Enfin, après avoir attendu depuis si longtemps! Suite à l’annonce de la sortie d’un nouvel album du groupe Arcturus, j’avais très hâte de l’écouter. C’est l’album que j’attendais le plus pour l’année 2015. Évidemment, mes attentes sont très hautes et j’espère ne pas être déçu, d’autant plus que j’ai acheté l’un des deux boîtiers qui m’a coûté une bonne partie d’une de mes payes. Avant de parler de ce que je pense du nouvel album, je vais vous raconter mon anecdote sur comment j’ai découvert le groupe et comment j’ai finalement aimé ce groupe.
En 2007, j’avais acheté au défunt Profusion Metalstore de Montréal – alors qu’il était localisé sur la rue Ontario, tout près de la rue Papineau – le deuxième album du groupe qui s’intitule «La Masquerade Infernale» sorti en 1997 via le label Music For Nations. En fouillant pour quelque chose de nouveau, j’étais tombé sur la pochette de cet album. Je me souviens que Rémi (le propriétaire d’alors) m’avait dit que c’était un classique du groupe et que c’était vraiment bon. Je m’étais donc décidé à l’acheter. Lorsque j’étais arrivé chez moi, j’avais mis le CD dans mon ordinateur et l’avais écouté. Ma première réaction avait été très négative. À l’époque, je trouvais ça trop bizarre, pas assez rapide et pas assez «méchant». Je me concentrais davantage sur des groupes comme Slayer, Behemoth (que je venais de découvrir avec leur dernier album de l’époque «The Apotasy»), Judas Priest, Exodus, Mayhem, etc. Bref, ça faisait un an que je m’étais mis à écouter plus de métal extrême.
Trois ans plus tard, alors que je faisais le ménage de ma chambre et que je cherchais quelque chose à écouter, je suis retombé par hasard sur cet album. Je me suis dit que j’allais l’écouter à nouveau et cette fois-ci, plus attentivement. Et plus je l’écoutais, plus je l’aimais. Après la deuxième écoute, je l’avais joué à nouveau et c’est beaucoup à ce moment-là que je m’étais rendu compte à quel point il y avait du génie derrière tout ça. C’est donc grâce à Arcturus que j’ai commencé à aimer d’autres groupes plus avant-gardistes comme Dodheimsgard, qui a sorti un album solide cette année en passant.
Voilà donc mon anecdote personnelle. Maintenant, je voudrais présenter le groupe davantage. Arcturus est un groupe de black métal avant-gardiste norvégien. Le groupe a fait 4 albums avant de sortir son plus récent le 12 mai dernier via le label Prophecy Productions. Le groupe est actuellement composé de cinq membres, soit un chanteur, deux guitaristes, un bassiste et un joueur de batterie. Pour les gens qui ne le savent pas, c’est Hellhammer de Mayhem qui s’occupe de la batterie et c’est ICS Vortex, bassiste du groupe Dimmu Borgir entre 1999 et 2009, qui fait le chant. Le tout dernier album s’intitule «Arcturian» et possède 10 nouvelles chansons. Voici à quoi ressemble leur dernier album…
Musicalement, c’est ce que je m’attendais de leur part: du GÉNIE. Autant de moments forts que de moments plus calmes, mettant en scène des ambiances qui sortent parfois de l’ordinaire et qui iront chercher de temps en temps un côté mystérieux et bizarre. Les compositions sont très travaillées et originales. Les ambiances correspondent parfaitement à la musique jouée de chaque chanson et elles nous embarquent directement dans l’univers déjanté d’Arcturus. En fait, si vous avez aimé le premier extrait «The Acturian Sign», il n’y a pas de raison pour ne pas aimer l’album au complet. La chanson «Game Over» aurait facilement pu se retrouver sur l’album «La Masquerade Infernale» ou bien sur l’album «The Sham Mirrors» à cause des ambiances. Pour les amateurs de violon, vous pouvez en entendre dans la pièce «The Journey», qui est très calme avec une ambiance relaxante et les partitions de violon vont très bien avec la musique de cette chanson. Toutes les pièces de cet album sont géniales, mais je dirais que la moitié d’entre elles m’ont plus particulièrement marqué: «The Acturian Sign», «Crashland», «Angst», «Game Over» et «Archer». La seule chose qui m’a déçu, c’est que le côté mystérieux et bizarre manque un peu trop à l’appel. J’en aurais voulu davantage parce que c’est ça qui a fait la renommée du groupe dans le passé. Malgré tout, les quarante-huit minutes de musique m’ont paru tellement courtes que je l’ai réécouté cinq ou six fois avant d’être entièrement satisfait.
Pour la voix, j’ai toujours considéré ICS Vortex comme étant un très bon chanteur et qu’il avait contribué aux succès de Dimmu Borgir, notamment sur des pièces cultes comme «Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse» ou bien «The Serpentine Offering». Son chant est absolument magnifique et concorde parfaitement à tout ce qui se passe sur cet album. Et par rapport à l’album précédent, «Sideshow Symphonies», j’ai trouvé qu’il maîtrisait davantage sa voix en variant très bien les sonorités qu’il est capable de faire autant dans le «clean» que dans le «growl».
