Cette année, peu de sorties dans l’univers stoner metal/rock ont suscité mon intérêt à un point tel que je me suis demandé si cette scène ne s’était pas affaiblie par rapport à l’année dernière. Certains groupes ont encore la cote, mais rien d’intéressant à dire sur eux pour autant. Par contre, si je dois vous parler d’un groupe en particulier, c’est bien le groupe suédois DEVILLE. DEVILLE est un groupe de stoner rock avec un côté metal de Malmö, la troisième ville la plus habitée en Suède, composé de quatre membres: un chanteur/guitariste, un guitariste, un bassiste et un batteur. C’est un groupe qui existe depuis 2003 et qui a à son actif quatre albums. Le dernier, «Make It Belong To Us», celui qui nous intéresse dans cette critique, sort aujourd’hui le 13 novembre sous le label Fuzzorama Records. Voyons de quoi il a l’air…
Les compositions du groupe sont quand même variées, quoiqu’il y ait des passes qui se répètent dans plusieurs chansons. De façon surprenante, ce ne sont pas toutes les chansons qui ont réussi à me faire bouger la tête. Certaines chansons m’ont marqué tandis que d’autres n’ont pas eu cet effet. Ce qui m’a surpris, c’est à quel point que les chansons passent très vite. Certes, il y a une chanson en particulier qui ne dure pas longtemps, mais on dirait que ça passe tellement vite que je ne suis pas capable de la saisir dans son ensemble en une seule écoute. J’ai l’impression qu’il va toujours en avoir plus même si elles ne finissent pas brusquement, mais je suis déçu à chaque fois de ne pas entendre davantage à chaque chanson.
Un point m’accroche au niveau de l’identité du groupe. Tout au long de mes écoutes, je me suis posé la question suivante: est-ce que c’est du stoner metal ou du stoner rock? Bref, j’ai conclu que c’était davantage du stoner rock avec des aspects plus metal.
Ensuite, j’ai trouvé le vocal très rock, respectant le genre, mais j’aurais voulu qu’il y ait un peu d’agressivité pour que ce soit plus remarquable. Puis, la production de l’album est très bonne. En général, on entend très bien tout le monde et de façon assez égale. À mon avis, il manque juste un peu de gras dans le son du groupe pour que ce soit parfait.
En conclusion, ce sont plus de 30 minutes de stoner qui passent très rapidement. On ne saurait les blâmer d’offrir quelque chose de court avec peu de chansons parce qu’il y en a quand même dix sur l’album. Bien qu’il y ait quelques défauts, «Make It Belong To Us» reste un bon album dans son ensemble et saura plaire aux amateurs de stoner rock. This year, few releases in the world of stoner metal/rock aroused my interest to a point that I wondered if this scene had not weakened compared to last year. Some bands still are popular, but nothing interesting to say about them either. By cons, if I have to tell you about a particular group, it is the Swedish DEVILLE. DEVILLE, a group of stoner rock with a metal angle from Malmö, the third most populated city in Sweden, consists of four members: a singer/guitarist, a guitarist, a bassist and a drummer. It exists since 2003 and has four albums to its credit. The latest, «Make It Belong To Us», which is the subject of this review, was released today November 13 through Fuzzorama Records. Let’s see what it sounds like.
The compositions of the group are varied, although there are patterns that are repeated in several songs. Surprisingly, these are not all the songs that have managed to make me shake my head . Some songs impressed me while others did not have this effect. What surprised me was how the songs go by very quickly. Certainly, there is a particular song that does not last long, but it looks like it goes by so fast that I am not able to grasp it as a whole in one listen. I feel there is more to come even if they do not end abruptly, but still I am disappointed every time not to hear more in each song.
I had a little problem to pinpoint the group identity. Throughout my listens, I asked myself: «Is it stoner metal or stoner rock?» In short, I concluded that it was more stoner rock with some metal aspects.
The vocal too is very rock, respecting the genre, but I wish there was a bit of aggressiveness to make it more remarkable. Then the production of the album is very good. Generally, we hear very well and everyone fairly evenly . I think it lacks a bit of dirt in the band’s sound to make it perfect.
In conclusion, this is more than 30 minutes of stoner which passes very quickly. One can not blame them to offer something short with few songs because there was still ten on the album. Although there are some flaws, «Make It Belong To Us» remains a good album as a whole and will appeal to fans of stoner rock.
