est rendu sur la coche! J’adore ça!» Si je dois définir les trois chansons qui m’ont marqué, ce fut «Alchemy Of The Avatar» (ma chanson préférée qui finit l’album de façon épique), «Crown Of Thorns» et «The Fjord».
En ce qui concerne la voix, on ne pourrait pas dire grand-chose mis à part que Rob The Witch garde la même cadence sur une voix qui nous dicte l’apocalypse tout au long de l’album. Dans le genre que NECRONOMICON joue, le chanteur garde encore une fois très bien son style de chant.
En ce qui a trait à la production, de façon générale, elle a monté à un autre niveau même si ça arrive qu’elle a quelques défauts au courant de l’album. À quelques reprises, je trouve que les orchestrations sont mises en arrière-plan pour laisser davantage de place aux instruments de musique, quoique sur la deuxième chanson, la pièce titre de l’album «Advent Of The Human God», c’est plutôt le contraire qui s’est produit. Pour le reste, je trouve que la job sur la production et le mixage a été un travail très bien fait et a su donner un résultat dévastateur et épique.
En conclusion, «Advent Of The Human God» est un album qui a surpassé son prédécesseur «Rise Of The Elder Ones» sur plusieurs points: le groupe a composé des pièces plus originales, variées et un peu moins répétitives; les orchestrations sont plus que jamais épiques et viennent chercher la curiosité des gens qui l’écoutent, et pour finir, la production finale de ce produit a fait un très bon travail malgré quelques défauts par ici et par là. À peine trois mois sont passés que les sorties québécoises sont très solides et qu’il ne serait pas surprenant que j’aille des grosses décisions à prendre pour déterminer mon top 10 de cette année. Et j’espère de tout cœur, pour les neuf prochains mois, que les sorties québécoises vont être sur cette lignée. NECRONOMICON, composed of three members: Rob The Witch on guitar and vocals, Mars on bass and Rick behind the drums (not to be confused with the German Thrash Metal band of the same name), was formed in 1988 which makes them one of the oldest Quebec group still active but it only has five albums to its credit. It is not uncommon that certain groups do not produce much, but at least the quality is there. Saguenay native but installed for years in Montreal, it took until 1999 for the release of the first album entitled «Pharaoh Of Gods» via Hypnotic Records, then reissued three years later on the label Unique Leader. After the release of the solid album «Rise Of The Elder Ones» in 2013, I was curious about how the group had evolved for the upcoming release entitled «Advent Of The Human God». Let’s see what I think.
First, intros always give a tone and an appropriate atmosphere for the next song. But personally, I think that there are too many intros that just seem to be there to give an extra song name to put on the album. In other words, I think they act as album fillers. By cons, we should not forget the cover of the Celtic Frost’s cult intro «Innocence And Wrath» that comes from the cult album «To Mega Therion».
If we disregard these interludes, the compositions of the group remain very devastating and without mercy. The group offers even better crafted compositions, more original and less repetitive than on «Rise Of The Elder Ones» ( let alone «The Return Of The Witch»). Besides, they used Middle Eastern partitions that are classics, but also very catchy on «Crown Of Thorns».
The only thing I have to complain about is the way that some songs start. Personally, this is the part that I find the most repetitive since most of their compositions tend to start in a similar way, even though not necessarily with the same riffs. On counterpart, compared to the previous album, I found that the orchestrations are even more epic and catchy. I have noticed them more and they really captured my attention. Actually, my first reaction on hearing the orchestrations on several songs was, « Wow! It is great! I love it! If I have to define the three songs that stood out the most for me they are «Alchemy Of The Avatar» (my favorite song that ends the epic album so ), «Crown Of Thorns» and «The Fjord».
Regarding the vocal, I could not say much except that Rob The Witch keeps the same pace with a voice that dictates the apocalypse throughout the album. In the genre that plays NECRONOMICON, this vocal style is appropriate.
With respect to production, in general, it rises to another level even if it happens it has a few flaws for my taste. Mostly the orchestrations are put in the background, leaving more room for the instruments, although on the second song, the album title track «Advent Of The Human God» it is rather the opposite. For the rest, I think the job on the production and mixing was very well done and has given a devastating and epic result.
In conclusion, «Advent Of The Human God» is an album that surpassed its predecessor «Rise Of The Elder Ones» on several points: the group has composed songs more original, varied and a bit less repetitive; the orchestrations are more than epic and are definitely ear-catchers and finally the production has done a very good job despite some flaws here and there.