Au niveau de la production, c’est impeccable. On entend tout parfaitement. Personne ne sonne plus fort que l’autre et on entend tous les instruments joués sur chaque chanson. Les ambiances sonnent extrêmement bien et n’embarquent pas trop sur les autres instruments. J’imagine le temps que ça l’a dû prendre pour faire le mixage, le «mastering», etc. pour sortir un produit d’une excellente qualité.
En conclusion, Arcturus a effectué un excellent retour avec son nouvel opus intitulé «Arcturian» après toute une décennie. Mes attentes, étant très hautes au départ, ont été extrêmement satisfaites et ça sera sans aucun doute un de mes albums préférés cette année. Mon achat du gros boitier, qui correspond à l’article de musique le plus dispendieux que j’ai acheté de ma vie, a valu chaque cenne que j’ai dépensée pour son achat. Tout ce que j’espère, c’est ne pas attendre encore dix ans avant la sortie d’un autre album d’Arcturus.

Finally, after waiting for so long! Following the announcement that Arcturus would release a new album, I could not wait to listen it. This is the album I expected the most for the year 2015. Obviously, my expectations were very high and I hoped not to be disappointed, especially since I bought one of the two boxsets and it cost me much of my paycheck.
Before I talk about the new album, let me tell you my story about how I discovered the band and how I finally liked them.
In 2007, at the now unfortunatly closed Montreal Profusion Metalstore, when it was located on Ontario Street, close to Papineau Street, I had bought the second album entitled «La Masquerade Infernale» released in 1997 via the label Music For Nations. Looking for something new, I had stumbled over the cover of this album. I remember that Rémi (then the owner) had told me that it was a classic of the group and was really good. So I had decided to buy it.
When I arrived home, I put the CD in my computer and had a listen. My first reaction was very negative. At the time, I thought it was too weird, not fast and brutal enough. At the time, I was more focused on bands like Slayer, Behemoth (that I had just discovered with their latest album at the time «The Apotasy»), Judas Priest, Exodus, Mayhem, etc. In short, it had been a year since I had started listening to more extreme metal .
Three years later, while cleaning my room and looking for something to listen to, I uncovered the album. I thought then that maybe it was the right time to give it a second spin but this time listening to it more carefully. And the more I listened to it, the more I liked it. After this second listening, I went for a third shot and it’s then I had realized how much there was Brillant idea behind all this. So thanks to Arcturus, I started to enjoy other more avant-gard bands such Dodheimsgard, which released a solid album this year (just saying).
So this is my personal story with Arcturus. Now, it’s time to present the band. Arcturus is an avant-gard black metal band from Norway. The band has 4 albums and just released it’s most recent work on May 12th via the label Prophecy Productions. The band is currently composed of five members: one singer, two guitarists, a bassist and a drum player. For those who do not know it’s Hellhammer from Mayhem who handles the drum and it’s ICS Vortex, Dimmu Borgir bassist from 1999 to 2009, which is singing. The latest album is called «Arcturian» and has 10 new songs. Now let’s talk about this album.
Musically, this is what I expected from them: Pure Genius. It offers as many intense moments as quieter ones, staging atmospheres that sometimes ventures out of the ordinary and will reach from time to time a mysterious and weird side. The compositions are well worked and originals. The moods perfectly match the music played and every song take us directly into the crazy world of Arcturus. In fact, if you liked the first single, «The Acturian Sign», there is no reason not to like the entire album.
The song «Game Over» could have easily ended up on the album «La Masquerade Infernale» or on «The Sham Mirrors» because of its atmosphere. For violin lovers, «The Journey» is your song, a very quiet song with a relaxing atmosphere and the violin parts fit very well with the music of this song. In fact, all songs of this album are great, but I would say half of them have particularly marked me: «The Acturian Sign», «Crashland», «Angst», «Game Over» and «Archer». The only thing that disappointed me was that the mysterious and bizarre side lacks a bit too much to the call. I wanted to have more because that’s what made the reputation of the group in the past. Nevertheless, the forty-eight minutes of music seemed to me so short that I listened to it five or six times before being completely satisfied.
On the vocal side, I have always considered ICS Vortex as a very good singer and that he had contributed to the success of Dimmu Borgir, including on cult songs like «Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse» and «The Serpentine Offering». His singing is absolutely beautiful and perfectly consistent with everything that happens on this album. And compared to the previous album, «Sideshow Symphonies» I thought he controlled better his voice by varying the offering in his clean as well as in his growl.
At the production level, it is impeccable. We hear everything perfectly. Nobody sounds louder than the other and we hear all the instruments played on each song. The arrangments fit well and did not overshadow the instruments either. I imagine the time it must have needed to do the mixing, mastering, etc. to release a product of such excellent quality.
In conclusion, Arcturus has made an excellent comeback with its new album entitled «Arcturian», a first in a decade. My expectations were very high at the start but were extremely satisfied and it will undoubtedly be one of my favorite albums this year. Buying the large boxset, which is the most expensive musical item I ever bought in my life, was worth every penny I spent. All I hope for now is not to wait another ten years before the release of another Arcturus‘ album.
